If a policeman in the US is in fear for his life then any shooting he does in his defense is justified under the law.
These dogs look a lot like pit bulls, and justified or not, pit bulls have a rep for being "killer" dogs.
In the heat of the moment he may have genuinely been in fear of injury or even death.
However, that said, pepper spray might have been a better choice at that moment if he was thinking clearly.

If the dogs were chained it gets real shaky, I think I would have tried "bad dog lay down". But then I have only had one dog I couldn't
deal with without violence in my whole life. He ended up with a sore head, jumped at me and flew headfirst into the stone wall behind me, I never did a thing to him.

And why doesn't anyone say why the cop was even there?

Having looked at the video of the incident, I am amazed that the officer was fearful of a dog wagging its tail, as it approached him, then stopping and turning its head away a couple of metres from the cop.

In future, I can see the headlines "Dog Bites Policeman, claims self defence, exonerated by a jury of its peers"!

It's cops like this that give US police such a bad reputation.

The cops were there because the home alarm had gone off. It was a false alarm, and the family had immediately called the alarm company and cancelled it. The cops arrived anyway, and instead of going to the front door and knocking, which was proper protocol, they approached through the fenced back yard, without announcing themselves.

The cops said the dogs charged them, and that is what they wrote in the police report. However, in addition to an alarm system, the family also had video surveillance, and they have released a tape showing the first dog walking towards the officer with his tail wagging, and the officer responded by shooting him in the jaw. The second dog was approaching as well, not charging, and he shot it three times. Afterwards, despite being greeted by the family and knowing that it was a false alarm, the cops prevented them from calling a vet or trying to get the dogs help, saying that Animal Control would be sent to retrieve the dogs. Yet Animal Control was never called.

Their site must be totally screwed up because the video it gave me a video of the family plaing with the dogs when they got back from the vet. But it sounds like the cops totally scwred up, start to finish.

What specs are you running on?

I am on a pretty old computer running on XP and super old hard ware and I have no issues.

But yea, I think the cop who shot the dog deserve to lose his license, especially if he climbed into the backyard of a resident that is not proper protocol. Beyond shooting the dog, it was his disregard of proper protocol that cause dogs protecting their owner back yard to bark at him and cause him to freak out and shoot the dogs.
