District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine and Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh announced their lawsuit Monday against the president Monday. Watch their statements in the player above.

WASHINGTON — The attorneys generals of Maryland and the District of Columbia have announced they’ve filed suit against President Donald Trump, alleging he violated the Constitution by retaining ties to a sprawling global business empire.

District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine and Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh made the announcement at a jointly held news conference in Washington, confirming the suit has been filed in a court in Maryland. Frosh and Racine cited Trump’s leases, properties and other business “entanglements” around the world as the reason for the suit, saying those posed a conflict of interest under a clause of the Constitution.

“The presidents’ conflicts of interest threaten our democracy,” Frosh told journalists. “We cannot treat the president’s ongoing violations of the Constitution and his disregard of the rights of the American people as the new acceptable status quo.”

Racine says the president has spoken about drawing a line between the presidency and his many businesses and properties but that he “has walked his promise back.”

“We have a duty to enforce the law and that’s why we are taking action today,” Racine added.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday. The president called an earlier, similar lawsuit about the so-called emoluments clause of the Constitution an issue “without merit, totally without merit.”

Oh, the response to this one will be fun, Lucy.
I'll just get a stiff drink, settle back and wait for the fun to start...

He's already under a pile of lawsuits. Just one more to add to the pack.

So what happens if somehow they win this case?

WhoreMods -> RE: Maryland and DC AG Announce their lawsuit against Trump (6/12/2017 12:28:44 PM)

Is there a legal precedent for suing the president already?
I thought the prior 44 had managed to dodge that one.

Paula Jones. So that John Thomas has been run up the old pole.

Those were suits regarding policy. Trump has had (and lost) those too already (like his Muslim ban that he said wasn't a Muslim ban except that he had already called it that).

No, I don't think so.

There's considerable evidence to justify alleging Trump is using his position as president to profit himself, calling into question whether he serves the country's interests or his own.

Further, the emoluments clause was added to the Constitution to convince Maryland to support it, so that Maryland is bring the suit is significant. Constitutionally, this is two sovereign leaders challenging another. They have much stronger standing than earlier watchdog complaints.

The Justice Dept. is likely to take wherever it gets to the Supreme Court in the end.

FR

How much more mud will it take before any of it actually sticks?

Musicmystery -> RE: Maryland and DC AG Announce their lawsuit against Trump (6/12/2017 2:01:30 PM)

It will take the 2018 elections. Until then, he could shoot a citizen a day in cold blood on television and incur no Republican criticism.

He ain't up for election in 2018, that liberal math failing again ? However about a half dozen democrats might lose their seats.

If/when that happens are you going to the cry-in ?

T^T

They're firing all of their guns at once, though voters never remember that long. Outside of the alt left circle jerk people are tired of the cry-in hate fest hysterics and have tuned it out best they can

Time to take your meds. The post is talking about the GOP support in Congress, which 2018 could change (though that's in doubt of course).

Now fuck off.

Termyn8or -> RE: Maryland and DC AG Announce their lawsuit against Trump (6/12/2017 8:06:15 PM)

Well if they show up here I will give them something to cry about.

Term, when is the last time you saw a congresscritter who didn't basically start running for reelection as soon as they were sworn in for their existing term?

http://www.collarchat.com/m_5042770/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#5042773 ignore that thread - but extracts

In all, the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland names 10 countries it says Trump has profited from as president.

Andy Grewal, a law professor at the University of Iowa, has been openly skeptical that any emolument lawsuit will succeed. But Grewal said he thinks having the District and Maryland as plaintiffs will make federal courts reluctant to halt the suit before it reaches the phase of discovery that could lead to Trump’s tax returns. guffaws
