If they are sex offenders and pedophiles with no open warrants, then by all means, give them shelter....

A cardboard box in the gator filled swamp will do nicely, but then it might be considered cruelty to the gators.

Of course I support capital punishment, and sex offenders and child molesters should be shot after the appeals process is finished, unless they are members of the clergy, then crucifixion works.

And no, I am not trying to be funny or sarcastic.

As a matter of interest: What would people feel about, say, a man who'd been identified as one of those with an open warrant out on him, but who happened to have just rescued a family or done something else somewhat heroic in the face of Irma?

I dont give a crap if they saved someone's life, if they are pedophiles or sexual predators they destroyed someone's life at some point, card board box, swamp, gators.

So, if my stalker saved a family of kittens, it's all good now??

PeonForHer -> RE: Sherriff says he will arrest criminals (9/7/2017 2:32:41 PM)

JLF and LP,

The chances of a potential crim (assuming a person's innocent till proven guilty, of course) having an open warrant out on him for sex or paedo crimes are quite small. The vast bulk of crimes don't fit into those categories. Say it's someone wanted for burglary. What then?

OK, I'll be upfront: I saw the film 'Dunkirk' last night. Thousands of boat-owners crossed the English Channel to pick up troops and bring them back to England. In reality there were a lot of stories of all kinds of knaves and rogues stepping up to the crease ... and the authorities being very grateful, regardless. Ruffians of all kinds showed they had finer stuff, underneath. Smugglers, spivs, even East End gangsters ... they still wanted to do 'their bit'. That kind of thing. The US equivalent? No?

servantforuse -> RE: Sherriff says he will arrest criminals (9/7/2017 2:51:05 PM)

I'm glad the sheriff is doing this, but why announce it. If they show up, arrest them. Don't tip them off in advance.

You want to ignore all crimes on the off chance that one of them did something good.
I am sure their good deeds would come up in court.

You missed my post about him wanting criminals to stay the fuck away didn't you?

No, I'm thinking of those types whose names would be on the record as wanted for, say, something like theft, but who'd done something quite heroic when it was needed. Not the 'off chance'. I mean, for example: a man draws up in a car at the sanctuary carrying your kids, Bama. You hear that he's wanted for robbing a liquor store. Are you going to be behind the sheriff putting him in gaol, regardless?

Gah. It's difficult to think of real-life examples. Hurricane Irmas don't happen every day.

The flow of the legal system would be the arrested person bringing up recent deeds in his arraignment before a magistrate judge. Then, the judge decides if charges should go forward, assigns a trial date, assigns bail, then turns the defendant over to the bailiffs to process the court findings.
If the guy is really a good guy and the judge can see it; the chap might be back at the relief shelter by supper with a trial date set a couple of months in the future and not have to post bond.

Or, the guy might end up in solitary confinement at the state prison awaiting trial.

Judges get to do selective enforcement, not front line law enforcement officers.

Just my two cents worth.

I didn't miss the point. He should want them there to arrest more of them.

If he robbed a person, and at another time pulled someone out of a burning car do you give them a pass? I would expect them to show up as a character witness, I would.
How many crimes do you give them a pass for?

If I drive the speed limits 10,000 times and speed once do I get a pass?

you can label any damn thing a crime, in fact many crimes are total fucking unconstitutional bs

A person 'doing their bit' during a time of crisis doesn't mean they shouldn't face the music for whatever they have a warrant out for them for. An open warrant would mean that law enforcement was looking for them, anyway.

I seem to remember something about how the notorious gangster Lucky Luciano was an enormous help to the Allies in running Sicily after they kicked the fascists out of Sicily. Luciano had been deported to Italy and was hoping to be allowed to go back to the US in return for his 'services'.

Luciano seemed to be able to get things done that no one else could manage to get done. I have no information on the methods Luciano used to ensure that things got 'done' - no doubt no one was minded to inquire too closely. But all accounts suggest that dragging one's feet when Luciano wanted something to happen was not the most prudent attitude to adopt if one wished to live to a ripe old age ...
