I was at the Eye Dr's one time about 10 years ago at the V.A.
The Dr. noted that I had blue eyes and told me; "You should ALWAYS wear a good pair of sunglasses when you're outside if you have blue eyes."
I didn't question him but told him that I usually do wear sunglasses outside.
Today I was out in the sun without my sunglasses for about half an hour and came inside and within ten minutes had a headache and remembered that I didn't wear my sunglasses.
Two aspirin and the headache was gone in about half an hour.
Has anyone heard of this neccessity for blue-eyed people to wear sunglasses before?
I definately hurt if I (don't) wear them!
Has your Dr. told you this?
Maybe some of the Nurses in here will know.

My eyes aren't blue, they are green, but I have to wear sunglasses even in the winter.  If I dont wear them, I get headaches too.

Both my baby and I have blue eyes and wear sunglasses outdoors always, I take it a step further and wear them quite often indoors too. My eyes are very light blue and extremely sensitive to light, even overhead fluorescents can give me a bad headache.

I have brown eyes and wear the darkest sunglasses I can get a hold of. My eyes are very light sensitive, but I suspect its due to some of the medication that I take.
Some of them will make your eyes sensitive.

Mine are a very light green-hazel.  I never go without sun glasses. I can't tolerate the sun at all.

My eyes are hazel.  And they dont adjust normally to light, so I have to wear sunglasses all the time. If not, I am royally screwed.  If I am out in the sun too long, I will be unable to see indoors for most of the day. My eyes just dnt readjust.  I have to wear sunglasses intoa  theater if i want to see amovie until the lights go down or i wont be ablet o see well.. Tis a pain

So, this (is) a problem for other people too then?
I've turned my vehicle around and headed home before to get my glasses that I forgot.
I try to keep 2-3 pairs of sunglasses around at all times.

I have hazel eyes green with the gold star-burst effect.

I cant stand sunglasses. I even tried prescriptions one. Maybe I am just a natural squinter.

I also have very bad night vision problems. I am always told my new prescription will take care of that, but they never do.

One should always use suglasses for UV protection. Problem is you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you do use them you become more dependant on them because you become more suseptable to light induced headaches. If you don't use them your eyes tend to go bad earlier then normal. At least this is what my eye doc tells me. I wear sunglasses even more regualrly now that I live at a high elevation. Seems one is doomed no matter what. LOL

Popeye,

Definitely not alone in this. I have very light blue eyes, almost silver. My GP told me years ago that I shouldn't ever go outside without sunglasses. As a little kid I would get horrible migraine like headaches from being outside in the sun after 10 or 15 minutes. I had to have optometrists take child size glasses and tint the non prescriptive lenses darkly in order to find glasses I could wear back then. The explanation being that blue eyes have less pigmentation thus less protection from the UV rays. I'm still very sensitive but not as terribly as when I was young.  I've got a great optometrist now and I love the new lenses that darken automatically when exposed to light. Anybody else that has this type of sensitivity I can't recommend them enough. They are awesome. Before that I had at least a dozen pair scattered everywhere.

I am not a fan of sunglasses but I wear them more as I get older. My eyes are a very light blue.  I will wear them if outside for period of time and in the car, but I do not wear them constantly

I have light hazel eyes, sometimes yellow. I too have to wear sunglasses during the day (I own several pair and have them at work, home and in the car).

There even comes a time when I wear them while driving on the freeway. The on coming traffic gives me headaches.

Funny, it never bothered me when I was younger but in my twenties and in the Navy in the Meditterainian the glare off the water on a sunny day was noticable.
After I was older and in the Coast Guard and we'd be in the Carribean doing drug patrols or other things the glare off that water was killer and I had no choice but to wear sunglasses like everyone else aboard ship.
I was in Navigation Division and had to look into Radar sets during the day to take plots on landmarks and that would mess your eyes up as during the day they have a big rubber enclosure over the radar scopes so you could see the information clearly.
Then back out onto the bridge wing to take another fix on another instrument and right back into the glare again.
And at dawn and dusk we'd use an instrument called a sextant to measure the declination of certain stars to get navigational plots and we'd be squinting all the time!
