oh no comrades, fox news!

quote:

More than 100 students at the University of California, Santa Cruz took over an administration building on Tuesday, calling school officials to meet demands on changes at the campus.

The group African/Black Student Alliance organized the protest where about 150 students blockaded Kerr Hall about 1 p.m., KGO-TV reported. They chained the front door closed and barred other openings with furniture.

Good morning everyone! Things are great here at reclaimed Kerr Hall. #MeetABSADemands pic.twitter.com/PesmmkqDQ2

The protesters are pushing the administration to guarantee four-year housing at Rosa Parks African American Themed House, located at Stevenson College. The building is a housing option for students interested in "historical, present-day, and future experiences of predominately Black/African American peoples," according to the university's website.

The protesters also want the house painted red, green and black, and want the university to offer diversity competency training to incoming students, KGO-TV reported.

The protesters told school officials they would remain at Kerr Hall until their requests are met.

"We gave the chancellor a simple, very simple list of demands that will uplift and affirm the humanity of our black people, we will be here until our demands are met and we are not leaving until our demands are met," the group said in a statement to KGO-TV.

Scott Hernandez-Jason, a UC Santa Cruz spokesman, said in a statement to Fox News that the protest is peaceful and the chancellor is working with student groups to address their concerns.

"Our focus is on ensuring the safety of staff who work in the building and of the students who took over the building," Hernandez-Jason said in the statement.

"Chancellor George Blumenthal has been working with several student groups, including the African/Black Student Alliance and the Black Experience Team, over the past year to explore ways to effectively address some of their concerns. We’ve taken some steps forward, including hiring a recruitment specialist and a retention specialist, and continue to discuss how we can make sure that all students feel supported and have a sense of belonging."

The African/Black Student Alliance is said to be one of the largest and oldest student organization at UC Santa Cruz, the university website stated.

I don't see the "taking over of a building" as "peaceful."

forcibly remove them? have them arrested? expelled? allow them to continue?

Musicmystery -> RE: Student protesters take over UC Santa Cruz administration building (5/4/2017 5:16:05 AM)

I don't see it as "peaceful" either. Or productive.

The difficulty here is two-fold:
- they are also the school's clients;
- it's a potential PR nightmare (which would hurt enrollment and $)

So no easy answers. Not like outsiders taking over private property.

Our society, from college students to congress, has really lost touch with how to bring about effective change.

I don't know the answer.

Comrade college boy does not seem to have much historical knowledge. From the boston tea party to this there has been an unbroken line of active protest to real or imagined oppression.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

They would only need to give a few wood shampoos to send a message to the rest or firehoses or beanbag shotguns.

They're criminals. Fuck 'em and feed 'em green beans.

Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing...

I have an idea. How about bringing these ideologically afflicted students up to a level of competency in the subject area of diversity training itself. I know, I know. Education. Too radical. Nevermind.

When people divide into categories to illustrate the idea of diversity, it reinforces the idea of the categories. Which, if you think about it, is the essential problem of prejudice in the first place. People aren’t prejudiced against real people; they’re prejudiced against categories . . . Categories are dehumanizing. They simplify the complexity of a human being. ~Source

Do people who undergo training usually shed their biases? Researchers have been examining that question since before World War II, in nearly a thousand studies. It turns out that while people are easily taught to respond correctly to a questionnaire about bias, they soon forget the right answers. The positive effects of diversity training rarely last beyond a day or two, and a number of studies suggest that it can activate bias or spark a backlash. ~Source

Notwithstanding the enormous literature on prejudice, psychologists are a long way from demonstrating the most effective ways to reduce prejudice. Due to weaknesses in the internal and external validity of existing research, the literature does not reveal whether, when, and why interventions reduce prejudice in the world. Entire genres of prejudice-reduction interventions, including diversity training, educational programs, and sensitivity training in health and law enforcement professions, have never been evaluated with experimental methods. ~Source

Maybe introduce them to the training housing and emplyment program that worked for my father.

Bootcamp, barracks and deployment situations where you had to trust the person who had your back, no matter their ethnic history.

My dad grew up in tbe deep south, and had some pretty solid prejudices. I remember him telling me, he got over that foolishness real quick, shortly after bootcamp.

Then again, military training isn't big on diversity.

I wonder why guaranteed 4 year housing? If tbe purpose of the housing is to give incoming students the opportunity to expeience living in su h a themed housing, then unless the theme changes - why do they need four years looking at the same theme? Rotating out the students, would allow more students to have a shared experience.

Termyn8or -> RE: Student protesters take over UC Santa Cruz administration building (5/4/2017 11:30:58 PM)

So, they want what, free housing for four years ? Send them to prison for four years. They want the building painted ? What a bunch of idiocy. And diversity training for new students ? That's going to go over like sliced bread I am sure. We have enough goddamn diversity training in this world.

Bullshit like this is why I could never support OWS. They were protesting not being able to afford the better beamer. They blame their problems on the banks which gave them like $100,000 to get a degree in basketweaving. And shit like art history is basketweaving for all practical purposes because there are few jobs in the field.

But nobody wants to learn the math for things like engineering or something useful. Part of that is because of the way they teach it now, but people do get through it. Nobody wants to learn strength of materials or applied force vectors and all that. They don't even want to read the spec sheet on a transistor. They way to look at a work be DaVinci and say "Mmm hmm" and have that eloquent response published in all the journals because by god, they got letters after their name.

But back to the point here. What those students did is illegal. You do not forcibly take over that which belongs to someone else. As such, the way I see it they just blew their future as convicted felons. Same way with Ammon Bundy. Not Cliven, he has real legal claims and notice they can only seem to get him on those tertiary claims. But Cliven Bundy did not take over a government building, or other building that was not his. He just had your basic standoff, and they came to him. But the shit up in Oregon, I cannot support that.

But one nice thing is that this shows the intolerance of liberals. They want to control your speech, and now they want a college building painted to their liking and affect the curriculum of the school. Does that sound like tolerance to you ? They have shown lately that they do not practice what they preach. If they keep it up they will probably lose enough support to propel Trump into a second term. We all know what happens when a President gets a second term and cannot run again. All the nasty shit in the back of his mind comes out. Who knows what he has clunking around in there.

So they are demanding the building get painted ? They committed a felony to get that ? What stupidity. When you do shit like that the stakes have to be alot higher. Wait until they wake up and find that they can't get certain jobs, can't carry a gun, maybe not even get a CDL. Wait for a few years and when they fill out a job application and it says "Are you a convicted felon ?" and they can't really lie.

My buddy Mike had a term for such people - "Young and dumb and full of cum". Pretty much fits here I think.

And as far as getting your record expunged, which you can usually do years after your only felony in many states, is not the perfect solution. The record still shows that you HAD a record but it is now hidden. They don't know if you got your fifth DUI or mowed down a truckload of nuns with an AK-47. If it is a really minor felony it is almost not worth getting it expunged. But what they did was an act of violence.

Personally I would send in troops, and not with rubber bullets like Kent State. You come into my house and even demand I change the TV channel you are leaving on a slab with lead in your body. You do not forcibly take control of what is not yours. If you do, you have crossed the line and as far as I am concerned you are no longer human, you are an animal. And you will be put down.

T^T

Hi Thompsonx:

You use this quote a great deal. You aren't exactly wrong. Yet, you aren't exactly on target either.

I have 4 sons, and 2 unofficially adopted sons that did fill out the draft card. Every escalation that hints of war has my heart sinking.

My dad, and my father both served. you think the families of soldiers aren't all in?

My son trained for a year with his Marine recruiter and was scheduled and had his heart and soul set on serving, but he was denied over a health issue. I still feel guilty for the relief I felt, even knowing how heartbroken he was. It was his dream to serve.

If war came to America, I would join a local militia, serve as a medic or do whatever is necessary.

I wish and hope for world peace, but I still hit the gun range and even as a 52 year old lady, would take up arms and fight for my family and my country.

ETA: you aren't wrong, I find it tragic that so many of our young people are sacrificed to war. That doesn't mean that I don't think a military training wouldn't be a good exercise in discipline and respect.

Hi Thompsonx:

You use this quote a great deal.

Perhaps there is a good reason?

You aren't exactly wrong.

I am right more often than I am wrong...so the odds are in my favor.

Yet, you aren't exactly on target
either.

Yes I am and in the center of the v ring.

I have 4 sons, and 2 unofficially adopted sons that did fill out the draft card. Every
escalation that hints of war has my heart sinking.

My dad, and my father both served. you think the families of soldiers aren't all in?

There have been soldiers in my family since 'rogers rangers'. Jar-heads in every generation since 1832.

My son trained for a year with his Marine recruiter

Marine recruiters are lying scumbag pieces of shit only interested in meeting their quotas
of cannon fodder.

and was scheduled and had his heart and
soul set on serving, but he was denied over a health issue.

Maybe there is a god.

I still feel guilty for the relief I felt,

Stop feeling guilty and start feeling lucky.

even knowing how heartbroken he was. It was his dream to serve.

When a dream is based on a lie why would you support it?

If war came to America,

Which war has amerika been in that we did not start or insinuate ourselves into for profit?

I would join a local militia, serve as a medic or do whatever is necessary.

I wish and hope for world peace,

Then stop voting for the punkassmotherphoquers who pimp it.

but I still hit the gun range and even as a 52 year old lady,

Girl...I got shoes older than that[;)]

would take up arms and fight for my family and my country.

When in the history of amerika has that ever happened?

ETA: you aren't wrong,

I very seldom am.

I find it tragic that so many of our young people are sacrificed to war.

If only those who make more than a quarter million dollars a year were allowed in the military
there would be no more young people sacrificed.
Remember there was no organized vocal resistance to the viet nam war until middle class white
boys started coming home in rubber bags. As long as it was the lowest economic fraction of our
population, you know ...'niggers, mexicans and poor white trash'... no one gave a shit.

That doesn't mean that I don't think a military training wouldn't be a good exercise in
discipline and respect.

Discipline and respect are the responsibility of parents not the government.

alas...

"UC Santa Cruz agrees to demands of students who occupied Kerr Hall"

quote:

SANTA CRUZ >> UC Santa Cruz has agreed to the demands of the Afrikan Black Student Alliance after a three-day occupation of Kerr Hall, the primary administration building on campus.

To loud cheers of victory, UCSC director of News and Media Relations Scott Hernandez-Jason stood before hundreds of students at Kerr Hall about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and announced that the university was committed to better serving its African, black and Caribbean-identified students.

To illustrate this, UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal agreed to the Alliance’s demands and made the following commitments:

• UCSC committed to extending up to a four-year housing guarantee to all students from underrepresented communities who applied to and live in the Rosa Parks African American Theme House.

• UCSC committed to converting the first floor lounge area of the Rosa Parks African American Theme House from housing back to a community lounge space.

• USCS committed to painting the exterior of the Rosa Parks African American Theme House in the Pan-Afrikan colors red, gold and green.

• USCS committed to delivering a mandatory “educational diversity” orientation to all incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Two hours earlier, an agreement that would end the three-day occupation did not seem likely. About 3:30 p.m., members of the Alliance leadership announced through a bullhorn that Blumenthal had declined to meet at Kerr Hall, citing concerns for his safety.

Instead, Blumenthal sent members of his administration, including campus diversity officer Linda Scholz, to speak with the students at the entrance of Kerr Hall. Surrounded by hundreds of chanting, screaming students, Scholz invited the leadership group of the Alliance to speak with Blumenthal in the nearby Thimann Labs building.

It initially appeared as if the Alliance would decline to speak with Blumenthal and, instead, insist the chancellor meet on their terms. However, the leadership group eventually accompanied the administrators to Thimann Labs.

After more than an hour in conference, the Alliance leadership and Hernandez-Jason returned to Kerr Hall to announce the university’s decision and allow the students to celebrate their victory.

Hernandez-Jason said he assumed this agreement meant that Kerr Hall would now be vacated by the students, although he did not appear to have a written agreement from the Alliance.

The protest, which made national news, has not been without its controversies. The Alliance refused to speak to local media, verbally harassing and threatening to press unspecified charges against the Sentinel for covering the occupation. However, it did grant an interview to Tucker Carlson of Fox News.

The Alliance said local media was “trespassing” on property they had “reclaimed.”

In addition, during the rally that preceded the occupation of Kerr Hall on Tuesday at Quarry Plaza, members of the Afrikan Black Student Alliance verbally attacked Jewish students, according to Santa Cruz Hillel Director Sarah Cohen Domont.

“Our students were, on three separate instances, subjected to protesters yelling, (expletives and anti-Semitic insults) and one of our Israeli flags was torn down,” wrote Cohen Domont in a public statement. “The ABSA called for protesters to stand in solidarity with their Palestinian brothers and sisters.”

Tuesday was Israel Independence Day. Santa Cruz Hillel and its “pro-Israel partners” had gathered in Quarry Plaza to celebrate.
