Why do people think that you shouldn't go into a forum just because of your orientation?

I think all discussions are better when you have more perspectives and I think it's best when people of all orientations post on them.  Whether it's asking a question, responding to a question or just reading- I hope people just enjoy the entire board and don't let their orientations block them.

Bearlee -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 2:53:18 PM)

I couldn't agree more!!!

I have many times learned something new from the person with experiences more in line with who I am, rather than the one with the orientation to whom I directed the question.

It's all good!!!

Very much agreed.  I know I post in the "Ask a Master" thread sometimes.  If a question catches my eye and I have something to say, I figure I might as well say it. ~Butterfly

juliaoceania -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:05:37 PM)

I have found most of the time when people object to someone coming in and posting in a forum based on this it is because they do not like the opinion of the "outsider" that posted.

LaTigresse -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:06:45 PM)

I agree, I think it is silliness. I never pay attention to how a thread is geared as far as orientation, except for the gor thread. As a general rule they seem to not care for those that are not gor being around and thats cool, whatever floats their boat. I have learned things of value from just about every thread type, some more than others.

LotusSong -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:21:14 PM)

When you have done something long enough.. you know what interests you.

I'm not a switch.. I'm not a bi-sexuaL.. I'm not submissive.. so I just don't go there.

For example.. what I have to say about switching..nobody wants to hear.  And I have heard it all before.  I also feel there should be places just for the other ..what-have-yous.. to speak thier mind in private.

I'm not a voyer in that regard. I don't feel I need to be in everybody's business. I've been on several boards over the years and the threads will repeat.. it's pretty predictable. So I leave it for each newby to find themselves. I give them their own thrill of discovery. They won't listen anyway :/

And really, LA, why would you care anyhow?

juliaoceania -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:26:55 PM)

I think that we do this because subs ask masters and masters ask subs things. The title is Ask a Sub/Master/Mistress/switch.. not Submissive Forum or Switch Forum. It is meant to get ideas and insight from a different perspective, not voyeuristic. We contribute as we deem we have something to share.

LaTigresse -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:29:21 PM)

Sooooooo, does that mean you neverrrrrrrr go into the Master thread, or the Submissive thread orrrrrrrrrr.........?[:D]

bandit25 -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:33:50 PM)

Yeah, I go by the title of the thread, not what forum it's in.  Whatever catches my eye.

NastyDaddy -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:44:55 PM)

Surely it's not a "do as I say not as I do thing"..... after all it's only a bad $10 keyboard and a bad $5 mouse... each with their own immense sentimental value.... and agendas, totally innocent and nothing even remotely associated with sinister or double standards. Those damn bad peripherals only caused three forays into Ask A Switch in the last month or so... purely accidental of course, likely weather related... possibly along the lines of partly cloudy.

Sounds like a rather clique'ish attempt to occupy "sacred virtual ground"....

The board guidelines used to specifically state any member can reply to any thread in any forum, there were no divisions as such.

LotusSong -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 3:50:14 PM)

I do my best not to :)  I'm waaaay too opinionated...  and judgemental.. and jaded...and ..knowledgable.....

MrDiscipline44 -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 4:04:45 PM)

I agree with Lotus on this one. There isn't a discussion in the Ask a Mistress forum that interests me so I don't go there and if it's an open question for everyone then just post it to the General forum.

MistressMaamNH -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 4:24:01 PM)

Thing is..I never go into the forum boards specifically. The #lobby chatroom has recent forum posts scrolling by. So when I'm in the room, I read what's being said on posts, if something catches My interest, I'll click the link. It's not until after it's posted, if then, that I see where the original post was centered.

I'm full of opinions on ALL sorts of things...where the thread begins, is not where it necessarily stays. Threads get hijacked all the time....and those aforementioned opinions..well..I just like to spread the wealth hehehe

Agree too.  ... ... although I think when new some are hesitant to venture into area's they dont think they fit into.  I know I did, hell I was real hesitant to put a toe into the Gorean board way back when.  But that was way back, and now I'll add my .02 anywhere.

I guess I'm guilty of segregation, I will only read something in "Ask a Mistress" if someone has spurred me on (no pun intended). Not a phobia or anything...but I have heard from reliable sources how they are (lol...weg).

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 5:19:00 PM)

I comment whenever im moved to. I dont actually pay much attention to where the subject is listed, but I watch the little scroller on the side, see something interesting and toss in my 2 cents. If someone doesnt want to read my opinion, then they can skip my entry.

Well I understand not going to a forum because there's rarely something that interests you, or you really don't think you have much to add.  I rarely go into the mistress forums myself, sporadically go into the gorean and stupid stuff forums.

But I would hope it's just due to people's personal tastes and how they want to spend their forum time- not because they feel they SHOULDN'T based on their orientations.

SweetSarijane -> RE: Forum Divisions (8/22/2006 8:31:00 PM)

When I first found the forums, I was really, really new to using them and I thought the way they were set up that you weren't supposed to answer a question directed at the orientation you weren't, but could post a thread there asking a question or for feedback. Maybe some of the ones newly coming in believe that too. I've listened (read) observed and learned since then thankfully <smile>.

As to those who tell someone they can't post in a section because that's not their orientation, maybe some are new and some just being jerks.

Edited to add: For myself, I don't choose threads by the section they're in. I read and/or respond to what threads interest me no matter their location in the forums.
