All sorts of doom and gloom about various maybe's.
Oil and it's derivatives. Especially natural gas are coming to an end or a plateau in production. This affects all aspects of your life, global politics, war, food and sdo much more!!!!
Inform yourselves. Inform your leaders or vote in informed ones!!!
IT"S MAJOR BIG STUFF!!!!

EnglishDomNW -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 12:17:24 AM)

The first site I got from Google was http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/

Which starts with the appetising words

Dear Reader,

Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon.  Damn, what a day.

Kedikat -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 12:18:37 AM)

This is so overlooked. It is huge! it is right now! Things are happening globally over this. Wars, future wars. Whole countries economic and viable living aspects. Nobody seems to notice that a finite resource that we all survive on is getting tight.
It isn't just the cost of gasoline. Oil and it's products equal FOOD! medicine, and the cost of just about everything! Plastic is made of oil! Notice a bit of plastic in your life?
War? It's about oil now. Control of the richest oil areas.
Your children are set to fight for oil. It's the next big thing.
After that, water.
man...is Canada screwed. Hi GI. Me love you long time......

I'd just bought a years subscription to "Pessismists Monthly", that's thirty quid wasted.  Oh well, I knew it would be.

hehe, what's that? Tell me more.

I can laugh at almost anything, even this. but it's real.

EnglishDomNW -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 12:31:35 AM)

The site starts
"civilisation is ending"

and ends
"please buy our two books".

I'm fairly sure he wouldn't need $30 if civilisation was doomed.  He'd need at least $85. And possibly a space rocket.

Hey good news for you guys. In The LA Times today, there was an article about a company here that converts diesel cars to run on vegetable oil. We are saved!
Actually, I like the idea. The funny thing is, all the people driving the cars are breaking the law because they are running a car on a fuel that hasn't been approved by the government.
When vegetable oil is outlawed, only outlaws will drive with vegetable oil.

Burn food or eat it. Your choice. Ethanol is food in the gastank too.

Now that would be brilliant, you could toss some fish and chips in the tank, drive round for 15 minutes and put drive-thru's out of business

Oh hell, it's all free old news on the internet. If you look. He's hoping for idiots too. Easy formula. Most everything has the energy of cheap oil at it's base. Scarce oil equals almost everything more expensive, scarce. Including shipping books about scarce energy around. Don't buy it, learn about it. It's free and scarey.

lmao, just as well, with civilisation ending soon.

Kedikat -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 12:52:09 AM)

Amazing. So far just jokes and lame shit. It is the biggest thing you and the next couple generations will face.
Starvation, unemployment. You think crime and other shit is bad now? The draft will come into being for your kids to kill and die for oil and energy. Canada will be annexed or in bitter war with the US over energy very soon. Not 50 years from now. A decade or less will be the start of it. It is on now in the middle east. Bringing democracy to the middle east? Not likely. Not too likely for the last 50 years. IT"S THE OIL!.

EnglishDomNW -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 1:03:13 AM)

There are two reasons I'm joking about it

1) I just flat out don't believe it
2) Even if it were true, what could I possibly do to prevent it?

Well consider that even if the entire planet were composed of nothing but oil, we burn it and it runs out. Now consider that only a small portion of it contains a reasonable amount of oil and we have been burning it like crazy.
I work in the base of the oil industry, the end that looks for oil to drill for. In the past few decades we have found less every year. We burn more every year than we can find. End of story, soon end of cheap oil, soon after that end of useable oil. Get it? It doesn't replace itself. Burn a barrel of it and then wait a million years for a new one.

I don't care if you believe it really. I care if the people in power belive it and can come up with better ideas than to kill the people that are on top of it to steal it.

I care if they have plans to feed my neighbours before they come for my food and belongings. You might give a care to it if you have kids who will live through or die in the end of oil.

It is amazing how it is ignored. It's a fact. Oil is finite and we've used the best easy half or more of it. Even the giant oil companies know it, and a couple have even started saying it.

People have no idea how we have had such a cheap fun ride on oil, and it's about done.

Kedikat -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 2:36:20 AM)

I know it's a terrible burden of time and effort to click a few links on the internet. But the whole factual story is sitting there. Finite commodity, timeline and consumption. Duh!!!

Actually, that is the really cool part of the green fuels.  Both Federal law and the "eww, yuck" factor prohibit the use of reclaimed water (read, what comes out of the sewage treatment plants) from being used to irrigate food crops.  In areas like mine, water conservation has resulted in a lot of good farmland being left fallow.  No reason we can't use the icky water to grow our own fuel supply though.

SirKenin -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 9:08:17 AM)

I think this talk has been going on for years and years.  I do believe it, and I attribute it largely to the American's ignorance on the matter.  Take a close look at the automotive industry.  Honda and Toyota are developing more economic cars.  They are developing hybrids.  Then look at Daimler Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.  What are they pumping out?  Hummers.  Hemis.  Cadillac SUVs.  Lincolns and Lincoln Navigators.  Huge Northstar V8s.  Gas guzzling pigs.  The Americans are snapping them up like there is no tomorrow.  There is an SUV craze.  Nobody cares.

Fortunately the American government has been stepping up to the plate.  They have developed hydrogen technology, and as we speak are developing a way to dispense it.  I have seen some pictures of it and read a little bit about it.  There is hope yet.

Hydrogen.  Ye-eah.  Wasn't that what the Hindenburg was full of???

Not to mention that the electricity needed to produce it would mean a lot more nuclear plants.  How evironmentally helpful is that?
