Several years ago, my oldest cousin was at my paternal grandmother's helping her pack up the house before she moved out. He came across an old picture of her that was bent, wrinkled and worn. She asked him if he wanted it or she was going to toss it. When he asked her about it, she told him it was what my our grandfather kept in his uniform breast pocket when he was drafted into WWII (Army). He was part of the 4th wave in the invasion of Normandy. He made it through there and saw continuing action. He was taken as a POW during the Battle of Bulge, and was allowed to keep the picture. According to him (as told by her), the picture and his memories of her were what got him through until he was freed. He passed in June of '89. He was given the picture in the late 2000's. He showed us the picture and told us it's backstory at her funeral in 2011. ................. My youngest cousin served in the Army. He was part of the 173rd Airborne Division that landed over Kirkuk in the initial stages of the Iraq War. He was involved in 3 tours in the war, with his second tour ending after his vehicle was damaged with a roadside IED, severely damaging his ankle. He did make it home safe. ................. All in all, I have many relatives that have been involved in the military; some seeing action and some not. Three of my grandparents and the only great grandparent (maternal, maternal grandmother) I had the pleasure of meeting were part of WWII (my maternal grandmother was part of the Women's Marines). I have two uncles and 3 cousins that have served. I couldn't be more proud of them.
