I guess this Haley woman is a serious Fundie to vote No.

LadyPact -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/4/2017 1:43:18 AM)

“It is important to point out that a ‘no’ vote on the resolution is not addressing same-sex relations, but the wider application of death penalty generally."

Greta75 -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/4/2017 2:51:51 AM)

Yes I was a little confuse by contradicting reports.

Because left media all claim it's just ruling specifically banning death penalty for homosexuality.

Whereas, some other media was saying it is whole blanket ban on death penalty as a whole.

But another confusing thing is that, majority voted YES to the ban.

Does this mean my country cannot practice death penalty anymore?

That will not be good. We love our death penalty. We don't put gays to death. But we certainly want to put murderers to death.

LadyPact -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/4/2017 3:26:01 AM)

That's kind of the problem. As presented, the information is ambiguous.

There is no distinction being made on how or why the death penalty might be imposed.

The problem is that any opinion with a political leaning can use this vote to skew the truth to back their agenda.

Since homosexuality and homosexuality between consenting adults has been fully legal since 2003, the odds of anyone even being up for a death penalty sentence for being homosexual are quite long, indeed.

greta, without peeking at the article, the only way this could be discussed and voted on is a UN thing---and im more convinced of that since you mention nikki haley.

I certainly don't understand the intricacies of international law, but what takes place at the UN, on the whole, does not prevent certain behavior at the sovereign state level. the death penalty is one of those things.

Pinknews isn't the 'left media', it's a gay issues site.
And it isn't about banning the death penalty, it's about banning its use in a discriminatory fashion-- so also against women because they are women (eg: stoning women for cheating but not men), minorities because they are minorities, etc.

MercTech -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/4/2017 5:32:23 PM)

State Department press release states the U.S. voted no because of language buried in the resolution condemning the death penalty in all circumstances.

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/following-backlash-us-clarifies-un-vote-death-penalty-gays-n807151

As always, United Nations resolutions are not binding. A U.N. treaty is only binding on the countries that ratify the treaty. A resolution is just a statement on how the U.N. thinks countries should do business.

I would say they are more left leaning than right leaning don't you think? And that part is probably true.

I only linked pinknews specifically because they were the ones who listed more comprehensive listing of which countries were involve in the voting.

But your implication is that the right then does not support LBGT political rights and as far as I know...that's not true.

It would be hard to say that someone who voted for Mike Pence supports LGBT rights.
More often than not, I think the right doesn't give a fuck if they gain or lose rights.

The Christian right actively wants them to lose rights.

When it comes to LGBT right, most right do not support gay marriage and may not necessary look at sex change as a great thing. That's just facts.

And I consider myself right leaning, as I do not support gay marriage, nor do I support the promotion of sex change as the healthier solution for transgender issues.

JVoV -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/5/2017 2:24:41 PM)

It's too late to be against gay marriage in America. The Supreme Court ruled, and it is now the law of the land. So fuck what you think.

All that's left to be figured out is what it means for the people that choose to oppose it, usually on religious grounds, by using their businesses to make their political statement.

The United States will not agree to give up the death penalty under any circumstances. But being homosexual is not a crime in America anyway.

Actually, it is still a "don't ask, don't tell" matter in a way. "Sodomy" is still a crime in many places. Posting intimate pictures of same sex relations on the internet actually could get you arrested even if on an adult venue. (Not agreeing but noting the existence of the laws.)

Many of those countries practise circumcision. It is my - unproven - impression and suspicion that in such countries the frequency of homosexuals is much higher than in other countries.

Bangladesh - practises circumcision
Botswana
Burundi
China
Egypt - practises circumcision
Ethiopia
India
Iraq - practises circumcision
Japan
Qatar - practises circumcision
Saudi Arabia - practises circumcision
UAE - practises circumcision
USA - practises circumcision

Cuba
South Korea
Philippines
Indonesia - practises circumcision
Tunisia - practises circumcision
Nigeria - practises circumcision
Kenya

bounty44 -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/6/2017 3:34:41 AM)

that's a fascinating thought and itd be a great research study to trace back the roots of circumcision to see how/why they might jibe with cultural, religious and/or legal prohibitions against homosexuality.

ThatDizzyChick -> RE: 13 countries voted against the ban of Death Penalty for Homosexuals (10/6/2017 12:13:37 PM)

Oh fuck off with that stupidity.

I think the bottom line is that nobody cares whether or not you support gay marriage, Greta. You're just one of those people who gets told what to do, and what to think, and you're mostly happy with that. Meanwhile, change happens around you. There's a lot to be said for keeping your life simple. [:)]
