I think studies have shown pretty conclusively that in general, women have superior social and communication skills compared to males.

I think studies have shown pretty conclusively that black is white and pi equals three.

Studies tend to show pretty conclusively whatever the people paying for the studies want them to show pretty conclusively.

LadyEllen -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 8:41:44 AM)

In that case then Harry - is there any point in any form of evidentially based debate? After all, if the results of all research are determined by the sponsor's will rather than analysis of the results, then its fairly useless for anything, including as a basis for modern society.

Instead we should abandon all research and scientific endeavour, no longer have trust in any form of technology as far back as the wheel (since if I sponsor research to say wheels dont work then it invalidates any knowledge to the contrary), and trust instead in superstition. And if we come to debate anything, then might is whats right, since there is no way of and no point in bringing reason and evidence to the table as they are discredited.

Problem is, that form of society was a miserable, poverty afflicted, plague and pestilience affected era of inadequate medicine and frequent starvation where war was the norm. If our ancestors had the sense to research better ways to live and rely on the results of that research to improve life for us, then how can it be that we could be foolish enough to not do the same?

I certainly take your point that sometimes research is unduly influenced by the researcher, but when the same results are obtained in repeat studies by independent researchers, such influence has to be discounted.

I also take your implied point that psychology and sociology (which have given rise to this research and results about male/female attributes) are not purely scientific in the way that physics is, but the use of Occam's Razor in understanding and dealing with the human condition is not practical and not even useful - the biochemical interaction of substances in the brain tells us nothing about a thought for instance.

Lastly, my comment seems to have been misunderstood as some form of male bashing - I can assure it was not intended that way. Studies have shown that male and female brains are not only built differently but also function differently. The differences in structure and function are what makes females generally better at communication - but those same differences are what makes males generally better at mathematics for instance. Its not to say that one is overall better than another, nor to say that males cannot communicate or women cant do mathematics - its just to say that in general there are some skills for which one gender or the other is generally better suited.

This is a tad bit off-topic, but in the realm of gender relations, I find it odd that many women like to pick and choose which statistics will apply to them.  For example, as an argument from proponents of placing women in authority, gals like to use statistical evidence that woman are superior in the realm of interpersonal relations, thus aiding better communication between employers and employees.  Now, the moment that a study points out a deficiency in women's abilities, such as inferiority in the realm of spatial abilities (a measured ability on most cognitive-skills assessment tests), fervent apologists of "equality, at all costs" are lightning-quick to cite "environmental conditioning" and "oppression" as a cause.

LadyEllen -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 9:12:44 AM)

Hi Treswank

I'm sorry you have come across such reactions. For me, I'm quite happy to admit to being awful at mathematics, physics and chemistry and the like, and not the best at sports which require acute spatial awareness. Though it might be due to environmental causes, I am far more inclined to believe these factors are simply because of who I am rather than what I do. I am though a good driver, which could be down to excessive practice and experience or possibly greater care on the road because I'm not so good at all that spatial awareness stuff!

At the same time I am seriously good at writing, comprehension, speaking and listening - again this could be environmental, but since I learned to speak early (as females generally do) compared to my brother a year younger than me in the same environment, and learned to read and write quickly and easily too by comparison with boys in my class in the same environment, I would tend to believe that this is connected to my female brain structure too.

Additionally, my college classmates' choices were symptomatic of this too. Whilst there could have been some societal influence over which courses the guys took compared to the gals, it does seem a very big coincidence that classes such as maths and chemistry were mainly male, whilst classes such as English, and any subject with a bias towards essay writing were mainly female. Meanwhile my German class was exclusively female and the physics class exclusively male.

Overall though its important to remember that in speaking of such gender distinctions, the prefix/suffix "in general" has to be used, and its also important to remember that just because it seems clear that one gender is better at something it does not invalidate the other; I acknowledge that males are better at spatial abilities for instance but it doesnt mean I am useless at that.

In America, I believe that the social climate is a little different.  For the past few years, there's been a sort of  masculine backlash against "patriarchy-blaming" feminists and "girl-power".

Oh reeeeaaaallllyyyyy??? you must live in a different America than I!

The reverse can also be said and I am sure has probably been debated on collarme thread at one point or other.

Yes please, but I would also request that we have two spaced rather far apart. I do not want my precious 4 legged ponies to have to listen to the obnoxious brayying of the two legged variety.[;)]

Awsome!

And btw, I also got the delicious humour in the creation of this thread. It actually made my day. Fits my sense of humour perfectly.

Way back when thats basically how the Amazon women thought.They would cut off on breast so they could use a bow and arrow better.

That's a common misconception. Not only is cutting one breast off very little help in archery, there's simply no proof that amazons ever did it, as a culture.

Apparantly you never watch the History channel or PBS.
I have seen many shows on this.I admire the Amazon Women as they fought right along side the males and often caught enemies off guard not expecting to see a Woman Warrior riding at them.
If there were no proof I dont think PBS would say it was true.

Theslavetrainer -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 1:58:57 PM)

I found this an interesting read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazons

But here it states that the amazons removed the right breast for javelin throwing, not archery. Which is more likely because spears, javelins and pikes were far easier to make and teach in use then archery back in that time period.

Hi Lotus

Can I ask please, whether there will be separate stable blocks for geldings? Its just that I wouldnt want my "pony" being bothered by breeding stallions....

I don't see us needing breeding stallions.  Now with the artificial insemination.  I have a medical research team working on  perfecting the application of inserting the fertilized ovum into the male doner's abdomen so he can carry the child to term and then we could do a c-section.  What could be more fatherly than to nurture his own precious seed :)  (care for a cigar?)  :) weg

What is the crieteria for the ones we geld?

Level -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 3:28:21 PM)

Humor. For there to be humor, someone has to say something funny. Didn't find any of that here. Just making assinine and derogatory statements about others and attaching a "I'm just kidding" label to it sure as hell does not make a funny.

And yeah, I'd feel the same if someone made a thread about women in the same way. Or blacks. Or people with MS.

Now, I'm not saying we can't have jokes about the above.... but again, just taking a dump on someone  does not equal funny.

LadyEllen -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 3:40:10 PM)

Hi Level

Yes - I'm afraid its degraded to that stage now. Mainly though I have to say as a result of misunderstanding contributions from males! If we're not going to be listened to then what can be expected?

How many women does it take to change a lightbulb?

None.  Women should all be dragged into the street, raped, and shot like dogs.

I'm just joking.

See, Level?  Funny!

I will agree with Level.  While I do not take offense at the OP, it was obviously barely veiled statement of opinion.  Granted, a rather ridiculous one, but the fact that it was meant seriously on some level was the only humour I saw in it.

I have no issues with that opinion, and there are plenty of feminazis out there who would support it, but I will not support it.

Seriously though, my joke was hilarious!

Yours,

benji

LadyEllen -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 3:43:38 PM)

Hi Lotus

Criteria for gelding? Well, I guess it depends on which criteria are decided to make them ponies!? I for one wouldnt want all of them kept in stables - after all, there's housework to be done, my car to be serviced, meals to be cooked and served, gardens to be maintained, and beds to be warmed........!

I think we might need an entirely new thread to discuss this sort of thing in order to plan for the revolution!

E

PS - now watch the fireworks fly LOL!

gooddogbenji -> RE: Utopia :) (8/3/2006 3:51:51 PM)

How many women does it take to change a lightbulb?

None, the bitch can cook in the dark.

How do you fix a broken dishwasher?

Hit the bitch and tell her to keep working.

What do you say to a woman with two black eyes?

Nothing.  You already told her twice.

What do you do if you see your wife running around the backyard, screaming?

Reload and shoot her again.

Why don't women need drivers licenses?

No roads between the kitchen and the bedroom.

Why do women dress in white at weddings?

So they match the rest of the kitchen.

Why don't women wear watches?

There's a clock on the stove.

Why do women have such small feet?

So the can stand closer to the sink.

What's wrong if your wife comes out of the kitchen to bitch at you?

Her leash broke.

What happens if you throw a grenade into the kitchen?

Well, the mess stays the same, but at least the bitching stops.

And yes, those were all from memory.

Yours,

benji
