(And the Beeb is the BBC: you know, those evil state funded socialist propagandists?

I knew. I was just injecting some levity.

There was no need whatsoever for any of that.

There seems to be stuff on the telegraph website already, but I think the Mail gets the last word around here.

So, it goes?:
    1. BBC
    2. Telegraph
    3. Daily Mail

As far as reliability goes, where do The Times, The Guardian, and Financial Times fit in?

The Times and The Grauniad are sort of opposite numbers, both fairly decent papers with an obvious ideological slant. The FT has better fact checking than either, but is undervalued as a news source because it concentrates on monetary stories and has a somewhat conservative (as in fiscally conservative) bias.

Thank you, and lol at the bolded part (googled it because it was too fucked up to be that likely of a typo).

well the geezer is 93 and wanting his wife to have a go, so last week he fires the VP who the military backed heavily, and I think that about covers any of the ISIS aspects. Muslims are not a force in Zimbabwe, its majority xtian by a wide margin.

Jesus Christ - at age 93, I can't imagine I'd give a flying toss about anything other than making sure I could do a bowel movement without a cardiac event and my blanket doesn't slip below my knees as I watch repeats of 'Come Dancing'. It's worthy of major respect, really, that an Olympic-class coffin-dodger like Mugabe is still keenly interested in oppressing his people with the utmost brutal vigour even at his extremely venerable old age.

...presumably el presidente won't won't be tweeting about this until they find somebody in his staff who knows where that is, and they make an attempt to explain it to him.
Biggish news?
(I've linked to the Washington Post so you all know the story's on the level, rather than fake news...)

IMO, biggish news, for now. The situation will have to play out to determine if it's a yuge development, or just same old same old stuff. If Mugabe is, indeed, deposed and another dictator is set in place, it could be simply the same old same old stuff (it could lead to a 'kinder and gentler' dictator, which would be better than Mugabe). If legit democratic elections occur in 2018, it could be a yuge development.

We shall have to wait and see, true enough.
According to the updates on the Beeb (fake news!), his wife has already fled the country, so at least they're spared her taking over.

Maybe she went to Switzerland to cash out their stash. Might be time to go retire in Saudi...play some golf like Idi did until he died from syphilis. Now there's a tell.

Laying low in Nairobi allegedly (FAKE NEWS!), but I'm sure you can catch a flight to Switzerland from there...

Well it used to be said that 'all roads lead to Rome' but now it's...'all roads lead to a Zurich bank.'

jlf1961 -> RE: Coup in Zimbabwe... (11/16/2017 5:34:31 AM)

Considering that this is one of the African countries where coups are so regular you can set your watch by them, is this really any surprise?

Non sequitur.

Zimbabwe's been under the same management since it ceased to be Rhodesia in 1980, jeff.

FR

There's a sense of anticipation amongst Zimbabweans - but ...

"If the ousted Mr Mnangagwa does come back to succeed Mr Mugabe as president, his credentials are not too dissimilar.

Another veteran of the country's war of independence, he has been considered a key link between the army, intelligence agencies and Zanu-PF party. He has been accused of masterminding atrocities during the country's civil war and attacks on opposition supporters.

In the last four decades, the country has been dominated by veterans and the military looks to have intervened to keep that status quo."

Obviously: the army were fairly happy with the situation until Mugabe deposed him and stated that his wife would be taking over as president instead, weren't they?

PeonForHer -> RE: Coup in Zimbabwe... (11/16/2017 6:18:50 AM)

Yep, apparently so. It's largely or even wholly about about preventing a 'dynasty', it seems.

We're having trouble keeping hold of fucking Scotland at the moment: an Empire would be impossible for the job-dodging sow in number ten to handle: she's already pissed away a billion pounds because she can't concentrate on the one job she's meant to be doing...

Well Zimbabwe came from Southern Rhodesia which became Rhodesia and then in 79 became Zimbabwe, so going way back, one is forced to call this their first.

I think Nigeria leads that league. The history of military coups in Nigeria (in 1966, 1975, 1983, 1985, 1990 and 1993) have by now certainly shown the fallacy in the idea that military forces can bring political stability. Seems it's about time for another one.

From my memory, they are all murderous thieves and almost all of African politics and military...is corrupt.

Now that's my kind of shopping spree. $1 billion pounds ? What did she do, go for the works, pedicure, facial and hair job ? Hell, could have some real nice implants on that budget.

One source has this: The implosion of Zanu-PF unity comes as no surprise after years of internal conflicts within the party and with the military veterans being witnessed publicly alongside the state’s continued denigration of human life in all aspects of its society.

NEW minimum wage: A yard worker or gardener will now get US$85 per month or a weekly wage of US$19.60, while a cook or housekeeper is now entitled to US$90 per month or US$20.79 per week.

Those domestic workers looking after the disabled had their wages pegged at US$95 per month or US$21.94 per week.

Some domestic workers with Red Cross certificates or similar qualification who take care of the disabled and the aged are paid US$100 or US$23.10 per week.

Those who do not stay with their employers are now entitled to monthly allowances of US$50 accommodation, US$26 for transport, US$5 for lights, US$5 for fuel or cooking and US$5 for water.

Labor in Zimbabwe is virtually, institutionalized slavery.

Labour has been barely played slavery under Mugabe for the best part of forty years. Whatever's sparked this off, I can't believe it's humanitarian issues, or they'd have ousted the loathsome shit years ago.

She bribed the northern Irish loyalists to form a coalition government with her as the minority party. It took a big bribe after what her predecessor as PM did to the libdems when he headed a coalition.
