Nation-wide? The idea that gated communities are the result of mixed housing is preposterous. Gated communities become popular when people started buying into the idea that their lives are constantly in danger and that they can live in a safe, secure space where nothing bad ever happens. It's the same insanity that drove everyone to believe they need to own a gun because someone out there is out to get them, the police are ineffective, and any day now Obama is going to send the army in to collect their guns. You look at some mixed communities that 'failed' and you don't bother to ask why-- you just say 'socialism' and then you stop 'thinking' (assuming you actually put any thought whatsoever into it, which I doubt). You are willing to accept gated communities as 'natural' because you're too lazy to look at WHY they failed. So why did the communities fail? And while we're at it, how exactly did you reach the conclusion that America/capitalism is currently 'succeeding'? You just assume the problem was 'government control' (what does that even mean?), and instead of asking yourself why it failed there but most certainly succeeds in social democracies in Europe, you just say 'because socialism is bad'. Maybe people started moving away because they just couldn't handle dealing with people who are different-- so is that the government's fault or the people's fault? The problem obviously wasn't that the poor people were priced out of their neighborhoods by expensive 'rich people' goods if they're the ones who took over... so why did all the wealthy or middle class people leave? This is how we get to Trump-- it doesn't matter if something is right or wrong, it just matters that you personally are allowed to do what you want to do, not feel guilty about anything, not ask yourself if you're wrong about anything, not try to make anything better... until finally you rally behind a fascist because he tells you it's okay to stop thinking and hate and fear people who are different from you.
