ORIGINAL: Dvr22999874 an excellent book and a great movie that really had little to do with Britain. In fact, I don't think Britain was mentioned once in it, was it ? It was basically about the way nazi Germany was going at that time I believe Published after the war (1949 about Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain) and the fall of the Nazis but I think a look at a possible future from the extreme right police state in a world of perpetual war. That gave it a right wing bent as Mussolini would have had it. About the Superstate of omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. I always thought it was more a critique of Stalin. It is, just like the other Orwell novel anybody's read. It's probably a difficult concept for the OP to grasp, but a lot of lefties were horrified by what the Soviet Union turned into under Stalin. No, see... as well as Sharia law, all lefties want either Stalin, Mao or the current situation in Venezuela. European Social Democracy isn't part of the conversation because it's cheating to talk about it. The first time a bunch of British lefty intellectuals were invited to China post cultural revolution they villified what Mao had done to the country, as a matter of fact. You can't expect somebody who thinks that Germaine Greer speaks for the whole of the left to know that, though.
