the point is that melting to liquid form is not instantaneous, if it was instantanious - then the object in question would explode.

If one applies an oxy/ acetylene flame to steel it melts virtually instantaneously without exploding.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

actually it does, causing it to pop, bubble and spark excessively...

Maybe next year when you get to high school you might take a shop class where they teach welding.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

it is just limited to a small point and not the entire object

Learn to read dumb ass. It melts where the fame is.

So the instant you take ice out of the freezer it is automatically (spontaneously/very quickly) reduced to it's liquid form because room temp is well above the freezing point? Or does it instead require prolonged exposure over a period of time before it is rendered down to it's liquid form?

Water molecules in a solid crystal form below 0 C are held together by weak attractions between the hydrogen and oxygen of linked molecules, BUT the molecules are moving (vibrating, twisting) in place. They still have energy. This is true of any particles held in solid form. Not only water molecules. Iron molecules in a solid piece of iron have energy and vibrate in place. All molecules in solids are moving unless they have been reduced to absolute Zero on the Kelvin scale. The lack of heat energy is the lack of motion or vice versa.

Ice cubes in the freezer already contain energy and vibrating molecules. When you remove a cube from the freezer the molecules at the surface of the cube absorb heat energy from the room air (more rapidly moving oxygen and nitrogen molecules) The air molecules lose energy and slow down while the water molecules at the surface of the cube gain enough energy to break free and flow. This is the beginning of the melting process. The water molecules innermost in the crystals remain linked, are still vibrating in place, and will continue to do so until they are heated enough to break away. So melting of any solid material is a process. It is instantaneous only in your time frame. As the cube gets smaller (less dense) atmospheric pressure pushes air molecules into abandoned space. As you know you can bend a piece of metal by heating it in a particular spot to temporarily excite the vibrating molecules to separate, but then if you are a blacksmith you plunge the shoe into water as soon as you have the desired shape; you immediately remove the heat from the temporarily excited molecules before they can break free in a flow. Melting has nothing to do with combustion. Melting of ice can take place in heated neon or any inert gas.

what makes you think he was talking about combustion? 'no change' is instantaneous. Only someone with little to no understanding of physics could even utter such crap.

It was not I who introduced the word "instantaneous" into this squirrely discourse. Some exothermic reactions might happen so quickly and violently they could be considered instantaneous, depending on your time frame.

Your adament proclamation is quite silly.

however it is you who is defending the use of the word instantaneous when it is a false characterization and the fact that it is incorrect has been brought to your attention, and despite its a scientific fact you like a few others out here wnat everyone to accept bullshit as reality. No its a statement of scientific (physics) fact, not a proclamation, silly or otherwise, however that is fitting for yours.

Really absurd. The whole point of my description of the melting of an ice cube was to point out that most chemical and physical changes are not instantaneous. I don't understand how you could have read "instantaneous" into that process of peeling away surface molecules. Quite amazing.

its not 'instantaneous' in any timeframe. nothing in this universe is instant with regard to science, now if you want to sit at a bar or banter nonsense over tea and crumpets sure then I stand down, but last time I checked the title of the thread said science not tea time blather.

Thermate cutter charges will zip through a one inch steel beam in a couple miliseconds once the reaction starts

pretty cool huh? Its what they used to take out the towers but its not instant not even a real one thats oxygen boosted.

thats 1" rebar, this is just a backyard throw together special with no oxy boost.

The beauty in these are that they are nearly silent no bang and the only trace is molten iron dust sprayed all over that hardens as fine as dust, and molten iron when you cut really thick stuff. Most people didnt even know these existed, hell they still dont.

The cutting speed of an oxy/cety torch isnt even in the same universe but if you wanna talk closer to instant there you have it, keep in mind this one cuts slow compared to the real mCcoy.

No, I was not apologizing for Tommy. He's a big boy; he can take care of himself.

You and I actually agree about "instantaneous" not being a factor in physics. That's why I said it was a process. UNLESS the observer wants it to be. Then, the only way it can be is relative to his time frame. This is what i said: It is instantaneous only in your time frame. Notice the bold word only. That means it is NOT instantaneous unless the observer wants to make it so, and if he does he can only do so by relating it to a time frame.

nuff said.

no its not nuff said, you are trying to jam square peg relativity into a round newtonian hole. instantaneous in the physics world since there is no such thing that I am aware of it is meaningless outside its traditional usage which is to denote a specific value [of something/measurement] at a specific moment in time, hence chronologicaly you add up all the instances [points] which result in some sort of line or curve. For instance you can say instantaneous heat transfer, or pressure or...... and that would amount to a single zero [time] 'width' point on a time line typically followed by successive instantaneous values to form a curve. To use it in terms to mean 'fast' in a physics conversation is not appropriate, when describing the properties of something under examination, at least I have never seen it, however I dont do physics for a living either so maybe you can cough up a citation from some university where it used in a relative context to describe the properties of something I will concede.

instantaneous has a few senses of definitions in physics, as it does in normal life. there is the obvious mathematical one, where the timeslice approaches zero: instantaneous speed, instantaneous velocity. And there is the much less rigorous one where you walk into a room and flick on the light switch, and the light comes on instantaneously. In the abscence of other observers and other frames of reference, it is in your world, instantaneous. as given by special relativity when the too big car fits into the garage at high speed. It is an apparition, apparently.

a jet fuel based fire took out the towers... not some contrived theoretical cutting device which was invented and patented ~5 years after the event.

but really whats the point in arguing it...

I thought the UK Zionist army of WW2 dropping their bombs, made from Jew gold, instantaneously atomised 500 000 at Dresden.

The only thing that I know that is truly instantaneous is the Quantum spaghetti entanglement malarkey.

Something like the speed of light is actually, relatively, fairly puny.

awe Witto Dick thinking without a brain was your first mistake. yes in fact burned human body parts were found 16 miles outside dresden as a result of the high winds the fire created, and when the fire is hot enough to glaze over stone walls in the basement it will in fact vaporize all the people. It takes amere 2 brain cells to figure that out. I have no idea if zionist wall street and rothschild marching in concert with britain and france who were responsible for the atrocites used 'jew gold' or not, that is your conclusion and from what I have seen so far you arent remotely close to a sharp tack much less the sharpest tack in the box
