FR

Hang on, has there been an email campaign inviting selected people to a 'Nitwits' Pride' march, or something?
You're carrying the flag in this march, surely.

There is something to be said for real and genuine and honorable, even if one doesn't always agree
There is, but there is no-one in the Republican party to whom those appellations could be applied.

Umm, no. They went to jail for it mostly.

OK. I was trying to be all serious and stuff. [8D]

Then, I thought about it, and realized you're right.

The majority of my Leather Elders have spent the night in jail. Mostly for crap like demonstrating, congregating...

They did that stuff, so I wouldn't have to. The Next Generation probably won't have to, either.

Why do we still march at Pride???

Because we have to.

I agree with the need to march.

But not as confident about the freedom of the next generation as you are.

Hearing the faint sounds of marching boots of fascism.

Could be. But I also made it clear that I did not write that there are no gay Republicans or conservatives, and rather than seeking clarification he played the troll game

Well, of course there are gay republicans and conservatives. However, they are all hiding in a toilet booth in Minneapolis International Airport.

The problem is, Bosco, right from the gitgo you politicized the issue. You did, yes you, no one else. You just couldn't resist. You made such a warm humane observation and then you pissed all over it. [:'(]

News flash vincent

This is the section set aside for things to get all kinds of politicized all of the time.

Surprising, isn't it

I know, I know . . . . it was Obama [8|]

Russia.
You're a fucking idiot. Russia is an instance of the finest in atheist tradition - the persecution of religious people for their beliefs.

Socialists and communists are atheist by fucking definition - you ill-informed bigot.

Can't you afford newspapers or television? Are you such a cheap-ass cretin? But of course. I shouldn't have to ask. News for you, asshole, the Soviet era is over. Haven't you noticed we have a new enemy for you to pee in your pants over. Communists? You still hearing voices in your little brain? [sm=happy-smiley58.gif]

This is my weapon
This is my gun
The first for killing
The other for fun. [:D]

I know most folks aren't used to it. I'm trying to be positive. [:)]

I hope that we (and I do believe the proper term is we) don't lose the ground that's been gained. I know it's one of the possibilities that exists, so that potential is out there. I hope we won't regress.

I don't see how we could regress. I mean, it's not like homosexual behavior poses any kind of public health threat or anything.

You can always regress, and refusing to believe that it's possible makes it a lot easier for those who want to wind the clock back a few decades to do so.

Yes well, those people are becoming less and less. Most people have at least one loved one who is bi or gay and once it affects your loved ones, you tend to become more open-minded.

I'm not usually given to a rosy outlook on the future, LP, so my friends tell me; yet, my feeling is that the the USA isn't at the beginning of a regressive march so much as toying with a bit of regression for a while before returning to 'boring old sanity'. The same goes for things this side of the pond: there's been a surge of nostalgic support for nutty old views re a range of things, from race through to religiosity, but it won't last. Reality finally hits and it eventually impacts on the brains of even the dimmest and most swivel-eyed right wing loons that the reason we ditched certain attitudes a long while ago was because they were, basically, shite.

Seriously - all irony aside - I think people, en masse, get tired of the pressure of being sensible, balanced and intelligent, every now and again. That's what's at the root of it. We're seeing the phenomenon in the USA, and all over Europe. But it's a temporary thing - a bit of a relaxation, that's all.

I do disagree. As a general rule people who tend toward an authoritarian mindset are fearful of groups who are not like them and are easily persuaded to banishing or destroying what they fear under the guise of moral or patriotic correctness. History is well populated with witch slayers. In my opinion the liberty enjoyed by the odd lot these past several decades is an anomaly which will be severely pressed. The push back is well underway on abortion rights and civil rights. Abortion clinics are scarce and voting booths are being limited of late. The poor, the weak, and the sick be damned.

tweakabelle -> RE: PRIDE (7/1/2017 5:23:55 AM)

It seems clear that A'ness isn't aware of the privileged position of the Orthodox Church in Putin's Russia. This 'news' is only about two decades old:

"And while much attention has been paid to the growing authoritarianism of the Kremlin and on the support for Putin's regime on the part of the Russian oligarchs whom Putin has enriched through his crony capitalism, little has been paid to the equally critical role of the Russian Orthodox Church in helping to shape Russia's current system, and in supporting Putin's regime and publicly conflating the mission of the Russian state under Vladimir Putin's leadership with the mission of the Church. Putin's move in close coordination with the Russian Orthodox Church to sacralize the Russian national identity has been a key factor shaping the increasingly authoritarian bent of the Russian government under Putin, and strengthening his public support, and must be understood in order to understand Russia's international behavior.

The close relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the Russian state based upon a shared, theologically-informed vision of Russian exceptionalism is not a new phenomenon. During the days of the Czar, the Russian ruler was seen as God's chosen ruler of a Russian nation tasked with representing a unique set of value embodied by Russian Orthodoxy, and was revered as “the Holy Orthodox Czar”. Today, a not dissimilar vision of Russian exceptionalism is once again shared by the ROC and the Kremlin, and many Russians are beginning to see Vladimir Putin in a similar vein – a perception encouraged both by Putin and by the Church, each of which sees the other as a valuable political ally and sees their respective missions as being interrelated.

Funny but that part in bold sounds an awful lot like the campus protest groups against anything from conservative groups to Christian groups to speakers from the right appearing on "their" campus...a lot like ANTIFA...a lot like those Sorts-funded protestors who violently assault those who speak against what the left says is "correct".

I was thinking the exact same thing and have said it before---the only totalitarian-like behavior I see these days comes from the comrades.

the "marching boots of fascism??"

voting booths being limited??

scarce abortion clinics? (the incredible irony lost on them there no doubt)

do you ever look the left and wonder what the heck are they looking at such that they can say things like what you responded to?
