Greta75 -> Lunch Shaming (5/6/2017 9:25:03 AM)

In some schools, children are forced to mop cafeteria floors. In others, their hot meal is taken away and thrown in the trash. In extreme cases, students are sent home with a stamp on their arm that reads "I owe lunch money."

Such scenes, worthy of a Charles Dickens novel, have played out in schools across the United States as students whose parents fall behind in meal payments endure what is called "lunch shaming."

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/us-moves-ban-lunch-shaming-kids-unpaid-meals-131419428.html

OMFG! These schools should be punished!

Because the US seem to have Cafeteria that served standard food for school children. I always assume the food is part of the school fees. I didn't know they have to pay 2bux or so for each meal.

But I can't even imagine running a school and being so callous!

I remember when I was in school, if we didn't have money for food, the teacher will just lend us and we just need to return them another day. Even the Cafeteria people would be kind and let you take the food first, and pay the next day.

I mean, sometimes US has no right to question Human Rights in other countries, when, they are shaming poor kids who cannot afford Lunch Money!

And the Article is Right. Even in Prison, you get 3 meals a day for FREE.

This is bullshit! And why only New Mexico is banning Lunch Shaming? The whole country should ban Lunch Shaming!

I am a manager in an elementary school cafeteria. There are plenty of us who do all we can to keep a child from receiving an alternate meal, including reaching into our own pockets.

Until the laws are changed regarding the National School Lunch Program, we will continue to have to occasionally deny a student the regular meal for the day.

Most of us do it with discretion and compassion, but we do not make the news.

Those who do make the news for being insensitive give folks like you who have no fucking clue a reason to call us names.

So this is, either, not much of a real problem when compassionate adults actually work in the real world with some common sense or it is a problem of a centralized government mandate?

Kaliko -> RE: Lunch Shaming (5/6/2017 10:27:02 AM)

New Hampshire passed a law recently that the ability to pay for lunches will not impact a student's ability to receive the standard lunch. (Not an alternate lunch - the same lunch as everybody else.) I'm sure we're not the first state to do so, and won't be the last.

kiwisub22 -> RE: Lunch Shaming (5/6/2017 10:27:50 AM)

And there are always adults who want to game the system, owe hundreds of dollars and let their kids experience the result.

Nothing is ever as black and white as the media paints it -especially nowadays, when the media has a political agenda, one side or another.

Most everything you read or see needs to be taken with a grain of salt, and a questioning attitude - as in , what did the media leave out?

I would give those 2 things about 50/50 honestly.

In California it's easy for any student to get two and even tree meals a day, sometimes even on weekends and holidays. All that is required is the parent apply and state they live below a certain financial level. And it's illigal for the school or anyone to check that statment made by the parent against reality. So here, a lot of well off families with fewer scruples feed at the free trough.

As a teacher who has helped to make sure kids don't go without, along with many others at my school, and as a parent who has had the occasional day where my kid has come home with the lunch money stamp, I agree that what makes the news should be taken with more than a few grains of salt.

With respect, having read about myself, and situations I was involved in, many times in the news I wonder why anyone reads it for other than entertainment.

My mum was divorced and didn’t keep well so were poor. "Free" meals for us paupers and wretch types were a blessing at secondary school…that was about 30 odd years ago. I am not sure what the UK rules are nowadays, and if they differ in Scotland to England.

I think as time passes it devolves, and there is more shame recently nowadays with being poor as in days of olde almst all were equally poor. Stigmata. I love how the inhumane, monsters and usually people of the “right” persuasion scream how the poor people are taking all their money.

That reminds what lying orange fuk did this the other day? White House relaxes Obama-era healthy school lunch rules http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-39778238.

The Trump administration has loosened nutritional standards aimed at making US school lunches healthier that were championed by former first lady Michelle Obama.

New Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue postponed reductions in sodium, relaxed requirements for whole grains and allowed sweetened flavoured milk back.

One in five US children is obese, the US government says.

More than 30m mostly poor children eat federally-funded school lunches.

Termyn8or -> RE: Lunch Shaming (5/6/2017 12:49:56 PM)

You're a dick, but with one saving grace, you brought up that clip. "And if you tell that to young people today, they won't believe you".

But on topic, I remember reading that in some places, kids bringing their own lunch to school was against the rules. Who the fuck are they to make a rule like that ? They want a captive market for their inferior cafeteria food that even public employees wouldn't eat ? Sugar and salt laden shit that is almost as unhealthy as fast food ? Dull, boring salads with dull boring dressing ? Welsh rarebit which is nothig more than toast and melted cheese ? (at least here) I little few ounces of 2 % skin milk when they need a big glass of whole milk for the nutrients ? Overcooked everything. Even if it is only two bucks a meal they are making money.

Some schools used to have good cafeterias, you picked and chose what you wanted. And back then, people had money because there were jobs so your Parents gave you that few bucks every day.

I don't even know why Parents send their kids to school these days. They have become indoctrination centers. I remember a story about a young girl who got convinced by the school to turn her Parents in for smoking pot. She was bawling out when they came and arrested them and put her in foster care. And you know what ? I said, and I still mean it, in this country they will try to make you jump through hoops to get your kids back, I would have told them to keep her forever. Betray your own family ? Well then what does the family do ? Let you rot.

Schools in this country are a piece of shit, and it really doesn't matter because there are no jobs. I fact if you want to make a good living go to trade school, not college or university. Be a plumber. They make more than engineers and most lawyers here. Be a bricklayer if you are ph7sically capable. It is a very demanding job and you learn a bunch of shit during your apprenticeship. That is the purpose of trade unions. Labor unions are just gangs extorting money from the company and protecting the incompetent. This does not happen in the trade unions. In a trade union if you do not pass the courses and tests, you make less money, you never get your jouneymans card.

Anyway, later in life I stopped eating lunch because eating made me sleepy, and I did not need that at work. Kids could adapt to that. I know it would be harder for them but I am sure it can be done. In fact when Michell Obama fucked with the school lunch program some of them did skip lunch, bitching that her "healthy" foods taste like cardboard. Like a Domino's pizza, throw the pizza out and eat the box. You are lucky not to have that chain there. I can't believe people actually eat that shit. We got a GOOD pizza place that delivers here.

The other thing is that peole do not know what to eat here. You might have a nutritionalist, changed names to nutritionist a few years ago, who go by the FDA food pyramid. It has a stress on high carb shit, which is making people fat.

When you eat fat it does not necessarily just turn into fat on your body. Some does of course, but what mainly makes the fat is the carbs. If you don't somehow use up the energy in those carbs they are stored in your body as fat. What's more, overweight people are malnourished. The reason they can't seem to feel full with a normal amount of food is because the body did not get what it needs from the food they ate. The body calls out for more input and people do not have a clue what they need. I researched this for many years, decades even and I AM the resource. Sources from all over the world, with a but more weight given to information from countries where people do not get rich and take your house when you get sick, unlike the US.

What I have gleaned is that people are mineral deficient. With the proper intake your body can make every vitamin you need except C, but then people up in the Arctic apparently can. The only way for them to get vitamin C would be to eat whale skin, and it would have to be raw because heat destroys C. I kinda doubt they're doing that. But modern political correctness say we are all the same under the skin, which is total bullshit. A thousand years from now from your remains they can tell whether your Mother was from the east side or the west side of the hill. In fact there is a website now, you give them a DNA sample and they trace your lineage. All the same under the skin ? Bullshit.

A doctor Diamino or something like that purported that people with different blood type should eat differently. Well I happen to know that you cannot feed all the people of this world the same food. The islanders, give them a hamburger and they get sick. You can't feed a Japanese the same food as a Swede for example. There is a difference in body chemistry. What I would like to see is data on the different blood types based on race. It might not prove causation, but at least it would be a correlation.

That doctor also had a few things to say about iridology, which was dismissed as quackery, but lo and behold many years later the established medical industry is looking into it. Remember accupuncture ? That was dismissed as quackery as well but they discovered that is actually works.

So they are telling us wrong what to eat because they don't know. On top of that, we don't listen anyway. And if they force school lunches down the student's throats, they can never serve pork because some Muslims and Jews do go to public schools. They also can't serve beef with cow's milk. Everything has to be Kosher and Halai.

All they seem to do anymore is to take away options. It is as if life is becoming like a software "upgrade". Every fucking time I upgraded anything I lost features and options.

T^T

Yep.

First of all, anybody can say they're a "nutritionist." There's no credentialing involved, just print up some business cards and hang a plaque outside and you're all set. So I would never defer to one. A Registered Dietitian is required to keep up with professional development after their degree to maintain their credentials, so an R.D. would be my choice, if I had to see someone. BUT, they are taught nutrition according to how it's recommended by our government - carbs and dairy and shit.

Thankfully, the tide is beginning to turn. In fact, I changed doctors because my doctor of many years was not interested in how nutrition could heal the body, so I searched specifically for a doctor of functional medicine. And R.D's are beginning to become disillusioned with their schooling. I know a rogue R.D. - it's very unsettling to see her and her peers talk about what they've learned in their (recent) training versus what the actual science shows.

First of all, if you are just an Employee, and you are following instructions of whoever owns that school to deny Food to kids who have no money, then it's not your fault, you are just doing your job. But no matter what, this is directive from who-ever the leader of the school is! And those people need to be punished!

You know, I don't know how US Cafeteria Works. I only see it in movies, and it looks like kids don't have choices. It's not like Singapore School Cafeteria where you have every cuisine available for you, I mean Japanese, Korean, Chinese, American, Italian, Thai, etc etc. The choices are huge. And each stall runs individually. So kids can choose which cuisine they want to buy food from each time. And if a kid keeps borrowing money from a teacher to buy food, the teacher will ring up the parents and find out what is going on, why the kid always have no lunch money? And if the parents say they got financial difficulty. Then these kids will be hooked up with an organization who takes care of giving these poorer kids pocket money.

But if US Cafeteria just serve standard food for everyone. They SHOULD price it into their school fees. That will solve this problem.

Because end of the day, I don't understand why teachers don't get involve and notice the kids who owe lunch money and instead of penalizing them, why not just ring up the parents and ask for the money?
