According to my coworkers who had been there we (the military) were more popular in Vietnam than Maryland. But nobody was shooting at us. It did not compare
to being in combat.

The rest were in the endless support roles the military generates.
But if you ask any of them today there were bullets whizzing all around them.
Good deal of that was roaches and hash oil.
But if they were really there and want to embellish a bit in their senior years,
that's okay by me so long as they don't start claiming citations they never earned.
I mean Brian Williams had bullets in Iraq,
and Hillary Clinton had them in Bosnia,
so what's wrong with a company clerk having them too?

Agreed, I have read that as low as 0% were actual combat troops. Still there were no front lines so there were no safe jobs if you were in country.. Anyone who was in any combat zone deserves special credit.

During Tet even reporters were getting shot at, in the hotel that was their headquarters.

Tet is an annual holiday so every year there is a "tet" offensive. The one in 68 was a bit more interesting than those of past years.
