Classy.
Why has this thread turned into a pissing match about who'd make the best mod? It's entertaining to watch certain posters demonstrating that they'd be even less trustworthy with mod privileges than She Who Must Not Be Named, but it's pointless as even those who might be able to moderate worth a shit won't get so appointed anyway, never mind the trollish roadkill on the information superhighway...

I doubt changing the forum guidelines would be of any use.

My thoughts on moderation:

The only thing it does is unite people in having a common thing to bitch about.

There is no power in being a moderator, you aren't the boss of the forum, you are a servant and it's work. If a moderator is acting as if they are in charge, they aren't moderating, they are playing favorites or bullying.

People don't like to be called out on their bad behavior, so instead of behaving properly they either act petty and send ridiculous amounts of reports about whomever they feel isn't getting spanked as hard as they are or they spend a ridiculous amount of time obsessing about the moderator .

If we want a better forum, take personal responsibility for our own way of communicating and moderate our own behaviors.
If someone behaves in an offensive manner, move on. You don't have to engage. If you do, you don't have to be equally inappropriate. If you are, then you are equally part of the problem.

On the other hand this is politics, if someone attacks another with a constant barage of ad hominem attacks or as often is the case outright lies to further their political agenda or peddle bullshit one has an obligation to correct them.

If you have any obligations in a debate, it is to state your own truth and the facts as you see them.
If the debate becomes about the individual, then you aren't really engaging in facts. You are engaging in attacks.

ETA, These are my point of view. It is how I hold myself accountable and how I try to do my best, not to allow myself any personal satisfaction in attacking any individual on these boards.

Nope, but you have been suggested as a suitable mod by a few others, which is what I'm assuming led to Barry Mckenzie's fit of pissiness above.

Better to disengage from them and their lot of three or four, and leave them in a corner to play with their blocks and toy ducks. You will never correct them; they are hardass uncorrectable; it is the subtext of their argument.

The whole "you're too stupid/inexperienced/intellectually conservative/otherwise lacking to understand my brilliant insights" thing is a signifier for that attitude, I've noticed. Somebody who's actually as smart as they claim will try to explain stuff rather than throwing a tantrum...

winsome, I don't think theres anything you said there that id disagree with.

im very libertarian in nature and I don't automatically want to turn to "law" in order to constrain behavior.

but at the same time, im aware of a few things, one is what happened in "lord of the flies," another is the corrupting influence of vandalism and garbage, and the last is the notion of "all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

so what religion do we base this good and evil on to make such moral determinations?

Here's a happy thought - if we had a real moderator (not your good pal crazy Lucy), dirtbags like you would be the first to go

Bounty,

If I recall "The Lord of the Flies," correctly; a group of children were left stranded on an island and left to survive on their own. It got ugly, pretty fast.

As adults, we should have learned to temper our actions and have conversations civilly. At the very least, accept that if we react inappropriately, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. If our purpose on these forums are to sling shit and provoke reactions, then there isn't anything a moderator can do. You just get the same person, with a new name, behaving the same way.

The only control any person has on this forum is their own choice in how to communicate and the owner who could, if they do choose, close the place down.

its not so much that they were children as much as that they were English children who had been brought up to know the difference between right/wrong and good/bad, but left to their own devices outside of a societal structure that constrained them, yes they devolved into a state of nature.

im suggesting that good moderation would provide, in part, the local societal structure.

yeh the last thing you would ever want is people devoloving into a state of 'nature', like the biblical garden of eden zog forbid

so its ok with you to impose your moral base upon others?
