I personally don't really have an opinion. As a society, and especially in this country we place our celebrities on pedestals. When we agree with their behaviour we idolize them and almost worship them as gods and goddesses. When they screw up and prove that they are like all of the rest of us only human we treat them as though they are the scum of the earth. To Mel I am nothing, no friend, relative, or business contact. I do not know the man on any personal level. I have no right to forgive or not. I have to right to place judgement on him. He is what he is and will deal with the repercussions of his actions like all of the rest of us. Granted yes, he has put himself out there and has given himself a platform of sorts that the public has bought into. Now he has screwed up. It does not really mean anything to me one way or another. Millions of people say stupid things, that is their problem not mine.

Just read the tirade.  Saw yer post too = )  You put that so perfectly well!!  i TOTALLY agree.  Not my problem, and i dun really care.

Bravo on da excellent words!

:: hands u a pepsi ::

oooooooo wait!!

As far as to whether or not he should be "ostracized",

damn judgemental ppl.  who gives anyone the right here to be the judge?  LOLOL

i want to ostracize EVERYONE on this forum from society, cos you all are a bunch of high and mighty, on a pedastool, dun even realise that yer all sick and perveted JUDGEMENTAL ppl.    Its ppl like those on THIS forum that screw up the world.  Sick bastards.  Thinking its okay to hit another and like it!  What are you teaching the younger generations?  WHAT is WRONG with you ppl.   It must be a mental defect.  Go get some help!

Well.......... not really.

But i think a few of you need to be judged to bring u back down to earth.

SusanofO -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 10:10:22 AM)

I think he will eventually be forgiven by the public because they may realize he's human, like we all are. That being said, his being a celebrity and all, I think he displayed horrendously bad judgment. I know he was drunk, which is even wose (but perhaps more understandable).

What  I can't figure out is why some celebrities seem to have so much credence in non-Hollywood celebrity areas, like politics, for example. I mean, many or most of them appear to know less than many random neighbors of mine, for instance, about such things. I cannot figure out why anyone would listen to them in any arena outside of moviedom.

Of course, this was an insult, so in a different category, but still...the only celebrities doing work outside of Hollywood I really give much credence to are those doing charity work, such as Bono. He's put his money where his mouth is, and also his time, several times over.

Rumtiger -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 10:36:06 AM)

Seeing as his father is one of those people who believes the holocaust never happened and was just a conspiracy developed by the Jews, i'm more of the idea of "drunk mouth, sober mind" in this case.

... So... do I think he is an anti-Semitic SOB? Of course - who else who use those as their insults?

Simple and effective analysis.

 I hope Bono never falls from *grace* in that case. He'd be much less of a decent chap if he got blindingly drunk and behaved like an utter moron, wouldn't he? despite his leanings and charity work.

Some of the most decent people I know have behaved abominably now and then. .....and so have I ( not that I have a saintly bone in my body).  I'm not waiting on forgiveness.........LOL

I, personally, always had the most superb judgement when drunk( or so it seemed at the time)..grin....

I wonder if those who say Mel Gibson should not be forgiven for his remarks feel the same about Jesse Jackson calling New York "hymie town", or Al Sharpton calling Jews "diamond merchants", or the continued slandering of Jews done by Minister Farahkan? Of course there is a double standard when it comes to a white man saying such things.
I feel that what Mel said is probably what he feels, but at least he gave a true and heartfelt apology. And he seems willing to back up his apology with action.

Rumtiger -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 12:29:29 PM)

I happen to think Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are assholes too, and do we really need to get started on Farahkan?

You really think so?  I think its just the standard, what do I need to say to try and get myself out of this crap.

Im more offended by drinking and driving than I am anything he said, much of which isn't released in the link Lotus provided. Calling people "f****** bleeps" when they are not present isn't going to kill anyone... drinking and driving kills people, like my cousin when she was 16 (we were the same age and she would be 38 today if it weren't for the drunk kid that hit her car).

Kedikat -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 1:24:06 PM)

If he was a friend of mine, I'd probably dump him.
If he makes a good movie, I'll watch it.
He's pretty much shown sober and drunk, his thoughts on Jews.

Forgive him? What difference would it make?

What Mel is supposed to have said:

TMZ has learned that Deputy Mee audiotaped the entire exchange between himself and Gibson, from the time of the traffic stop to the time Gibson was put in the patrol car, and that the tape fully corroborates the written report.

Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me."

The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
The deputy became alarmed as Gibson's tirade escalated, and called ahead for a sergeant to meet them when they arrived at the station. When they arrived, a sergeant began videotaping Gibson, who noticed the camera and then said, "What the f*** do you think you're doing?"

A law enforcement source says Gibson then noticed another female sergeant and yelled, "What do you think you're looking at, sugar tits?"

MHOO314 -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 2:44:18 PM)

Would you forgive it if it was the guy next door?

joyinslavery -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 2:49:45 PM)

Remember the last part of his move, 'Braveheart'?  That's what should happen.

Btw, those scenes were a little extreme for my tastes but there were certainly some fun bdsm elements working there.  Sadistic?  Certainly.  Public play?  Yup.  Dungeon play?  Outside but I think it qualifies.  Medical play?  Debatable.

I guess that's a subject for a different thread.

Again, I say if the apology is sincere, MH. Someone made a good point earlier, about how we place "stars" on pedestals, until they do something to remind us that they are human, and then we bury them underneath the poo-pile behind the stables.

Dan Le Batard wrote an excellent column for espn the magazine recently about how the athletes we love are the ones who say nothing controversial, who keep everything nice and neat. I think this applies to Hollyweird, too.

Hello jessica. Are you lost? [:D]

MHOO314 -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 3:20:21 PM)

Agreed. However, I wouldn't forgive the guy next door and I don't forgive this one--the size of the door IMHO has nothing to do with bad judgement.

juliaoceania -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 3:33:32 PM)

Did the officer survive said comment about her assets? My comment was that no matter what he said it isn't as bad as drinking and driving, a man his age should know better and that tells me he is an alcoholic. Frankly I am shocked that people are more put out by the drivel coming out his piehole then by his reckless disregard for human life while intoxicated. It says a lot about speech and our offense to what others say that we put a few racial comments up there with DRINKING AND DRIVING which kill 1000s every year.

Personally I would rather be called "sugar tits" than have some drunken asshole hit me with his car, but then again I have taken much verbal abuse from drunks in my life occupationally (former bartender cocktail waitress) to understand that drunks are usually assholes and say things they would not normally say.

I think that personally I can forgive many things in this world, including the kid that murdered my cousin with his immaturity, I can definitely forgive ignorant stereotyping racially charged comments coming from an incoherent middle aged alcoholic... And make no mistake, you go around drinking and driving at his age it means something much more sinister than when you do it in your 20s. He probably does it all the time. The man has a disease, and I hope he gets help. I have seen this disease kill others in the past.. people I love as a matter of fact.

Now as for what he said, I could be as put out by the sugar tits comment as Jews are by antisemitism, lord knows women are the victims of violence on a large scale in many societies.. far more women have been raped, murdered, and beaten than Jews in the history of the world.. But maybe it is just acceptable to get bent over antisemitism, but being derogatory toward my sex is just hunky dory. Perhaps someone should start a thread about that?

I have known a few people through my university who were sued by the Antideflamation League, how come they are the only group that will sue your ass for saying what you think about them? As far as those who think that is an antisemitic statement I refer you to my hero, Noam Chomsky, and yes he is an anthropologist and a Jew.

Level -> RE: Mel and Forgivness (8/5/2006 3:37:41 PM)

Hi julia [:D]. Just for clarification, I posted what I did because I thought you were curious as to what he said, I wasn't disputing your comments on the drunk driving being worse than his comments.

And Noam Chomsky? Oy vey.... [>:]
