As tribal as humans are, I suggest that individuals desire to be accepted by those around them. However, biological and environmental factors can lead a person to feel isolated (perhaps even wronged), and further surmise that violence is the only path open for personal redemption. These persons are drawn to ideologies that fill such a need; whether it is religious, political or a hybrid is irrelevant. The building and maintenance of a strong community that has its foundation in solid, shared ethics would minimize violence.

I further agree that terrorism is very much a politically-changed word, and what we are truly discussing is exceptional instances of violence arising from pathological factors.
