Good post, termy. One of your better ones. The Common Market (as it was) was basically no more than a trading platform that offered a zero-tariff zone at a time when WTO-style rules (and worse) were commonplace around the world. Even the political and legal bits were ok because to have laws that were common across the area made sense so people knew what was what no matter which country you were in. It was all good and working until the EU started getting very political and started behaving like a dick-tator. The final nail in the coffin was the Lisbon Treaty of 2007. It was a re-write of the agreements we had and it was awful. Whether you love or hate Farage, he was right when he said that several countries didn't want it but they [the EU autocrats] managed to sneak it in by the back door. Tons and tons of food is/was wasted because of loony EU laws and prices are held artificially high. Who the fuck cares if cucumbers had more than a 5 degree curve in them?? It's a friggin' cucumber FFS and perfectly edible. But oh no, those dick-tators said they had to be straight and forced the growers to grow them (at great expense) in special straight glass tubes so we get straight cucumbers. And that's just one example of literally thousands of loony laws they dreamed up. So yeah, it was getting a bit too much. And like your washing machine example, the EU have decided that we can't have hoovers of more than 1900 watts. Really?? Like WTF?? Are they kidding? Fuck off and go pound sand, assholes. Apparently not; it's now a law that all new hoovers must be lower than 1900 watts. Jeeezus fucking H christ on a pogo stick!?! What the fuck are they going to come up with next?? When election time came round again, he knew he was on a hiding to nowhere. His only saving-face option was to promise a referendum on membership of the EU. A simple Yes/No In/Out vote for the people to decide. His nonchelant attitude told me that he thought it would be a walkover, a walk in the park, a landslide, a pushover, whatever euphemism floats your boat. As a relative youngster, he had no idea how strong the opposition was with us older voters who could remember the better days before the EU and when it was working properly. I think he was genuinely shocked that we voted to leave because I firmly believe that he had no 'Plan B'. If you look at the stats, the younger generation (who knew no different) tended to vote remain. The older generation tended to vote to leave as they had lived thru both times and could judge. As for guns, I do like to hear when a good guy kills a bad one. Yeah, I know that sounds strange coming from my cultural background. I think what worries us over here is the number of innocents that get killed or badly injured because some dumb fuck asshole with a gun behaved badly and there's too many of them. In a lot of cases, it turns out that they shouldn't have been able to have a gun - but they did. I even cited a youtube video that showed a non-US citizen (and obviously British by his accent) was able to obtain firearms and ammo with no checks and no questions asked. So where are the law enforcement?? They are falling down on the job! There will always be a black market for almost anything so laws won't ever completely stop that. But it does seem the under-counter trade in guns and ammo is rife in the US. And you're right. The world is indeed very fucked up. The thing is.... where are all the leaders?? We haven't had anyone of decent calibre for decades. And to have a prez that's a known bankrupt, no less than 4 times, running the country?? Shit.... that's a very scary thought and worrysome. We'll see what he does; but so far, I'm not impressed.

The majority of the gun related crime is a result of a faulty system of checks and balances. We have the laws and they're good ones. They just aren't enforced uniformity and with regularity. To add, the punishments for breaking those laws are thwarted by liberal components of the judicial system. In the countries where guns are taken from the hands of citizens there is still murder and violent crime, it doesn't go away. We're not so far out of average world wide in that regard. Yes we have a relatively high gun/ murder rate but as stated the majority of that stems from the actions of a relatively small segment of society. For example Chicago. 2016 saw over 4000 shooting victims. Those crimes were centralized in the SW section of the city. Traditionally, as Jim Croce sang it "The baddest part of town" where gang and drug violence prevails. The US may be perceived as a country of "wild West" shoot em ups by you in the UK and that's fine. Stay there, we don't want your tripe spewed about here. The facts are the "majority" of gun violence is perpetrated by people ignoring the law. More laws will not deter those who ignore the law. Gun confiscation will not deter those who ignore the law. Why should we (hypothetically) wait until guns are illegal to enforce the laws? Take my guns and I have no protection against those people should I ever have the misfortune of encountering one. The police? They do what they can but it's often too little too late. We have laws on the books now, we have punishments to deter illegal gun use now. Tell the judicial system to use those tools without remorse and see how it works. In the FBI stats I mentioned before weapons overall included knives, strangulation, poison, etc. Are you naive enough to think the murder rate will disappear with gun control?
