Neither of those are neglect...

I can't think of 1 bridge that has collapsed 'due to neglect' in the past 20 years... in the US At least.
even the I-35W, which was the famous collapse for being considered a 'neglected bridge' was in the process of being repaired and was loaded with construction supplies and equipment when it collapsed.

And to see American "liberals" shedding snake tears while nodding in total agreement with them

Well, and being lectured by a billionaire that has obviously not spread his personal money around to his people. But then, didn't the U.S. Gov do so well with the money it redistributes to housing?

NTSB:
The gusset plates at the U10 nodes, where the collapse initiated, had inadequate
capacity for the expected loads on the structure, even in the original as-designed
condition.

The bridge failed not due to neglect, but due to poor design.

In fact, the weeks leading up to the collapse the bridge was undergoing refurbishing and repairs to address the fact that it was seriously degraded and federally defined as 'structurally deficient'. even in your link the state bridge engineer 'Dan Dorgan' provides the statement: "We thought we had done all we could..." because the week before they repaired and replaced several key joints and support columns which was done specifically to prevent a collapse.

It was not neglect which caused the bridge to fail.

What the fuks with the bridges - usually a design flaw anyway (gusset plate for that I-36 bridge one-have any of you actually seen the size of it- not that there was any reduncy built in)....Actually they are building a new forth road bridge over here as our 50 year olde one is just about totally buggered

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Road_Bridge
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensferry_Crossing

And a truly beautiful bridge completed in 1890 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Bridge google pictures of it makes your Golden gate look like a pile of shite – which they are retrofitting to withstand and earth quake of whats 7ish? Not that that will be enough. Actually part of me thinks its 6.ish anyone?

China infrastructure is shit and they have a toxic pollution problem – now this isn’t exactly helped by weather patterns. But if they had spend monet more wisely this would not be an issue

Infrastructure USA dunno – UK is also shit, or certainly poor even by European standards

What surprises me is that not more "big-critical" structures fail everywhere

but it was the lack of inspections that gave no warning to how soon the plates would fail. One of palenty's budget cuts prior to the collapse was bridge inspectors.

I agree with the his statement "We thought we had done all we could..." because with the budget he had.... it was.

If I do understand your pigin you seem to be saying that inspection was the problem, yet your article says it was the initial design. Just so you know, inspectors are non-technical people that check and make sure what the design says should be there is what is there. As I don't expect you to understand the process, I'll refrain from mentioning how stupid the comment was.

WickedsDesire -> RE: Chinese billionaire says US wastes trillions on war instead of infrastructure and its own people (4/13/2017 10:33:46 AM)

You can actually argue that maintenance and inspection should have picked this up...these should be ever evolving....it seemed to me on the Forth Road bridge they decided it was about to undergo catastrophic failure…environment – load-design etc

Quality control assurance inspection, call it what you will – I can categorically assure you when the monetary cuts start they are the first to go

As I said ;) what surprises me there arnt more failures in certain countries eg UK USA China Russia etc

Do you know I am not even sure if they inspect Carron Valley Dam let me dig out a pic - path evacuation procedure none. Think I am in the path of that one.

The 1,000-acre (4.0 km2) Strathcarron Reservoir, completed in 1939 guffaws - hell that will have been under designed.

But we do not really have many dams, or truly massive ones

oh I get it..... ur saying bridge inspectors aren't engineers with at least a bachelors degree or better well..... http://study.com/articles/Bridge_Inspector_Job_Description_and_Requirements.html

Education Requirements

Most entry-level jobs require a high school diploma or GED and certification. More advanced positions require higher education such as a bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering.

Many universities offer bridge inspection training courses for certification training. The National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) requires that such courses to be approved by the Federal Highway Administration. A typical training course explores steel, concrete and timber bridge evaluation; tools and safety; steel deterioration and waterway evaluation. Students also learn how to understand federal codes and inventory forms.

Certification

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) offers four levels of certification in bridge safety inspection from entry-level to senior level, which can be sought after an inspector gains relevant work experience. Applicants must pass a written exam to become certified. Depending on state requirements, bridge inspectors may also need to gain SCUBA certification to evaluate bridge conditions underwater. To become SCUBA-certified, bridge inspectors must complete a diving training program. Similar to NBIS-approved training courses, colleges often offer bridge inspection refresher courses to keep inspectors current on regulations and practices or to renew their inspection certification.

Bridge inspectors are pretty smart people with many with majors or minors in metalurgy, CAD, and other construction disciplines. Inspectors in general are as technical as the builders and Designers (like Me) whos work they keep their eyes on.

Everybody's trying to "out conservative" each other by cutting taxes and spending.

But somethings cost money and need to be done--like road and bridge maintenance.

Putting it off increases the cost of the maintenance.

I fully agree, in fact they are already commenting that the "new" I-35W bridge is showing its age, because it too was a rush job.

Minnesota alone has statewide 100's of bridges that need serious work, or outright replacement.

The bridge was heavily inspected ever since 2001 when it was declared 'Structurally deficient'.
The Gusset Plates where only inspected by eye, and because there was no significant Corrosion on the plates or connectors, they too passed. This is because the inspection was based on the assumption that the plates was built to a higher standard then they actually where, and thus didn't take structural stresses of the plates into account.

A 2003 picture of the gusset plate:
[image]https://img.apmcdn.org/f0a24aa2db7ce6dd6896b2313509b75bf89c5ff0/uncropped/b6005a-20080324-bent.jpg[/image]

While the image shows slight bowing, it shows no corrosion.

And because inspectors are trained to look more for this:
(large image)
it would of continually passed inspection.

Regardless of the budget or inspection schedule - because the inspection itself wasn't looking for this kind of damage specifically, it would of never found it.

quote:

prior to that collapse, the closest inspection was when?

and the collapse happened when?

URS Corp. an independent contractor, performed annual inspections between 2001 and 2007
May 2007 the state performed point inspections on key weak points of the bridge, less then 3 months before the failure.
During the month of June and July, 2007, 2.4 Million dollars of maintenance was performed on the bridge.

The bridge collapsed August 1st 2007 during those repairs.

had the bridge not collapsed, the bridge would of been re-inspected during the month of august once repairs had concluded.

quote:

and the state of Minnesota settled with the victims/survivor's of the collapse when?

They didn't...
In 2012, the California based designed company Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., which had acquired the defunct company Sverdrup & Parcel and Associates, Inc. that originally built the bridge, reached a settlement of 8.9 Million dollars to the State of Minnesota.

Do you mean Tim Pawlenty?
Although there is no term limit in Minnesota, most governors only run for 2 terms... and in 2011 wasn't he in the running for President of the United States?

And of course bridges where heavily inspected after it came to light that the company Sverdrup & Parcel and Associates, Inc had performed shoddy construction. It drew into question ALL things built by that company...

Actually, your level of "ignance" regarding what you just posted makes it impossible to actually respond to you. You don't even understand what you don't understand. Let me just point out one. A major or minor in CAD. Do you know what that is? It's Computer Added Drafting. Somebody tells them what to draw and without understanding why, they draw it. Now, you may have to be pretty smart to do that, obviously beyond your intellectual talents, but it doesn't even imply they know how to calculate a shear or moment on a bridge structure. (Ya, I used technical words you can...maybe...Google)

I guess they waited a little long for repairs then which means.......wait for it........neglect.

Anyways.
Here's a link that has almost 2 dozen US bridge collapses in the last 20 years that I found in under 10 seconds.
Wanna bet some of those were due to 'neglect' or as highway officials who want to hold onto their job a bit longer call it "overdeferred maintenance" [:D]
