I thought Colossus had been generally written as having been raised Greek Orthodox, even if he's lapsed, since the Soviet Union collapsed in the early '90s? I thought that the communist/atheist stuff was mostly from the '80s
You're forgetting Nightcrawler (who's a priest when he's not dead), Professor X, Moira McTaggert and Banshee, who are all Catholics.

See? Now I had to look something up.

Colossus makes his debut in 1975 in issue #1 of Giant Sized X-Men. He hits the regular X-Men pages in issue #122 in 1979. Since most mutations/abilities are supposed to manifest right around puberty,*** that would have put Colossus as being raised in Communist Russia. As far as I know, Colossus has always had 'at will' control of his transformation abilities, so it was not necessary for him to be a student at Xavier's school. He is, however, often seen at the school in both the comics and the movies because he is supposedly the school's art teacher.

Nightcrawler is probably the most prominent Catholic. Two of the more ironic Catholics are Gambit (Cajon Catholic) and Deadpool (lapsed). There's another character by the name of Aurora who is supposedly a Catholic nun.

***There are conflicting depictions in the movies about when/how mutant abilities become apparent. More often than not, the mutations become evident in the beginning or the tail end of puberty, though it can be earlier if the person experiences a huge, traumatic event in early childhood.

Given that the characters tend not to age in real time, I'm sure Colossus' backstory will have been revised so that Xavier didn't come to fetch him off a collectivist farm in the Urals back in '75 now: that'd put him in his sixties, which is a bit old for saving the world. It seems a bit of an oversight if nobody's thought to fix that since the early '90s...

(Is Aurora one of Alpha Flight?)

What is a 'collectivist' farm?

A farm in the soviet union as imagined by a comics writer who'd never been to the soviet union in 1975.
Obviously.

Very good, on both counts!

We really don't know much about which characters age in normal time and which ones don't, with only a few exceptions. Mutants with regenerative powers (i.e., Wolverine and Sabertooth) are made out to have a very slow aging process, while mutants with other types of abilities (i.e. Magneto and Prof X) seem to age at the same rate as humans. By all rights, Mystique should be the same age as Magneto and Prof X, but she never appears to be. Like Colossus, she is an 'at will' transforming ability, who does not retain the form she has shifted to when unconscious.

Aurora is one of Alpha Flight. She is another mutant who's powers became evident because of critical points of stress. (She was attempting commit suicide when her own split personality/powers invoked to save her.) As far as I know, Jean Grey is the only other mutant that has Dissociative Identity Disorder. The Phoenix (aka the Dark Phoenix) is not the primary personality. Aurora is not the primary personality, either.

Aurora is the twin sister of Northstar, (another member of the Alpha Flight) and both of them have increase 'beacon of light' ability when in the other twin's presence. Both have similar abilities. One very distinct difference. Northstar was the first openly gay mutant.

It is a term I encounter quite often but have yet to find anyone who uses it that is able to define it.
Just checking.

Thanks. I know they've made a point of rejuvenating Magneto a couple of times so that they could keep the holocaust as part of his backstory, but they haven't (I don't think) done anything like that with Xavier. I think the only other characters with backstories involving the second world war who haven't been retconned so that they're younger are Wolverine, Nick Fury and Captain America, and a few of their villains.

thompson: Len Wein certainly didn't define it...
