ORIGINAL: Greta75 I gotta say, I love the current Philippino President though. He does not back down from Terrorists. He is going all out war with them to eradicate them. Those damn Islamic Terrorist in Philippines has been allowed to kidnap and behead too many European Tourists already! Now they even beheaded a Police Chief. Those guys seriously need to be put down. I know you like hardmen who talk tough Greta, but I don't really think you understand the history here. Duterte's hands were already steeped in the blood of the illegal killings of countless people before he even came into to office. The guy is a butcher and a thug, who has allowed local officials and vigilantes to kill journalists, political opponents and business rivals. Personally I think those are the smear campaign by the corrupt politicians who are receiving big fat bribes from the Triads in Philippines for them to do their drug trade in peace, that Duterte is trying to shut down. I think Duterte war on drugs is fantastic and his hardline methods was really effective in reducing the drug situation in the state he was Mayor in. And now he is bringing it country wide. He is gonna weed out all the corruption in his country. The support that Duterte has on the ground in Philippines and the margin he won his election in speak far more volumes from people who actually see the genuine purpose of his work, than all these smear alleged allegations that you are making about him here. You just have no idea how corrupt Philippines political arena is. And tough actions needs to be taken to take out these guys who are homey with the triads. Countries like Malaysia/Philippines/Indonesia. Their culture is, everybody takes bribe. Even airport customs in Indonesia, one time I went in with my passport less than 6 months and an airport officer told me if I paid him X amount of money, he'll let me into the country and close one eye about my passport. Of course I chose to fly back into Singapore, or else coming back might be another issue, might be seen as illegal entry. That's how crazy the corruption is at every level. In Malaysia, I can bribe police officers for anything I want. And usually if they do stop you, you simply bribe them to let you go. The PM of Malaysia got 680million dollars deposited into his private account by Saudi Arabian government. Into his PRIVATE personal account. I'd love to see how Trump can get away with that, if that happened. The PM of Malaysia was cleared of that, citing it was a genuine personal gift. Not a bribe. Har har har. The PM said it was a personal Gift. I wonder how the US media will melt down if it was Trump who received multi-millions in "personal gifts" from Saudi. And I grew up with my Filipino maids who raised me and they told me when election time comes. The candidates go door to door to visit, but they bring cash. So they give you cash in hand as a gift, hoping you will vote for them. And if you vote for them, they promise each voter more cash incentive. That's Philippines. You know in Singapore, our candidates go door to door and visit each household during elections too but never once were we even offered any gifts or anything. Just to say hi and listen to our concerns. They need a hardcore duterte who refuse to be bribed by anybody and call everyone out for their corruption! I have every idea of how corrupt the Philippines is Greta. I used to live in the Philippines and knew journalists whose colleagues Duterte had killed. Disagreeing with me is fine but don't suggest that I know nothing about the Pilipinas and say you do because you had Filippino maids. You tried to suggest before in other threads that I know nothing about South East Asia. Sure I wasn't born there but I don't have to just read about this stuff online. I have said this in previous responses to your posts, but I wonder if you bothered to read them properly. You missed out the part of my post where I said that "people were frightened to go to Davao as much because of the Police and vigilantes as the crime and armed opposition in Mindanao". That's not something I read about, it was my experience and the experience of people I knew. If you went to Davao you couldn't oil someone's palm with a small bribe you needed really big money behind you to be sure you could deal with Duterte's police as well as guns to deal with the rebel groups he was supposed to be dealing with away from the city. That didn't just apply to foreigners but also Filipinos who weren't related to one of Duterte's friends. Duterte is the very embodiment of corruption. Even the Manila Times, the frightened mouse of Philippines journalism, roundly condemned the lawlessness and violent vigilantism he created and the deaths of journalists, human rights activists, business and political opponents at his hands. I haven't checked in the last couple of years but I bet they haven't dared say anything about him recently. By the way Duterte also did deals with some warlike and violent Muslim groups MNLF and the MILF (who want to establish an Islamic State within the Philippines). The MILF, MNLF and the NPA were all offered a ceasefire last Christmas, despite their record of terrorist killings, but this was not extended to all groups. Easy to understand when you know that some of Duterte's family were members of the MNLF and the MILF. At the same time he has blamed the West for Islamic extremism and terrorism. It is difficult to see his war on terror as being anything other than going to war with those Muslim separatists he is not related to. If you liked him because he is anti-Muslim, like you, then you are a long way from the truth. For my part, the only way to end the Moro conflict is negotiation and giving the region autonomy without allowing them to implement Islamic Law. You may like his strong words on foreign relations, drugs and terrorism, but Duterte is a violent warlord, promoting his family and business associates through murder and corruption. He is causing more violence and corruption than he is solving. Evidently it isn't corruption when it is your friends and it isn't murder if you are Mayor or President and someone else pulls the trigger.
