MercTech -> Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 7:18:14 AM)

Many of my relatives don't understand why I discount the mainstream news networks as unreliable. Frankly after the third time you see a story you were involved in reported totally different from what actually happened you tend to distrust anything from that source. But, obscure technical details misreported to cause fear and outrage is hard to communicate to technical illiterati.

Some setup on details. When gaming, there are several services that can be used for voice communication between players. Microsoft owns Skype now. Ventrillo has been around for over a decade. A new player in the voice comm game is Discord.
Skype is free. The service has suffered seriously since Microsoft bought them but for computer to computer telephony; they are one of the best. And, for a small annual fee you can call regular telephones anywhere in North America (up yours phone company). The downside for gaming is that you have to invite by Skype account name each and every person you want in a group chat each and every time you want to get together.
Ventrilo works great. You pay a monthly fee for a server and all you give the login data to can join in. Downside, the monthly fee goes up the more people you have registered (not actually in) a chat channel.
Discord is free. You set up a channel and share the login data. Works great. The only downside is you have to put up with some advertising on the main screen. But, as the advertising doesn't interfere with communication or interrupt game play, no one objects.

Note that Discord is free and you have a permanent voice version of an internet chat room. Guess what, people have used it for more than gaming.

Now, the fake news... the original NBC piece claiming that Discord is an Alt-right, KKK, Nazi, organizational site. (at least by inference)

The "me too" articles are jumping on the bandwagon
http://www.rollingstone.com/glixel/news/tracing-link-between-gamergate-trump-supporters-alt-right-w510618

And there are the counter arguments laughing at NBC for the insane premise of the article.

It's been fake news for at least 35 years already.

What I find instructive (not even going to say 'disappointing') is that the Trumpsters just now figured it all out.

Well God bless them for saving the day!

I thought Gamergate was about some journalist getting doxed because her ex was a whiney little pussy three years back? All of that bullshit noise about "ethics in videogame journalism" as an excuse to threaten somebody online.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 7:51:42 AM)

I'm not all that conversant on gaming. I haven't played WoW since right before they blew the whole map up.

Two questions, though:

Was Discord involved in any of the "gamergate" issue that went down some time ago?

If they were, do you think that's the reason the media is making shit up?

Peace,

Michael

Naaa, the Zoe Quinn boyfriend blog was just the tipping point when he documented how Zoe provided sex to game journalists for rave reviews of a crap game. Gamergate was all about gaming trade press not actually reporting but being shills for game producers. It was about ethics in journalism with the journalists howling that it was all racist, sexist, homophobic, to diss them while not addressing the issue of ethics at all.

Lucylastic -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 8:04:51 AM)

Response....basic, something to do with the dunning kruger effect.

WhoreMods -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 8:05:09 AM)

Looks like a few of the anonymous tweets to whatsername were routed through Discord so that that the badasses who enjoy picking on women could maintain their anonymity, but what the fuck that has to do with the site being popular with some of the poor oppressed white supremacists (or not being popular with them at all) is unclear.

Lucylastic -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 8:06:44 AM)

Of course sexism has no role in ethics, LOL

He didn't provided any documentation or anything besides allegations, in fact.

Discord wasn't released until after Gamergate moved to history despite NBC inferring they were related.

But, Gamergate keeps getting resurrected as a zombie boogum when someone tries to use it as an example of sexism based on people that wrote ABOUT it instead of fact checking.

Naa, those tweets had nothing to do with Discord but were the infamous Sarkeesian tweets that all came from the same mystery account that appeared and was deleted in the same day... but NBC filed off the identification of where they came from and from whom.

Pointing to a bunch of really nasty messages from an account that is created, sends a flurry of abusive drivel, then is deleted in the same day didn't really create a climate of veracity to claims there was a conspiracy of right wingers out to get her to my mind. The devil was in the details and not the howls of conspiracy.

It was obviously nothing to do with politics, true enough.

But, back to the issue I have, along with a lot of others, with the NBC piece. Linking a tech service, Discord, with an internet kerfuffle that didn't come into vogue until couple of years afterwards is ignorant at least if not outright re-arranging history to suit a narrative.

My thesis is that Discord is to the Alt-Right as Cellphones are to international terrorism. NBC doing a FUD piece linking the Alt-right with Discord is certainly an example of "fake news". To use the same mindset; if you use a cellphone you must be involved in terrorism.

Edwird -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 9:16:11 AM)

Google/Android is "just a tech service," which happens to track every freaking move you make.

I had never heard of Discord, but I figured it had to be a general "smear". Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me.

Thank you for your answer.

Peace,

Michael

You actually watch TV?

Oh.

Okay, got it.

We don't give a shit ABOUT 100,000 dead Iranians based on false accusation, but when it comes to gamers . . .

Yeah, got it.

cloudboy -> RE: Why Mainstream News is Considered Fake News (11/15/2017 6:13:28 PM)

There is very little "fake news" because journalist don't intentionally make up stories (b/c they'd be fired for doing so.)

Unless they work for Steve Bannon or Alex Jones, then they get promoted.

News International keep a slush fund to pay off defamation suits as well.
