WASHINGTON ― Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to serve as special prosecutor overseeing the investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

In a statement, Rosenstein stressed that his decision “is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted.” But he said he’d determined “based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.”

In an order dated May 17, Rosenstein wrote Mueller, as special counsel, will conduct an investigation into “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” along with “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”

Trump in deeper doo doo.

Actually, the investigation will take years because that will benefit the republican 2018 election and he'll then find no evidence of crime. Just in time for Trump's reelection so he can gloat on the stump.

Why do you assume Trump's in doo doo? Just because he's not your politician?

Of course it is because he believes that a accusation against Trump is proof.
A They haven't proven Russian influence in the election.
B They have nomactual evidence agaist Trump.

It should also be noted that if what the Russian may have done is a crime then Obama's involvement in both the French and particularly the Israeli election are. If you want to investigate Trump he must want Obama put away.

You folks do not read with much discrimination, do you. And tamaka just a few days ago you agreed that we should cut back on ad hom attacks and then you have proceeded to make the most vile accusations, really disgusting stuff, some of the worst I have seen in these threads. I had brighter hopes for your civility. Tut, tut.

It may very well be that Trump will slide past all this nasty business. My beef with Trump has to do with his social and political policies. That he is an ignorant, muddleheaded, self-absorbed cry baby is not my concern. It is my concern that the checks and balances are working. Mr. Trump should take heed to pause and realize he was not elected Emperor.

seekingOwnertoo -> RE: SPECIAL PROSECUTOR APPOINTED (5/17/2017 5:51:21 PM)

I am taking this to mean that an Independent, Qualified Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate. The reason being it is the only way people can agree on the findings.

Jack Welsh said today that Trump has made some really rookie mistakes. My take on this asks if these rookie mistakes are a criminal offense or Trump stupidity? That is why a Special Prosecutor is needed.

THe only part I may have a problem with is that I thought I saw a 60 day limit placed on the investigation. Likely it is going to take until October 2018 ... [:D]

The 60 day is a requirement for Mr. Mueller to file his first report with the Acting Director.

Yes you disagree with him, this makes you inclined to believe any accusation against him.
There is not one tenth the evidence against him there was against Hillary on the e-mails.
And Obama made no bones about sending his campaign team to get envolved in the last Israeli election. Why would anyone who wants a special prosecutor for this not be screaming for Obama's inprisonment, good for the goose, good for the gander. Not only that but there is proven evidence of Hillary working with the Russians. The only reason anyone cares is that they haven't gotten over losing the election.

The Dems are demanding Trumps empeachment , it must be Wendsday.

Normally I would tend to agree with this assessment....

However,

In February President Trump tried to get Comey to stop the investigation into Flynn and the Russians.
Among the reasons for firing Comey that came out after the memo, the Flynn investigation and the Russian thing were mentioned.
The one man that should have had zero to say about Comey being fired, Sessions, had recused himself and turned over operations to the assistant AG, but was consulted about firing Comey.

Of course, the assistant AG saying some month's ago he would not step in unless it appeared that there were efforts to hamper the investigation gets wind that President Trump tried to shut down the investigation and suddenly a special prosecutor is appointed?

Of course, there is one curious thing, a top GOP hardliner made the statement that he knows Flynn well enough to know the man is a stand up guy, he wont lie to save his own skin, and everyone that knows Flynn agrees or seems to agree on this.

His next statement on cnn tonight was most telling, and considering he was involved in the Iran Contra special prosecutors investigation, makes me wonder, "He might have been used."

When asked what he meant, his answer was simple, "He might have been doing what he was told to do."

Now, if this is the case, and there turns out to be some serious wrong doing and illegal activities, even if President Trump was not involved, the President is going down with all the people who were involved, simply because his actions since the election are screaming cover up.

And I said this months ago on this board.

No administration has had this many screw ups and had to do this much damage control in all my memory. It is almost as if the GOP got him nominated simply because he could beat Hillary and no one else could.

If he goes down, that leaves his VP in the driver's seat, a man that is far more qualified to hold the office than Trump, but could not have beaten Hillary.

And when you have Erick Erickson saying Trump may have messed up with the release of the intelligence to the Russians and it may be worse than any of us know, a man who sang Trump's praises throughout the campaign, it begins to look like the GOP is going to throw Trump under the bus, the train and off a pier with cement loafers.

Thank you for taking the time to go through it all, Jeff. There is more. Reporting tonight . . Flynn told the transition committee he was under investigation but Trump appointed him anyway. And the VP, the head of the transition committee, claims he didn't know Flynn was being investigated. But, I suspect this will all pale when the Special Counsel starts looking at the financial records

The partisans on this forum will never accept, however, that we face a Constitutional crisis due to the president's hubris. [hubris is not a sex organ, tamaka]

WickedsDesire -> RE: SPECIAL PROSECUTOR APPOINTED (5/17/2017 10:45:47 PM)

Its not like the whiny baby plays the victim card eh boscox and friends. No siree

As President Trump addressed 195 cadets as they graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, he offered them some advice.

“Over the course of your life, you will find that things are not always fair,” the unsmiling president said, leaning heavily on the lectern with his shoulders scrunched up. “You will find that things happen to you that you do not deserve and that are not always warranted. But you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight. Never, ever, ever give up.”

And in case the cadets wondered if this was really advice for them — or simply a coded defense of himself — the president then made his intentions clear.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” the president said, opening his arms wide, as if inviting a much-needed hug. “No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly. You can’t let them get you down. You can’t let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams.”

It was then that the president received a warm round of applause, the sort that started as he was still speaking rather than as he awkwardly waited for it. And it wasn’t just applause — there were also cheers and shouts of encouragement. In that moment, the embattled president — the one accused of firing the FBI director for political reasons, trying to interfere in a criminal investigation and spilling sensitive intelligence to the Russians — seemed to get a burst of energy. He was reminded that despite the alarming headlines, the scolding from editorial boards and fellow Republicans, the calls for impeachment, the falling poll numbers and the bitter finger-pointing within his White House, there were still supporters out there who agreed that he is really the victim here — that everything has been more difficult for him, that he is right to keep defending himself and fighting.

The president marveled at the applause. “I guess that’s why I won — thank you,” he said. “I guess that’s why we won.”
