He didn't think he had to go but with college eventually kicking him out, he was drafted into the Army and yep, thrown right into it.

Officers usually 2nd Lt(s). life expectancy was about 5-7 minutes for the FO. (forward observers) Leaving [him] in charge, a 24 yr, old E-5.

Told everybody to shut the fuck up and be quite. Called in some air support. Soon, the enemy was destroyed or ran. A few good men surrounded by 1500 VC. "How close were you I asked ?" "Close enough to hear them reload." Too close.

Later during another 'observation', last two out, he and another, carried a wounded man 4 fucking miles...saved his life.

2 Army dist. serv. Crosses. Got out, burned everything and buried the remains, told everybody he met back in the states...not to go. You will be wasting your life.
______________________________________________

Jack from good ole' England, was under Montgomery at Normandy, struggled for a few miles in...a few weeks once landed.

Units spread everywhere, situation now very fluid. Got hung up right in the middle of far too many Nazis who retreated in regiment. No air support to call in. 8 months as a German POW, got out 8/45. Passed away at 95 just a few months ago.

________________________________________________

Enlisted 12/17/41, US Navy, after marrying the bosses daughter a year earlier. Went to Tampa for more ET training as he was one and entered as an E-5, came out of Navy ET school an E-6. Shipped to Italy and a sub chaser. Found commandeered and rebuilt a Bull Taco. (small Italian motorcycle) We the most popular sailors on board, for...about 15 minutes. Saw a young OD take out his can for a short cruise. Big mistake...busted to E-6.

Shipped home, around the canal and San Diego. a year later, late 1942 now. USS Oklahoma City battle cruiser. Met the exec.."What can I do to help sir ?" "Can you fix our fucking radio ?" "Sure will Sir." "Great work sailor, you are now E-7 C
PO...destination, Okinawa.

Heard of 'a' bomb. 75 miles out, they said yeaaa but didn't know what the hell anybody was talking about. Slept through the second, 50 miles out now, invasion imminent. "You slept through the 2nd bomb ?" "When you are in action and have any chance to sleep...you sleep." No medals but was offered WO but waqnted a full pres. officer's commission to stay in. Didn't stay in.

I may have left some details out or have them wrong. remember our war dead and veterans on this day...a Happy Veterans day.

For those who went before me and showed me the way …

For those who came after me and serve up to today …

For those who trained us, fixed the vehicles, stitched the wounds, cooked the grub, washed the uniforms, transported us, disseminated our intelligence, who led us into battle, but mostly (even today) for those who've fallen, never to get up, again; the ones who gave the ultimate measure:

Thank you for every gift you've given me, every right you've protected and every wrong you've corrected.

God bless and keep the men and women of the United States Military!

quote:

Infantryman's Prayer

Almighty God, whose will it is that we be leaders of men, hear us as we come to you for guidance in this awesome responsibility. Let us never forget our duty to the men whom we lead. May we instill in them the qualities of loyalty, integrity, and duty. Grant us the patience in dealing with the mistakes of our fellow man. Let us never forget that no man is perfect, but that perfection for fragile humans is trying each day to be better than the day before. Give us courage, O Lord, in the face of danger, keep us pure in heart, clean in mind, and strong in purpose. Remind us that wisdom is not gained in an hour, a day, or in a year, but it is a process that continues all the days of our lives. Keep ever before us our goal which is not to perpetrate war, but to safeguard peace and preserve your great gift to man, Freedom. May you always be near to guide us in decisions, comfort us in our failures, and keep us humble in our successes. We ask your divine blessings and leadership as we discharge the honor and responsibility of leading men in the service of our country. Walk close to us always, our father, that we may not fall.

AMEN

Gratefully,

Michael

If we're quoting poetry, Wilfred Owen deserves to have his say on this:

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Lucy, WM: both those poems are etched on my brain. I think everybody of roughly my age did them for English O level at school.

'Poor sods', is my overriding thought.

I think they're still being used as A level texts, even now.

(That's a really nice blog on Kipling in your link: is he finally getting read as something other than a jingoistic excuse maker who was only any good as a children's writer now?)

As an aside: Have you visited the Imperial War Museum recently? I understand there's some new exhibit which allows you to 'immerse' yourself in a 'First World War Trench Experience'. A friend tried it a while ago - she said they'd even somehow reproduced the smell of cordite.

I've not, no. That and the natural history museum are the two in London I really fancy another look at.

there are a few really good creative works dealing with the nature of the sacrifice sometimes involved---

if you all don't know these, give a listen to "just a dream" by carrie underwood, "traveling soldiers" by the Dixie chicks, and "I drive your truck" by lee brice.

That was great! (Little claim to the slightest of slight fame: my younger bro when out with the sister of the drummer for a while, many moons ago. )

I'm sorry, Bounty - my last post should have been addressed to WhoreMods. He'd linked to a song by The Pogues. My younger brother went out with the sister of the drummer, Andrew Rankin.

That particular one's a cover of an Eric Bogle song, rather than a trad celtic number.

categorizing and organizing music can be probably more challenging than doing the same with books.

with the exception of U2, I have a tendency to put things in the celtic collection even if the band is from Ireland and they are singing other than non-traditional irish or celtic music.

but that said, ive probably got 92 versions of molly Malone, danny boy, loch Lomond and wild mountain thyme, including the pogues' versions of the first two.
