Ellen DeGeneres gets slammed on Twitter over sexist tweet to Katy Perry

Comedian and daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is receiving some backlash from fans after a joke about Katy Perry was taken as sexist.

The star courted outrage on Wednesday after dedicating a tweet to the “Roar” singer on her birthday.

Every piece counts in this 580–square–foot apartment. The small living room has room for eating, working, relaxing and entertaining.

“Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!” the star wrote over an image of her gawking, mouth agape, at Perry’s breasts.

In the wake of the recent Harvey Weinstein scandal, of which DeGeneres was an outspoken critic, dedicating part of her show to sharing her thoughts on the “#MeToo” movement, many fans were quick to mention the idea that this tweet wouldn’t fly had a man posted it. Many began responding to the tweet with the hashtag “#doublestandard.” Others went as far as to compare her to Weinstein and call her a “pig.”

As The Wrap notes, actor Michael Rapaport caught wind of the tweet and voiced his displeasure to Ellen, arguing that “the world would stop” if a man had sent this tweet.

Piers Morgan too speculated that, had a man tweeted something similar, Ellen would be leading the “cries of ‘!’”

Previously, the star dedicated her opening monologue to denouncing the growing environment of sexual harassment in Hollywood with an impassioned speech.

“This is not a male thing or a female thing, it is not a Hollywood or political thing, this is a human thing and it happens in the workplace, it happens in families, it happens all over the world and we are all the same,” she said. “We all want the same thing, we want respect, love and kindness. And if I could have those three things and an iPhone X, I’d be happy.”

The thing about sexual harassment is about mutual consensuality. Like I can sexually harrass my BFF who is male all I want and he is gonna enjoy the attention! And he can do the same to me. Because it's mutually consensual. If he smack my bum playfully, I am fine. He got my permission.

I know Katy and Ellen, and Katy and Cheryl, just girls messing around with each other, good friends and are consensual too.

It all boils down to, make sure you have permission first.

Iirc: she doesn't much like it, on certain occasions. It depends upon whether she's inking a new deal or whether she's staring at Katy's tits.

I remember ( a million years ago, it seems) seeing ellen on "Star Search" and then, seeing her at a local club. I remembered that she used the very same last joke (These performances were a couple of years, apart). Years later (five or six or so), I saw her use the same on The Tonight Show. I didn't think the joke was funny the first time. I found it less funny (exponentially so), the last time I heard it.

When I asked a few people I was watching the Tonight Show with if they thought she was funny, I was told: "You just don't like female comedians."

I started hanging out with different people, after that.
