A Minnesota police officer who shot dead a black man during a traffic stop has been found not guilty.
Jeronimo Yanez fatally wounded Philando Castile after he stopped his car in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, in July 2016.

Mr Castile's dying moments were caught on camera by his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, who live-streamed the aftermath on Facebook.

Speaking on Friday, his mother Valerie said the verdict proved "the system continues to fail black people".

The case - one of a series of deaths of black men and boys at the hands of US police - prompted widespread outrage and protests in St Paul.

Ms Reynolds' video, which showed him covered in blood as an officer pointed his gun at him, was viewed by millions around the world.

She said afterwards her boyfriend had been reaching for his licence when he was shot by the policeman.
Officer Yanez, 29, was charged with second-degree manslaughter in November

It was the first time a police officer had been charged with the death of a citizen in Minnesota, according to Judge Glenda Hatchett, who represented Mr Castile's family.

Officer Yanez told the court he was afraid for his life and said Mr Castile did not follow his orders - but prosecutors argued Mr Castile was courteous and non-threatening.

After 30 hours of deliberation on Friday, he was cleared of second-degree manslaughter and two felony counts of intentional discharge of a dangerous weapon for endangering the safety of Ms Reynolds and her daughter, four.

Valerie Castile told reporters outside the courthouse: "I'm mad as hell right now. Yes, I am.
"The system continues to fail black people."

She added: "I am so disappointed in the state of Minnesota. My son loved this state, my son loved this city and this city killed my son."

But Earl Gray, who was representing officer Yanez, told Reuters news agency "justice was done".
"We're very happy," he said. "Yanez was innocent. He was just doing his job."

However, Officer Yanez will not be returning to work for the City of St Anthony police department.
A statement on the city's website said it had "concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city".

1155 civilians were killed by police gunfire,

13 officers were brought to trial.

zero convictions

Why is that so?

The police are doing their job quite well, by rules as given. I think that was Vincent's point.

Former police officer Michael Slager is doing time for putting 5 bullets into the back of a black guy running away from him, the latter being apparently not fast enough, contrary to stereotype.

Gotta keep up, here.

Status: offline 		In my opinion there is little doubt that with close to 1,000,000 law enforcement officers you are going to have a few bad apples and bad training. To me it is amazing how few there are considering the pressures and temptations of the job.

In most of the cases of police misconduct there is most often a common theme... failure to follow simple orders. As in this case... if the man had just followed orders and not reached for his weapon when told not to he would be alive today. It makes no difference if he was reaching for his licence or a weapon the police officer told him to stop and he did not do it. We all know the pressures the police have been under the last few years. Social unrest for valid reasons, or at least thinking valid reasons, have spilled over into violence against police. They are often blamed for social ills outside of their control. This officer should not have been given a badge if he could not control his fear. I believe, and the jury did as well, that he feared for his life and shot when the victim ignored his commands and reached for what the officer thought was a weapon. He should not be allowed to continue his carrier as a police officer but the verdict is correct. I also think, just an opinion, that the family of the victim should be compensated by the city. Someone with that much fear should not have been given a badge and the City bears some responsibility for his actions.

Just think back to the recent high profile cases... take Ferguson for instance. The boy was given commands to stop on multiple occasions... all testified to by eye witnesses. Instead he charges an armed police officer, whom he had already tried to get his gun, and was shot. Of course it could have and should have been handled differently but the refusal to prosecute was the right one.

I am far from saying there are no racists or murderers among police officers but most of the cases causing unrest in the last few years were people refusing to follow orders you and I would follow and should follow.

Of course you didn't pay attention to this, but among other things there is the fact tat when the gf started he "taping" of the incident (which didn't start until the shooting was over) the cop was saying I told him not to do that, in fact he also said that repeatedly. But no dead cop, no reason to shoot.

Even if you are right how many times does a cop who knows you are armed have to tell you not to reach for sometning he can't see?
I tell a cop I am armed, with a permit and my hands don't move from the steering wheel without directions from him. In otherwords zero. We have a case of terminal stupidity.

Status: offline 		The police dash cam showed that the officer told him not to reach for anything THREE TIMES I think that counts as repeated particularly when the number needed should have been ZERO.

Guess I am not making stuff up!!!!!

Status: offline 		yeah, in less than a second, I dont call that repeatedly. And he was talking about the gun. He told the guy to get his license. I call that one guilty son of a bitch. At least he wont be working as a cop. anywhere. The civil suit is gonna break em. We dont need more bad cops.
