ORIGINAL: Aylee The military's job is to kill people and break stuff. There was me under the impression that the military's role was the defence of the State and ensuring peace prevails. Was I woefully misinformed or what? Of course if the job description is "to kill people and break stuff" I can see why it appeals to so many people with psychopathic tendencies such as your good self. But I wonder if any one else would be attracted by such a blood'n'guts job description .... Oh and they get to wear spiffing uniforms too (mustn't forget that!). Yes, you have been misinformed. The military is one tool is to defend the country from real or potential threats, both internal and external (there are other tools). An army is specifically intended for land-based warfare. There is a reason that our military is directed by civilians. Of course, you still have not answered the question of how having transgenders in the military is going to increase military readiness. It seems that you have shifted from claiming that the military's role is "to kill people and break stuff." to agreeing that its role is the defence of the State - "The military is one tool is to defend the country from real or potential threats, both internal and external ". I'm glad that you have come round to seeing this is the case. I don't see that the onus is on me to detail "how having transgenders in the military is going to increase military readiness". It seems to me that those proposing the ban need to justify their case, not vice versa. And thus far I haven't seen a shred of persuasive evidence that justifies the ban. Other militaries, and the US military for a time have or have had TG folk serving, and as far as I know, none has reported any reduction in their battle readiness or efficiency as a consequence of TGs serving. So the ball is very much in the court of those proposing the ban to justify their discrimination. You must have missed the land warfare part. Also - HOW do you think that the military defends the country? By killing people and breaking stuff. Economic sanctions and other tools for defense are NOT the job of the military. TG's need hormone pills every day. How many pints of blood in the logistics train do you want to exchange for these prescriptions when these individuals are deployed? Actually, no, you need to tell me why an exception to the pre-existing conditions policy needs to be made for transgender individuals.
