To listen to the British tell it you would think that 1984 was a brillant vision of the future.
You are safe because big brother watches your every move.
You are safe because there is a cop on every corner.
You are safe because we, not you are responsible for your well being.
You are safe because big brother is watching out for you.

Maybe we get a bad sampleing of British opinion, but the majority of those we have on here seem to think that way.

You need to actually read this book.

It's abit ironic.

You are safe because big brother watches your every move.
You are safe because there is a cop on every corner.
You are safe because we, not you are responsible for your well being.
You are safe because big brother is watching out for you.

Sounds like Singapore ha! I do feel rather safe here and have blind trust of the police, but police here are seriously very nice and friendly here, part of their job is to be polite and friendly when dealing with people, and not to use aggression but diplomacy. But the big issue, back to:

Good Dictator that genuinely from the bottom of their heart does everything putting country first above himself.

OR

Evil Dictator that want to control people for his own benefit.

Could be two very different out comes. It's a lucky draw. We were lucky.

But 1984 was a book I never read because, my brother told me the gist of the story. They made two people who are madly inlove betray each other. Awful stuffs!

Oh and I'm for cameras everywhere, because lately, so many crimes committed, they were able to get street camera images to basically see what happened. Clear video evidence. It was great.

an excellent book and a great movie that really had little to do with Britain. In fact, I don't think Britain was mentioned once in it, was it ? It was basically about the way nazi Germany was going at that time I believe

Ya but it has romantic unhappy ending. So anything with unhappy endings will not be a great book to read for me. Same with movies. Unhappy Endings, count me out ha!

I think my brother was 13 when he read it, and it made very very cynical about love.

This George Orwell dude always write depressing stories.

Published after the war (1949 about Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain) and the fall of the Nazis but I think a look at a possible future from the extreme right police state in a world of perpetual war.

That gave it a right wing bent as Mussolini would have had it. About the Superstate of omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation.

I think I was about the same age. I just thought it was a mighty story. It seems to be gradually happening in a lot of places around the world now. And if the Nazis had won WW2, it would have happened a lot of years ago too

My apologies. For some reason, I thought it was published in the 30's. Wrong again *smile*

Atlas Shrugged is seriously bad and doesn't belong with the others at all.

It is, just like the other Orwell novel anybody's read. It's probably a difficult concept for the OP to grasp, but a lot of lefties were horrified by what the Soviet Union turned into under Stalin.

No, see... as well as Sharia law, all lefties want either Stalin, Mao or the current situation in Venezuela.
European Social Democracy isn't part of the conversation because it's cheating to talk about it.

The first time a bunch of British lefty intellectuals were invited to China post cultural revolution they villified what Mao had done to the country, as a matter of fact.
You can't expect somebody who thinks that Germaine Greer speaks for the whole of the left to know that, though.
