Marini -> Cop shoots suspect 7 times after he grabbed for his gun (9/22/2017 4:30:24 PM)

I might as well jump into the fray here.
I have watched this video several times, I find it very, very disturbing.
**Graphic alert***

The suspect looks like a very young man, GRANTED he did grab for the officer's gun.
But did the officer have to shoot him 7 times???
The suspect was not even close to him, why did he fire the 4th, 5th, 6th and it appears the 7th shot killed him.

Things are getting out of hand.
In one of the video's you can tell that there was more than one cop on the scene.

The suspect had to be at least 10-15 feet away from the cop, and he was saying "no, no, no".
OMG, I just watched it again, I thought I was seeing things.
The suspect was just standing there, he was not even charging him!
I tell you I am done.

A Because the first six didn't stop him.
B Because it has be proven that in these situations people fire more rounds than they think they have.
C For many people there is a time slow down by the time the reaction to the first time they hit gets to them they have already pulled the trigger the 6th or 7th time.

JVoV -> RE: Cop shoots suspect 7 times after he grabbed for his gun (9/22/2017 5:10:04 PM)

The suspect stole the officer's backup ammunition, which could be used easily in a similar handgun. The officer had to believe the suspect was in possession of such a gun, otherwise, why steal the ammo clip?

Suspect refused to drop as ordered, so the officer kept shooting.

The officer did not shoot any further once the suspect was down.

It all looks clean to me. Suicide by cop.

I don't think you have an axe to grind.
I don't know yet if I think the shooting was justified.
Let me point out a couple of things.
In addition to the time dilation factors I have already mentioned there are 2 more things you should consider.
The first time you watched it (and you were in no danger) you thought the guy was going for the cops gun.
That is the only view the cop got, he didn't have the luxury of watching it a half dozen times to make up his mind.
You don't know that the other cop was yelling at him and the cop would have assumed that the other cop
was yelling no, no, no at the guy he was shooting at.

There is no such thing as a clip fed pistol in modern manufacture. Clips are used for military rifles to be able to rapidly reload magazines.

i got into a sort of argument with a friend of mine because he didn't like that this particular car guy referred to the engine in a car as a motor. I said it was correct to do so and he insisted otherwise, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

im not versed in guns but my dictionary says a clip is "a magazine for a firearm" and im wondering if its the engine/motor thing again?

although, just found this:

quote:

A magazine is an ammunition storage and feeding device within or attached to a repeating firearm. Magazines can be removable (detachable) or integral to the firearm. The magazine functions by moving the cartridges stored in the magazine into a position where they may be loaded into the chamber by the action of the firearm. The detachable magazine is often referred to as a clip, although this is technically inaccurate.[1][2][3]...

The defining difference between clips and magazines is the presence of a feed mechanism in a magazine, typically a spring-loaded follower, which a clip lacks. A magazine has four parts as follows; a spring, a spring follower, a body and a base. A clip is made of one continuous piece of stamped metal and has no moving parts.Use of the term "clip" to refer to detachable magazines is a point of strong disagreement.[2][7][8][9]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_%28firearms%29

I wonder if in literature, journalism and tv/movies the terms get used interchangeably.

Some people use clip to describe a stripper clip as opposed to a self contained detachable magazine.
Others I am inclined to be one of them use clip for anything detachable.

Sadly, I was thinking suicide by cop.
The suspect appeared to either be intoxicated or stoned.
ugh

I have no axe to grind, I often don't even watch these videos these days.
This is another sad situation, yet troubling.
It will be a while, before I watch this sort of video again.

I am guilty of saying "gun" instead of "magazine" in my OP.
I am not that gun literate.
I have wanted to take Firearms Training for a long time, especially since I moved to VA.
Becoming gun literate will be my first step.

Lucylastic -> RE: Cop shoots suspect 7 times after he grabbed for his gun (9/22/2017 7:45:03 PM)

incredible someone dies because they dont drop their "weapon" but cops can be exonerated by saying they were afraid for their lives.
Training is obviously what they need, not excuses.

I agree Lucy, and I have read many of the responses/and thoughts of many people here, and dozens of comments on that article from the DM.
I understand how serious it is to reach for a magazine, etc.

But the suspect appeared so dazed and non-threatening, I can't fathom the last 3-4 shots.
Especially from someone who did not appear to have a weapon, was not reaching for anything, and was saying "no no no".
Very unsettling for me, which is why I usually don't watch these videos.

Anything detachable that can feed ammunition is a magazine.
A clip is for organizing ammo storage for ease of loading into magazines.

fuck that I say clip because its easier to say and let the grammar nazis piss their pants over it.

Once again there was no reason for that cop to shoot that guy since its perfectly clear he did not grab his gun since he had it in his fucking hand. It looked to me like the guy simply grabbed at anything, did not look like it was for the gun, and like you said he was standing far away and made no aggressive movements toward the cop. It was not suicide by cop it was EXECUTION by cop.

This is one time we agree, he appeared to be reaching for "anything"---which translates to death by cop.

He appeared to be so drunk or high, that he might not even have realized he was a cop.

I will draw a comparison.
If you live in Chicago it is pop.
If you live in outstate MO it is soda.
If you live in St. Louis It was soda pop.
When I moved to Al everything was a coke, even if Pepsi made it.

And it will make you more comfortable.
In outstate Mo a magazine was part of the firearm, a clip was anything detachable.

I quit hunting with an automatic rifle because of this incident.
I was hunting with a automatic rifle.
I shot something, stopped to let it fall.
Nothing happened I fired again, and stopped to let it fall.
Still no reaction.
I fired a 3rd time and waited for it to fall.
I couldn't believe I had missed 3 times.
I fired a 4th time and it fell down.
The person next to me said wow that thing shoots fast.
We checked the game.
It had four hits all of which were clean quick kills.
To me it took about 30-40 seconds to fire those for rounds.
In reality it took no more than 5.
Good chance he fired the 7th before they reacted to the first.
