OK, I'll be upfront: I saw the film 'Dunkirk' last night. Thousands of boat-owners crossed the English Channel to pick up troops and bring them back to England. In reality there were a lot of stories of all kinds of knaves and rogues stepping up to the crease ... and the authorities being very grateful, regardless. Ruffians of all kinds showed they had finer stuff, underneath. Smugglers, spivs, even East End gangsters ... they still wanted to do 'their bit'. That kind of thing. The US equivalent? No?

I seem to remember something about how the notorious gangster Lucky Luciano was an enormous help to the Allies in running Sicily after they kicked the fascists out of Sicily. Luciano had been deported to Italy and was hoping to be allowed to go back to the US in return for his 'services'.

Luciano seemed to be able to get things done that no one else could manage to get done. I have no information on the methods Luciano used to ensure that things got 'done' - no doubt no one was minded to inquire too closely. But all accounts suggest that dragging one's feet when Luciano wanted something to happen was not the most prudent attitude to adopt if one wished to live to a ripe old age ...

I remember something along those lines too. Not just that Luciano ran things in his own inimitably 'robust' style - but also that he had the infrastructure. I don't suppose the truth of it all is well documented though - that being the nature of things regarding the 'criminal fraternity'. (Want of a better term.)

Fancy a bet on how long it takes conspiracy boy to start bleating that of course Luciano could run Sicily because big gubmint is just a protection racket like the mob do on a bigger scale?

With regard to sexual offenders who have previously served time and been released, they commonly have restrictions placed by a judge about how closely they can associate with children. That would preclude them from legally entering a shelter even if there was no open warrant for them. That's one of the few cases where the rights of the general public are allowed to supercede the rights of an individual.

Correct. That's why the Sheriff mentioned them, saying they'd be denied shelter. Those with open warrants is a separate group (whose membership may include sex offenders/predators).

I'm glad the sheriff is doing this, but why announce it. If they show up, arrest them. Don't tip them off in advance.

The announcement was letting those who are registered sex offenders/predators to not try come there, as they would be turned away.

I doubt the Sheriff wants to arrest anyone with an open warrant. Mentioning that was more likely an attempt to have people keep on keeping on away from his County.

If they are sex offenders and pedophiles with no open warrants, then by all means, give them shelter....
A cardboard box in the gator filled swamp will do nicely, but then it might be considered cruelty to the gators.
Of course I support capital punishment, and sex offenders and child molesters should be shot after the appeals process is finished, unless they are members of the clergy, then crucifixion works.
And no, I am not trying to be funny or sarcastic.

http://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-things-that-could-make-you-a-sex-offender-2013-10
    1. Taking naked photos of yourself - if you're a minor
    2. Visiting a prostitute
    3. Peeing in public
    4. Flashing your breasts
    5. Having consensual sex with a teenager, even if you're a teenager, too
    6. Sleeping with your sister
    7. Giving another child a hug (in this case, the boy tried to hug a fellow student "too much")

Do all those people merit being killed?

And, you can get put on the pervert watch list for giving the neighbor's kid a bath after they poured used motor oil all over themselves with mom and dad nowhere to be found.

My co-worker that got caught in that insanity took four years and over $100k to clear his name.
