Status: offline 		I would say I like music, I have a fair sized collection and see alot of bands live but I'd be lying if I said it was my passion in life.

Being English I like English bands Doves, Paul Weller, Groove Armada, Richard Hawley, Guillemots, British Sea Power, Chemical Brothers - all around today.

In terms of the English bands from past decades - never really understood the pull of The Beatles (to me their music is just everyday pop - not exactly plumbing the depths of human experience) - Cat Stevens has far more to offer than The Beatles ever did IMO.

80s Primal Scream, The Jam, Police, The Smiths.

American - Marvin Gaye, George Benson, Jill Scott, Vhs or Beta, Queens of the Stone Age (reasonable when they step out of their "macho" mode).

Canadian - Arcade Fire

French - Daft Punk

Aussie - Youth Group (rubbish name for a band but debut album was well worth a listen).

To the Lady who mentioned Lemon Jelly, feel free to expand on their appeal.

I have around 1000+ Lps, about 1000+ CDs, perhaps 500 7" vinyl singles, etc. Between myself and some friends we agreed to use the same method of digital ripping (EAC to Lame VBR MP3s) and storage (400 GB hard drives) and pooled our respective music collections into one vast collection we call "MusicServer00." The last time everything was updated it weighed in at over 225 GB of data comprised of over 3,000 directories themselves containing over 34,800 files. This is approx. 9 months or more of music if you listened to it 24/7 without any interruption. Effectively, it is a music store's worth of music (maybe more) on a single hard drive.

Any piece of junk computer that can run fairly quietly, handle a 7.1 soundcard, and to which a 7.1 speaker system can be attached can run the needed software to network connect to the MusicServer00. Sometimes you can get usable computers as hand-me-downs, the soundcards and speakers will run an additional $150 per location. you can even run systems from inside closets or behind walls and into other rooms via wireless interface gear like keyboard and gyro based pointers - all you really need in the room playing the music is a monitor and the speakers themselves.

Additionally, any system on the network can run minimal sound quality out of 2 speakers - this would include any POS computer and even laptops. In my home I have 3 7.1 setups and plans for 3 other 2 speaker locations via a wired gigabit network.

This is an ongoing thing as ripping rare vinyl is a pain in the ass but obviously worth it if you are into it. This part requires a decent sound card and a traditional stereo with a solid turntable, cartridge and needle. Maybe even a ground loop filter. You must also have some minimal sound editing software that can handle sufficient plug-ins to clean the sound of old vinyl records.

It's taking time but soon I shall have my beloved jazz and 50's lounge music collections in all digital format.

"Rites of Spring" is a favorite of mine as well ... heck I was finally sold on the comic "Lost Girls" when I read that the climax (cough) of the story will take place in the middle of the famous riot, and that the creators had researched the reconstruction of the ballet which was done several years back.

Romantic music grates on my nerves, though I do like baroque, especially when played lushly by someone like Pablo Casals.

You have listed my Platonic ideal rendition of "Lush Life," but I tend to think of it as Johnny Hartman's more than John Coltrane's. Not that I have any problem with Coltrane, we played "A Love Supreme" at my wedding. Free jazz is probably my favorite music in the world, though it's roundly hated in most households.

Status: offline 		      My first love is Pink Floyd (internet rumor that Johhny Depp wil play Syd Barrett in an upcoming movie). 

       I like music that is both intelligent and angry.  My father accuses me of discussing heavy metal as if it were a legitimate art form.  There are probably country performers I would really enjoy but the genre as a whole turns me off.  Rap as a vocal style meshes very nicely with both metal and reggae but I don't care for hip-hop.

Status: offline 		I love music, love love LOVE!! I cannot carry a tune to save my life, don't play any instruments competently. I would never say I have a favourite or any genre that I totally hate. What I listen to depends on the mood of the moment. A typical day could start with Norah Jones, go thru any variety that could include classical, classic country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, any sort of rock.......you name it and I have a representative CD. Oddly enough I might go a day with no music, prefering as much silence as possible.

Status: offline 		I also love music. There is music playing at my place from the moment the first person gets up till the last person heads to bed, and sometimes it even plays round the clock.
As to what I listen to, just about anything, I am 1 mp3 short of 400 hours of music on my computer, and have a big pile of CDs as well.
Some of my favourites (in no particular order) are Steve Earle, Cowboy Junkies, Be Good Tanyas, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, The Pogues, Flogging Molly, Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, The Waterboys, Apocalyptica, Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, Barenaked Ladies, Jenny Gear, Indigo Girls, Tom Petty, Counting Crows, Albinoni, Dixie Chicks, Grateful Dead, Mia Dyson (awesome voice on her), Marianne Faithful, King Krimson/Robert Fripp, Graet Big Sea, June Tabor, Kate Rusby, Lhasa de Sela, Mazzy Star, Talking Heads/David Byrne, System of a Down, Richard Thompson, Tonio K, & Tom Waites.

I left out those bands who I only like 2-3 songs of.

Status: offline 		What a great list, Arpig.  I saw Counting Crows when they were debuting their first CD.  A great show. 

My tastes in music are all over the board.  I love "real" jazz (not the Kenny G "jazz lite schtuff) - John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, Nancy Wilson, Erroll Garner, to name a few.  I love Bossa Nova, Ragtime, and Boogie Woogie (thanks to Dad).  I love the operatic voices of Maria Callas and Monsterrat Caballe'.  But I also love OLD country - Waylon, Willie, Merle, Hank, and Charlie.  (Can't get into "new" country at all).  Then there's classical - I love baroque - Bach, Correlli, even Vivaldi's Four Seasons, as over played as it is, is effective.  My favorite classical composer however, is Chopin, but that's for nostaglic reasons.  Then again, give me rock & roll any day.  From Southern rock with Skynerd to Led Zepplin, to Neil Young (I'm in love with Neil) to Pink Floyd... I'm all over the map.  The only music I can't get into is new country (unless we're talking the blue grass styles of Nickle Creek and Alison Krauss) head banging metal, and rap.  Oh and I love music from various countries.  I'm partial to Flamenco, because I was brought up with it and it's beautiful.  But I love arabic and Indian music, also.

Just call me Sybil.

Oh sorry if I wasn’t clear but I mean specifically the soundtrack CD for the movie O Brother Where Art Thou.  It does repeat one song (I am a man of constant sorrow) a few times with different interpretations but it also has a bunch of other good music.  I only dabble in bluegrass so I liked it as a “sampler” so to speak.

Agreed! I love his rendition of "On Broadway".

Doesn't he have an album where he plays with a big band? I want to say it's Basie, but I don't think that's right.

It was the Count Basie Orchestra.  Benson called it the Big Boss Band.  Basie himself died in 1984.

It would be entertaining enough with just the music from all over the world, but some if it is hybrids you would never expect -- like Lebanese salsa, Turkish rap, and Indian reggae. It sure beats MTV.

My only exception is gangsta rap, but if you take away some of the redundant cuss words, it is poetry.

I agree - I find it refreshing.  Are you familiar with the Putamayo label?  They carry a lot of Cuban, Brazilian, American Indian and other beats.

The modem in my PC.
My car radio, it  wont lock on to new stations
The top box that allows me to receive digital TV.

So me no fan of thunderstorms then !

If I totally disagreed with all your posts and replies I could gloat. But I can't.
And I so dig your covert ops pic.
Coincidentally a friend called me up to inquire about her dead PC. Lightning stikes again I fear. She was powered down, so likely just the power supply.
Is it the radio? Or are you just in a rut ? :)
Get a whack of surge supressers and maybe some tinfoil under that touque. ( Touque is canadian for that black knitted hat ) in case you that isn't common lingo there.
Hmmmmm I'd like to see you get down to " I'm a soul man" in the duds of your pic. It would be cool. :) Or maybe even Peter Gun.
Hope the toys aren't too badly fried.
