tamaka -> Delta pleads with customers to help defend US jobs (6/30/2017 10:06:52 PM)

I was on a flight recently and saw this ad in the Delta Sky magazine. I haven't heard about any of this on the news, so i thought it was strange. Was wondering if anyone here heard of it or knew anything about it.

Delta Ad  in 2017 edition of Delta's 'Sky' Magazine:

HELP US DEFEND U.S. JOBS

The nations of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are attempting to take over international aviation by funneling billions of dollars in subsidies into their state-owned airlines.  U.S. airlines have already ceased flying to certain international destinations because they can't compete with the unreasonably low prices of the gulf airlines.  And for every route lost, 1,500 Americans lose their jobs.  Left unaddressed, the U.S  aviation industry is at risk.

Open skies agreements exist to prevent this, but they are not being enforced.  Join the fight to protect fair trade and American jobs.

Sure thats why we have lost the trade war with china. China subsidizes all their shipping. They can ship their trash to us for ninety three cents and when we find out its trash and want to return it for credit discover it costs us 150 bucks to return 25 buck item.

Delta and some other US airlines have been trying to lobby Congress on this issue for some time without much luck. Guess they are hoping their customers will pick up the gauntlet and fight for them. Since Congress never did anything to help Boeing compete against state-sponsored Airbus, I doubt Delta will get much out of the effort.

Maybe if Delta promised to stop throwing people who've already been allowed to embark on the flight they've bought a ticket for off the plane, American workers would be more kindly disposed towards the American aviation industry?
(Sounds suspiciously like a "we can't compete with those rotten arabs without some huge government subsidies" argument anyway.)

Yeah, and not just the recent stuff -- airlines haven't exactly positioned themselves on the high moral ground.

One might almost suspect that they're whining because they can't club together and drive the middle eastern airlines out of business the way they did when Freddy Laker (and earlier, Howard Hughes) started undercutting them.

Boing gets no subsidies from the amerikan taxpayer???I think you are mistaken.

Boeing military aircraft are subsidized, not the commercial aircraft they sell to airlines. Airbus is subsidized at both ends of the business.

What if the UAE and Qatar take over the worldwide airline industry? I wonder how much of the American Airline company stocks they own or have the potential to earn/own. Or maybe China is buying the American stock.

If american companies allow it:) then thats down to americans greed

You've lost the point that American companies aren't 'allowing' anything. They are being underpriced by Arab state-owned government entities.

underpriced, ??
where can you pick an arab or chinese carrier from new york to san diego?
Or from atlanta to Toronto? Or the UK, or france?

Greta75 -> RE: Delta pleads with customers to help defend US jobs (7/1/2017 7:57:14 PM)

American Air companies are losing business because of bad service.

It's as simple as that.

Not cheap pricing.

The service quality of Arab Airlines are like beyond anything! You just need to sit in Delta Air and Emirates and make the comparison. You're treated like royalty in Emirates even as just a cattle class.

Most people don't mind paying and they pay for the service. If they don't want service, they would pay for some cheap budget airline. And that's not Qatar or Emirates as those are Premium Airlines.

Delta isn't a budget airline.

It's a lame excuse to blame it on pricing.

FR

I remember the great rejoicing when the airlines were deregulated and free market competition was supplied by Spirit Airlines. Like taking a bus.

Prices fell, the hub system was constructed, leg room got shorter as seats were added. Oh there's more. It all went to hell. The fare cuts were nice.

That's how unregulated free market capitalism works.

BitaTruble -> RE: Delta pleads with customers to help defend US jobs (7/2/2017 7:28:36 AM)

I took Delta on the leg over and will fly again this Wednesday on the way home. Delta service sucks, but I got a great deal on my hotel/flight package here to Scotland. Round trip flight plus a stay of 6 nights at Citizen M and 18 hours at Yotel was $2100.

On the way over, at first drink service on the second leg of my trip from MN to Amsterdam my neighbor spilled his hot coffee on my white dress..burned then cold for the journey over the pond. The "clean up" consisted of the first attendant I asked for some help forgot and the second attendant handed me a couple of blue blankets so "I" could clean up the mess around me. My own blanket..my personal Harry Potter fleece throw got coffee'd as well. When I asked for one additional blanket for myself, I was told there were no more blankets left.

Since all my luggage was checked all the way to scotland and the only extra clothes I had in my carry on was a pair ofjeans and fresh panties in case of accident, i had no blouse to put on so wore the dress to AMS..ran to buy a t-shirt in AMS, changed in the bathroom and then made my connection to Scotland with my jeans and my new (actually kind of cool) t-shirt.

Trip home..full outfit in the carry on. Lesson learned...bring a full change of clothes and be prepared to be ignored or service your own needs on the plane.
