Real0ne is correct % GDP the Americans spend the most on health care than any other nation on Earth by a long margin. But it is easy enough no to know that fact given the sheer state of theirs and all those RWNJ screaming mwaaaah obama, poor people etc Just all the money is siphoned off by interested parties - never to be confused with-by patients. The State of Ohio has 88 Counties, and all legal Ohio residents are subject to the tax rates of Ohio. Then, there is the Federal Government, and all legal residents of the USA are subject to the same Federal tax rates. Each State gets to set it's own rax rates. Each County gets to set it's own tax rates. Each local government level gets to set it's own tax rates. That's how you get different tax rates by geography.

If they don't want to pay taxes, they can go elsewhere, but someone else will eat their lunch. Corporations are legendary tax avoiders - which is why California is in debt.

The tax problem is that revenue are to tied to wall street and the govt. is as we type figuring new ways to tackle that problem which is either boom or bust. Cailf. has turned a huge debt into a small surplus. Unemployment is down to 4.9%. HERE The Calif. population continues to grow now at over 39 Million projected to soon surpass 40 million. 17th fastest in growth in the US. HERE

~FR~ Belgium has got single payer health care (which hands down beats both Canada's and the UK's btw). Belgium pays 10.2% of the GDP to have their health care system. The USA currently spends about 16.8% of the GDP on health care for a system that sucks ass. Belgium pays about $4500 per capita per year. The USA (as noted above) pays about $9000 a year. It's possible to have a world class health care system at about half the budget the USA is currently spending on health care, but in order to do that, you need to decrease overhead. My GP in America has 2 full time nurses on staff, a secretary, and a filing/administrative person. When I see him, I see a nurse for about 10-15 minutes, and I'm lucky if I get to see the doctor for more than 10. At the same time, I'm never in and out of there in less than 2 hours, because they make me wait for every for everything, even if I'm on time. The reason is because the doc needs to cram in as many patients as possible in a day to make his overhead work. And he needs that huge overhead because there's TONS off paperwork involved with seeing patients, and dealing with insurance companies. In Belgium, my parents see a GP who's part of a group practice. For 9 doctors, they've got 1 nurse, and 1 secretary who also does all the paperwork. The doctor is the one who gets the patient out of the waiting room, takes their blood pressure, and asks what's wrong. You only see the nurse if the doctor needs assistance on something. My GP I was with in Belgium worked alone, and has no nurse of secretary in hire. He does his own paperwork in about half an hour every night. He again takes books 30 minutes to see each patient. So yeah... if you go see a doctor and you need to cover the wages of 5 people during that time it's going to be much more expensive than if you need to cover the wages of 1 person during your office visit. Affordable health care is possible. You just need a LOT less overhead than they have in America to make it happen.

Single payer is especially shocking for older people here. For example, my dad worked and my mom stayed home so she was always 'on' his insurance policy. When they retired, that is no longer the case. They each have their own separate Medicare policy and that really bothered my dad for a while because they are like 2 separate people (policy-wise) instead of being 'a married couple' sharing the same health insurance policy.

Coming from Canada... 4 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. Tests, dialysis, work ups, assessments, and finally a transplant. Post transplant I had 7 days in a critical care unit, monitored 24 hours a day. Then I had post op clinical visits, 2 more stints in the hospital due to a virus that causes 10% of kidney transplant patients to lose them, and an additional procedure. I went to clinic as much as 2x a week. Now, thank goodness it is down to every 6 months, as the hospital where the clinic is, is a 2.5 hour drive each way. I have no clue what that would have cost me in the US, but with Canada's healthcare system, I walked out of the hospital not owing a nickel
