I saw today that since 2003, 134 people have died from the bird flu worldwide. 134? Almost that many died here in California from our recent heat wave. Why are so many people afraid of this flu? I have to think this is another example of the press whipping up more hysteria. Hundreds just died in another recent tsunami, and it was ho hum as far as news coverage. But beware of the dreaded bird flu! I wonder if Airborne works on the bird flu?

The concern is that the flu will mutate and will eventually transfer from human to human and there would be no cure'.  That would be where the pandemic starts. 

I am not overly concerned, but I am not ruling out the possibility either.

You really tend not to read very much about a subject before you conclude that the press must be hyping something that isn't real.  You've pulled the same trick with global warming, too.  The fear isn't bird flu.  The fear is what will happen if a single organism somewhere (probably a pig) happens to be infected with both ordinary flu and bird flu at the same time.  That could produce a new strain of flu with the capability of killing millions.

Why don't you read more about it and stop leaping to conclusions?

And you tend to think because someone disagrees with you, they don't know what they are talking about. See, I look at both sides of the subject. As far as the bird flu, there are many scientists who believe as I do that there is not going to be a world wide epidemic where millions will die. And my point was, all you read and hear from the news media is beware of this new flu. It is hyped way past where it should be.. It has killed 134 people. Better to beware of driving to work. Do you remember the alar and apples scare? Does anyone know of anyone who died of alar poisoning? And how hyped was that? If you want believe there is a real problem with the bird flu, go for it. But don't begrudge my being a little more sceptical than you may be.

It's fairly new to the virus/germ world and the Meida is able to report it to gain ratings. In the medical supply industry, sales and request have gone up for bio mask.

I've noticed in adverstisment that bug spray commericals are now saying "Our spray will kill misquitos that may carry the West Nile Virurs"

Everyone in advertisment and sales like to promote the popularity off all the new diseases so they can Sale Sale SALE as much crap as possible. Then you have the entertainment industry making movies and shows off every little scare.

I don't get it...  you need a gun (or two or three) in case you need to someday "protect" yourself from the powerful (nuclear) government.... but when the possibility of bird flu being spread to millions arises, or when global warming is mentioned.... many who wholeheartedly defend their rights to arm themselves as protection, then scoff at real life threats that are likely among us.

So it's okay for thousands or millions to have a severe illness, so long as they don't die from it.  So all that "hype" about polio and leprosy and tuberculosis is just hogwash.  Geez, silly we are to vaccinate our children against measles, mumps and chickenpox.  I mean ALL kids used to get chickenpox and survive.

The next pandemic will occur at some time, the number of people affected will be dependent upon how quickly it is identified, there is no weight of informed science against this. The current bird flu possibility just happens to be the best known possible source for this next pendemic at the moment, for all we know the actual source is already mutating in a kansas school and is unrelated to the current strain the media are wrighting about. The "Bird flu" isn't a scare story it is one possibility amongst many for an event that will at some point occur and all we humans can do is to minimise the result. The media as always just sells the juciest angle on a story.  

I like the point made about protecting yourself from the virus with a hand gun............!

Throughout history  different illness have had a significant impact on the population. Whether it will be bird flu or some other plague this will definately occur sometime in the future. I think everyone should be personally responsible for having a disaster plan that includes natural, terrorist and biological events.

It's hard to know what hype you're talking about, because you haven't cited anything specific.  I mean, it's very easy to ridicule "hype" when you don't have to say what exactly you're ridiculing.  But, in any case, "scientists" neither believe nor disbelieve that there is going to be a pandemic that will kill millions because scientists aren't in business to state beliefs about the future.  That's for Mistress Cleo.  Any responsible scientist knows it's possible and knows that, under the right circumstances, it might be possible to save untold numbers of lives if the spread of the disease is monitored closely.  And that's why people are paying attention.  Yes, "it" has killed 134 people, and "it" is not the flu strain that people are worried about.  "It" is a strain that could BECOME the strain people are worried about.

Then I will worry when the "killer flu" actually materializes. My problem isn't with scientists, my problem is with the news media. All I remember hearing when the bird flu was a big story was, a new flu is coming that will kill millions, we have no vaccine, no one is doing anything, many of us will die, blah blah blah. Now three years on, I see that 134 people have died, as well as the story. Just as with mad cow disease, shark attacks, killer bees, apples and and allar, etc., (we even had a news report locally about the growing danger of seating in bleachers! What?)the news media loves to overhype all sorts of supposed dangers we should be afraid of. And my question was who else agreed with me.

So boycott the news media.  Take your money (or at least audinceship) elsewhere.

If everyone who is frustrated with them, stopped paying attention, they would soon change their attitude.  But, much like CM trainwreck threads (See Is this going a bit too far?) if we all go and watch and comment, nothing will change.  But the moment we ignore these fucktards (Both on CM and TV) they go away.

And if they don't, at least they're not being idiots on MY idiot box.
