I just took an online personality test -- I have no idea how accurate it might be, but it seemed to describe me pretty well. I found I am an "Introverted Intuitive Thinking Judging" type, one of 16 types in the Myers-Briggs scale. I'm moderately the first two (introverted, intuitive) and slightly the other two.

I'm a submissive. I wonder if others took the test whether we might see patterns -- subs tending toward some types, doms tending toward other types. Maybe we won't see any pattern, which would still be interesting. Maybe this will tell us something about ourselves and about BDSM.

So, if you want, take the test and post your results here. Will it tell us anything? Is it accurate? I dunno. I'll call it fun and maybe insightful.

Here's where you can take the test:

CT,

I like to the think the Briggs-Meyers Type Indicator (BMTI) is pretty accurate. It described me fairly well. Of course, you also have to take into account what I call the horoscope effect. No one would agree with a horoscope that said they were selfish, withdrawn and dummer than a box of rocks. But everyone will agree with a horoscope that says they're generous, outgoing and intelligent. It's the same with the BMTI. Often, we agree with those things we want to believe about ourselves and disagree with those items we don't want to believe.

But I'm a submissive ... and the BMTI kind of points that out.

That's fascinating, Ron. What was it about the test results that seemed very compatible with submissiveness?

I thought these paragraphs from the discription of the INTJ type (mine) might be common for submissives:

"Personal relationships, particularly romantic ones, can be the INTJ's Achilles heel. While they are capable of caring deeply for others (usually a select few), and are willing to spend a great deal of time and effort on a relationship, the knowledge and self-confidence that make them so successful in other areas can suddenly abandon or mislead them in interpersonal situations.

"This happens in part because many INTJs do not readily grasp the social rituals; for instance, they tend to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk and flirtation (which most types consider half the fun of a relationship). To complicate matters, INTJs are usually extremely private people, and can often be naturally impassive as well, which makes them easy to misread and misunderstand. Perhaps the most fundamental problem, however, is that INTJs really want people to make sense. :-) This sometimes results in a peculiar naivete', paralleling that of many Fs -- only instead of expecting inexhaustible affection and empathy from a romantic relationship, the INTJ will expect inexhaustible reasonability and directness.

"Probably the strongest INTJ assets in the interpersonal area are their intuitive abilities and their willingness to "work at" a relationship. Although as Ts they do not always have the kind of natural empathy that many Fs do, the Intuitive function can often act as a good substitute by synthesizing the probable meanings behind such things as tone of voice, turn of phrase, and facial expression. This ability can then be honed and directed by consistent, repeated efforts to understand and support those they care about, and those relationships which ultimately do become established with an INTJ tend to be characterized by their robustness, stability, and good communications."

Hi there

I've always found the Myer-Briggs types to be scarily accurate. I myself am Introverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiving so very close to yours CTclay. I'm submissive as well but that could just be a coincidence. I think it's a very interesting idea though for anyone who knows their type to post it here.

This is also my very first post. So obviously introverted even online.

But you have to keep in mind that the BMTI is not a scientific method. It relies solely on the answers you give to the questionaire. It was never meant to be anything more than a tool for understanding how people may or may not behave in relationships and in social situations.

Descriptions of the personality type Feline links to oddly reminded me of some aspects of myself, even though Feline and I share only two of the four categories. Have you ever looked on one of those placemats in Chinese restaurants that describe all the different types from Chinese astrology? I often find that I can see at least parts of myself in about half of them. My mind is open on this whole thing. I'd be fascinated to find that patterns might be found here (but you could predict that from my personality type...).

CT,

That's my point exactly! A person's personality has nothing to do with which year in the Chinese calendar they were born in or under which astrological sign they were born. Let's be rational here. Our personalities are 33% genetic and 66% cognizant - meaning, we are what we've learned to be by viewing the behaviors (and rewards or punishments) of others, or how we've learned to behave ourselves to gain rewards or prevent punishment.

I'm also an INFJ, though I am dubious of tests like this in general.

::laughing:: considering it said I am *moderate* in all of the catagories, and those who know me would far from call me that I can't say this test made me believe it's outcome much. If anything I do everything more to extremes than moderately (just look in the room with the 150 Christmas presents and adding up).

quote:

It was never meant to be anything more than a tool for understanding how people may or may not behave in relationships and in social situations.

It's been about 15 years since I had it in class, but it wasn't described that way at all. I learned it was to measure "cognitive style" for the way folks process information and make decisions. For example, I'm very much one who sees "the forest and not the trees", so when I hired an analyst to work for me I made sure to get one who was detail oriented both to complement my skills as well as that was what his job required.

One thing that was interesting is that I did a paper about creativity; I didn't find that there was a lot of research in that area, but one book tried to see if creativity could be associated with one of the Myers-Briggs cognitive styles. So they focused on architects who were generally regarded as creative, and as I recall about 80% of them tested in one of the MB quadrants. A telling indicator considering that only about 12% of the general population actually lands there.

Perhaps if Lady Angelika spots this thread she can clarify any misstatements I've made because this stuff is even fresher in her mind. But back to the original question -- I see no reason to believe that submissiveness or dominance should be associated with any MB cognitive styles.

<Running gleefully for bookshelf to check Keirsey book on types!>

I'm so happy to see this subject come up as it fascinates me too! There's an interesting coincidence - though certainly nothing verifiable - going on on this thread right now - the posters so far are 5-1 Intuitives, as opposed to Sensors. (Counting myself - I'm INTP) Yet Sensors make up 85% of (American) society, and Intuitors only 15%....

Of course this means absolutely nothing, it could just mean that our type really enjoys hanging out on bulletin boards on Saturday nights! ( Certainly that might bias why the majority of posters so far are Introverts, too ;D ) But I'll gladly take the coincidence as one more shred of evidence for a hypothesis about why I, and perhaps some others, value D/s - because it's a mental connection that transcends the sensory input, which as an Intuitor makes the connection far more real to me.

Thanks CTclay for the post!

interesting... eNFj - Teacher Idealist

"The Idealists called Teachers are abstract in their thought and speech, cooperative in their style of achieving goals, and directive and extraverted in their interpersonal relations." - This is definately me.

"The Teachers are found in no more than 2 or 3 percent of the population. They like to have things settled and arranged. They prefer to plan both work and social engagements ahead of time and tend to be absolutely reliable in honoring these commitments. At the same time, Teachers are very much at home in complex situations which require the juggling of much data with little pre-planning." Interesting as i am a corporate events planner as well as a business operations consultant, it seems to be right on target...

Overall....

Extroverted 56
Intuitive 44
Feeling 11
Judging 22

my Master thinks that the numbers appear to be skewed from this perspective as He believes i am MUCH more intuitive to my own as well as to others thoughts, feelings and needs... but nonetheless.... very interesting.

I seem to be an eNTj type.

Extroverted: 11
Intuitive: 56
Thinking: 33
Judging: 44

"FieldMarshal Rational" according to Keirsey's analysis.

I think it's funny to see that I share traits with Napoleon Bonaparte, Carl Sagan, and Steve Martin. Quite a mix.

Bonaparte and Steve Martin -- I always think of them together ... must be the Egyptian connection...

I never gave my exact scores. Here they are:

Introverted -- 33
Intuitive -- 44
Thinking -- 1
Judging -- 1

Which makes me a "Mastermind" -- which seems odd since I'm a submissive. The description says: "Natural leaders, Masterminds are not at all eager to take command of projects or groups, preferring to stay in the background until others demonstrate their inability to lead."

As a submissive, I would just leave the relationship if the domme demonstrated an inability to lead. Actually, that happened once and I ended the D/s relationship but stayed on as boyfriend, demonstrating that "To the Mastermind, organizational structure and operational procedures are never arbitrary, never set in concrete..."

The description also says, "As the organizing capabilities the Masterminds increase so does their inclination to take charge of whatever is going on." That rings some bells with me, but I don't feel that way in any relationships, vanilla or BDSM.

Understanding a woman seems much, much too complex a matter for me to ever master. I'll just stick with obeying. As long as she can lead ...

I love these tests. I would recommend taking them a couple of times, cause I know my answers tend to vary a little, or some answers are very borderline. I took it 3 times and got these results.

I(11) N(33) F(44) J(11)
E(1) N(33) F(67) J(11)
I(11) N(33) F(67) J(11)
I seem to be pretty consistent in the last three and a borderline introvert. I would say pretty accurate.

Would be either Teacher(extrovert) or Counselor(introvert)

I agree that the results we see posted are probably as much or more a result of being on a messageboard than being D/s. It would be interesting to break down results vs things like Real Time/Cyber or Dom/me/sub/switch.
