It's tragic all around.

The officer wasn't qualified to handle the situation, having not undergone Crisis Intervention Training.

Schultz refused to drop the knife, though it wasn't extended, and from what I gather was a basic Swiss Army Knife or similar.

I think the officer should have called for backup. Used a Taser instead, if he was armed with one. Used his baton. Made decisions he couldn't have made without the necessary training.

We have already establish that.

A He already had backup.
B The campus cops don't have tasers.
C We don't know why the school doesn't buy tasers
D I suspect that the school didn't want to "waste " money on the cops putting
them in a impossible. We have seen cities do this (the Gardner case for example)
so I have no problem seeing a college doing this.

Yet he was the only officer to discharge his weapon. Was there a senior officer on scene, or was he it?

And you act like I sat through and read what's likely mostly nonsense between the OP & my post.

Nothing I saw said.
Nope I was bringing you up to date.

I think it would be hard for a grand jury to convict the officer, because it always is. But he has no business doing more than pushing paper.

Could be, so far people want to only talk about his organization, they don't address why the cops where not properly equipped or why they
did what they did.

JVoV -> RE: Geogia Tech Student. (9/20/2017 5:27:34 PM)

Whose organization? If you don't have the decency to use someone's chosen pronouns, at least stick with a last name, or 'suspect' even, I guess. It's less confusing that way.

Marini -> RE: Geogia Tech Student. (9/20/2017 5:34:14 PM)

I call this murder, plain and simple.

Swiss army knife? really EVEN if it was a switchblade, there was no need to use deadly force, on this person.

At the very least, they could have shot her/him in the hand or wrist.

What's next, police shoot you for wielding a pencil?

The name of his organization was Pride.
No indication it was at all violent.
It is as I suspect you can figure out a gay rights organization.

Do you make a habit of dishonoring the dead? Or ignoring the plights of anyone different than you?

You're now choosing to be a bastard, even though I gave you a very clear and easy out to avoid it. That's a shame, Bama.

You have no idea how shooting them in the hand outside of movies works, it doesn't.
At best it works, the bullet keeps going till it hits who knows what or who.

Let's see, since she/he only had a knife, why not use a taser, or gosh forbid, just take him/her down?
There had to be another less deadly alternative.

I was doing no such thing.
You asked me to name the organization to make it easier to follow. I did.
I made the point that they were non-violent, how can that be insulting.
And then I gave you credit to be able to figure out what their focus was without
a detailed explanation. That was hardly insulting.
You must not have read my post completely wrong.

Yes, the school needed to give them some non lethal weapons.
No explanation why they didn't.
No tasers.

Are you suggesting that they should have jumped him unarmed and if they get cut up to bad.

IF police officer's can't take down someone with a Swiss army knife, then we are seriously worse off than I thought.
So we no longer "take down"/taze/ and dis-arm?
Just shoot them dead?
Okay, got it.

Lucylastic -> RE: Geogia Tech Student. (9/20/2017 7:26:04 PM)

I really dont know how the british police have survived without having to use guns to use against crazed (ahem) knife holders.

Making take down the standard gets cops killed and wounded . If it is only one in ten would you do it.
Most Departments have tasers but for some reason the school would not buy them, yell at the school,
not at the cops.

I would have shot him in the foot, arm or leg, at least he would have a chance to live.

If you hit him where it stops the bullet there is a good chance of hitting an artery that kills.
If not you still don't know where it ends up.
Doesn't it make more sense to make the department give them the equipment they need?

Marini -> RE: Geogia Tech Student. (9/20/2017 7:59:04 PM)

Of course it does Bama, they could have had stun guns, plastic bullets, mace, "you name it", and tasers.

There are many alternatives to bullets these days, wish I could invent more alternatives.
