I just saw that and was going to start a thread, but you beat me to it. The sheriff is supposed to arrest fugitives, so this seems a way of doing so efficiently. Especially if he is concentrating on sexual offenders and pedophiles. I wouldn't want them in shelters either. And it's not like he isn't offering them alternative shelter, probably even with better food. I'm just not sure I'd have announced it in advance, just quietly picked them up instead.

It doesn't really matter what he does. He can violate the rights of anyone he wishes, or shoot them (only if they're black of course) harrass them, basically anythin g legal or otherwise. If he gets caught and convicted, Trump will pardon him...

That's not exactly what he said. He did say that sex offenders/predators will not be allowed [into the shelters]. But, he also mentioned people with open warrants which would encompass anyone with an open warrant, not just sex offenders/predators. Laws have to be followed. If sex offenders/predators are disallowed - by law - from being at the shelters, then there you go. If there are no laws preventing them from being there, then you're talking about discrimination, which isn't allowed. Right? As far as people with open warrants? Arrest them. Put them in jail. We have laws, and they need to be followed.

Well, if they didn't have open warrants I doubt he could legally arrest them. And I'm sure he will be very equal-opportunity-ish in terms of picking up anyone with an open warrant, but given the situation it seems like extra consideration for sex offenders and predators is just being practical.

You could have served your jail sentence years ago and still be on the sex offender registry (even with no further sex crime convictions). People who are on the registry (for whatever reason) will be turned away. Separately, anyone with an open warrant (regardless of the criminal act) will be arrested. That's what the sheriff said. They can be two separate groups.

With regard to sexual offenders who have previously served time and been released, they commonly have restrictions placed by a judge about how closely they can associate with children. That would preclude them from legally entering a shelter even if there was no open warrant for them.That's one of the few cases where the rights of the general public are allowed to supercede the rights of an individual.

Isn't this sheriff underestimating just what it'll take to deal with Irma? From what I can make out he and his staff won't have the time or the energy to piddle around with all the checks and paperwork involved. Would there even be available connections to the computers that store the details of those on whom there are open warrants? Would there even be electricity?

It's an inland county out of the direct path. That's one reason people will be sheltering there.

Not sure what sort of portable equipment they plan to use, but I imagine they could download a PDF type file that had a listing of all the open warrants. Then you could check for names on that list without any kind of WiFi or cell connection needed. Most of us have smart phones that could handle that, at least as long as the batteries held out. Or they could always go old school and use paper printouts listing all open warrants.

I think another aspect is that the sheriff is basically announcing that "If you're a criminal or registered sex offender or both, stay the fuck out of my county."
