I think that if California feel off the map I would have beach front property.  But if it was swept away with California, then I guess I would go to Massawa, Eritreia (sometimes spelt Mitsawa - but that isn't what the sign on the city limits said).  I could subsist on shrimp and lobster and grouper (however it is spelled) and shark - all easy to find there.   I would get used to the heat and be skinny again.   Sounds great to me.

So the question is, if you and yours survived a disaster, but the area you call home is devestated, where would you go to start over?

Good choice but we do get earthquakes, flooding, and wildfires.

Hmmm. I could handle them, but I would hope the earthquakes would wait until I died to show back up .

The experts are saying that the Cascadia fault will probably let go sometime in the next 100 years.  That will be a nasty one.  The 93 quake in Portland was a nifty little 5.1.  Up to about a 6.0 and up, I kinda like them.  Over that is no fun at all.

And I made some pretty good 'day' money helping the rich folks get their possessions to higher ground in the 96 floods.

Well the one we had in the Seattle area about 3 yrs ago scared the heck out of me. I was on my puter in a chat room. I told everyone we were having an earthquake then crawled under my desk. I think it was 7.1 if I remember right.

I have lived in South Florida for my whole life, and have been looking at weather conditions throughout the  US, while contemplating re-location.  The west side of South Carolina isn't too cold, too hot, or too snowy, and is not hurricane, tornado, or earthquake vulnerable.  The cost of housing is amazingly low.  I am likely moving there later this year.

Oregon seems like a beautiful place, Rich. And yeah, I know what you mean about civilization coming unhinged lol.

Oregon is an exceptionally beautiful state...... with crystal clear mountain rivers, snow covered peaks, rain forests, and fabled swimming holes with old-time rope swings that take you high above the river and let ya go.

But if you are coming from a metropolitan area and you're used to an expanse of good food, night life and culture.... Portland is your only bet.

Naw, I'm a country bumpkin lol. I'd like to be close enough to Portland to visit Powell's Books, though.

HAR!  Let me tell ya....It wasn't long ago that I had the pleasure of visiting both Upshur and Red River counties. The folks I went to visit told me the area was extremely rural - I got there and thought to myself....if they think this is ''rural'' they need to come visit me in the part of Oregon I live...because they have very little understanding of the words ''country'' and ''rural'' - I live on the backside of the Illinois river valley, which ''Outside'' magazine commonly refers to as the most remote river drainage in the US outside of Alaska.

PS – Powells’ is definitely the best book store I've ever been to - And worth the stop if you're in town.
