tweakabelle -> Mosul is liberated: IS routed (7/10/2017 8:49:39 AM)

Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi has announced the recapture of Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, from the thugs of IS. The Guardian reports:

"Iraq’s prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, has declared victory over Islamic State forces in Mosul after nearly nine months of bitter fighting to displace the extremist group from the city where it proclaimed its “caliphate”.

Thousands have died, nearly a million residents have fled, and swaths of the city have been reduced to ruins during the gruelling campaign, including the ancient al-Nuri mosque and minaret that were one of its best known landmarks.

Victory in Mosul is still both a strategic and symbolic milestone for Iraqi fighters backed by US-led coalition forces, however, and sparked celebrations across the country, including in Baghdad where proud and relieved Iraqis took to the streets, waving the national flag in exultation.

The city had been the last major urban stronghold Isis held in Iraq, and defeat there pushes the group back towards its insurgent roots, leaving the militants with just a handful of towns and stretches of sparsely populated desert under their control.

Sadly this doesn't mean the end of IS, but is a severe setback for the Islamist thugs. IS's other major city, Raqqa in Syria is also under attack with Kurdish and allied forces securing a bridgehead in the city, which is likely to see a long drawn out urban war to unseat the last remaining citadel of IS's "caliphate". The liberation of Raqqa is only a matter of time as IS faces overwhelming forces arrayed against it, but it took almost 9 months to liberate Mosul.

Even as IS is routed on the battlefield, the Islamist ideology will live on, and we are likely to see an increase in guerilla tactics in Syria/Iraq and suicide attacks in Europe. How then can the vicious Islamist ideology be defeated? Are we doomed to live with IS's atrocities for the foreseeable future?

...and Trump claims credit for it in 5...4...3...2...1...

I was listening to Beck a while ago and, for once, I agree with him totally.
We have defeated IS. Now what?
Will we leave a power vacuum like we usually do and just allow something even worse to arise?
Will we actually act like we give a damn?

What will we do?

It's been in the news for days. Apparently, taking Mosel cost about 40% of the attacking forces. Which, by western military standards makes them now an ineffective military force until they can resupply and regroup. It creates problems because many of the fighters are Kurds, who Turkey considers terrorists. So there are problems besides those tweak mentioned. There will be political considerations from many governments in the area. Iran is sending more armies along the border with Jordan, also creating concerns. It's not going to be as simple as just killing IS fighters.

The Kurds are getting massive military, tactics and strategy, and combat experience, stay tuned for some work on a new country.

Kurdish: The largest ethnic diaspora without a homeland. The US could create a real Kurdistan in reality in no time.

(Iraqi Kurdistan, officially called the Kurdistan Region by the Iraqi constitution, is located in the north of Iraq and constitutes the country's only autonomous region)

Not and keep Turkey as an ally.

mnottertail -> RE: Mosul is liberated: IS routed (7/10/2017 10:48:45 AM)

which is the waltz. We havent in the past looked for a beef with a Nato ally over this, and we have been sort of ok with Kurds having a homeland, but have not promoted it.

WhoreMods -> RE: Mosul is liberated: IS routed (7/10/2017 10:50:28 AM)

I think Turkey on their way out of NATO soon, lads. There's been a pissing match with other NATO countries over the exercises last month, hasn't there?

Musicmystery -> RE: Mosul is liberated: IS routed (7/10/2017 11:47:13 AM)

One look at a map will show you why we will all continue to keep Turkey as an ally.

mnottertail -> RE: Mosul is liberated: IS routed (7/10/2017 12:09:02 PM)

I said this at the leadup to the Iraq WMD fake nutsucker news war. You have given the Kurds a very easy non-violent (with the surrounding at the beginning) way to get a country.

We should have backed out of Iraq after dusting off the lapels on Husseins double breasted suit, said sorry old boy, and backed out thru Turkey leaving all our materiel with the Kurds, absolutely none of this horseshit would have went on, and it would have been stepping in shit and coming out smelling like a rose.

And we could have infrastructure and single payer now. Instead of nutsucker borrow and spend.

There is nothing "WE" can do. We should have learned our lesson... It is a religion and people of hate... they hate each other but they hate us more. All we have ever done, for the sake of oil, is stir a hornets nest and directed their hate at us. They are on the whole a backward people fighting to hold on to a way of life that fits the 6th century better than today.

Now that we are mostly energy self sufficient we should get out of that hell whole and just let them butcher each other. If we must deal with them then deal according to our fair minded values and not who has the most oil resources.

To me we should also withdraw our support from Israel... Without our support they will be forced to negotiate in good faith for their survival. If they will not do that then let war determine the winner... the only way this will end is with a winner... which of course means they both lose.
