I don't believe in the psychic but I don't discount people's experiences, I just think there are rational and scientific explanations. I don't think anything breaks the laws of physics but we just have a lot still to learn about natural physics which leads many people to put inexplicable experiences down to psychic phenomena.

I saw an interesting documentary once on the BBC. An English couple in the South East of England who lived in an old house several hundred years old started to get messages on their computer screen written in middle English. This went on for several weeks and couldn't find out where these messages were coming from, they even appeared when they disconnected the computer from the internet. The messages started out being somewhat curious about a light box the apparent author had found in his home and then went on to diesribe his life. Over the weeks the messages became more agitated and saying he had to hide the light box because people had found out about it. Eventually the messages stopped. The couple had saved the messages and got them studied by language experts who said the messages were written in middle English with all the variantions expected and the only alterations of middle English were where a modern keyboard would not allow the proper middle English to be written. The couple then researched the person who claimed to have been sending the messgaes. They found he had lived in their house in the late16th century and much of how he described his life would be consistent with the time he lived though there was little record of the man, there was a record of him having been been arrested for devil worship.

At 94% you should have no trouble at all passing the Randi test and collecting the million dollar prize. If you are opposed to using it for profit, there are thousands of worthy causes that could use a million dollar donation.

Why settle for a mere million dollars and have to put up with all the Randi test formalities?

If I were a 'gifted person', especially with a 90+ percent rate for locating missing persons, there's no doubt I would lay off the lower-end crowd and go for the bigger big bucks... locate Osama Bin Laden for the cool 50 million, and then why not roll a deuce and locate Osama's bitch fat guy with the beard.... Sharkweary what's his name... the one that wears those birth control glasses, for another cool 25 mil... after those two fat turkeys, all the other upstart'ish bad mutherfuckers would want to pay me to not think about them...

The easiest way to spot a fake pychic is when they want you to call them... if they were really psychic they'd be calling you now wouldn't they!

Oh hell yes....hairs standing on end...feels like every nerve in your body is sparking

Calandra -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/23/2006 2:29:44 AM)

I've been dealing with a very very assertive departed one this week. Shaking me in my sleep, waking me just as I get into a deeper sleep, so I wake up startled (I sleep in a waterbed and the whole damned thing is shaking) I'm supposed to deliver a message, but the spirit isn't being extremely clear about WHO the fricking recipient is...

I think I know now, but I'm exhausted and likely to tell the recipient to call off their damned brother!!!!

Forgive me, I know I'm being harsh, but I'm frustrated and tired

SavageFaerie -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/23/2006 2:30:34 AM)

when I was young one night while my siblings and I was staying at my grandmother...I had a dream...really weird one...I woke up severals minutes before my little sister. I was telling them about my dream and my little sister spoke up and finished it....it was the exact same dream...moment by moment.

SusanofO -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/23/2006 2:42:29 AM)

I believe in it. I can't prove it exists, but it cannot be disproved to exist, either.

My paternal grandmother had a dream her father would be run over and killed by a model-T Ford while he was going for his Sunday walk. She told him about it, and he laughed it off, and went anyway. And - it happened, and he died as a result of the accident. She had psychic dreams throughout her life, and said she wished sometimes, they would just go away, because they were usually foretelling unhappy things. I myself can sometimes guess who is calling on the phone (without Caller ID) - but I think many people can do that.

Shit happens. Nothing is infallible. Some will believe some will not, its kind of like religion. We simply do not know enough about the psychic world to make concrete judgement calls. Its kind of like gravity, how long ago was it that humans had no idea that gravity existed or even what it was? But we now know it is there and we have some understanding of how it works.

I personally believe in psyhic phenomena, why? I've experienced it first hand. Can I read people's minds? Not all the time but sometimes yes I can. Can I sense things before they happen, sometimes yes. Would I say it would works every single time if I tried to make it happen? Nope because I don't TRY to make it happen. It is something that just does.

I will share that I have precognitive dreams, which I have had all my life. I pushed them away and dismissed them as "coincidence" because I just could not get my intellect to agree with my intuition. I had an interest in these things, but refused to believe that I had this "gift" (at times it seemed like a curse). I then had a dream while napping one day, I will not relate the specifics of the dream, but it was very disturbing though and it stuck with me heavily all afternoon. A friend messaged me on the computer and I related the dream to her in great detail because I felt "compelled" to. Two weeks went by and then September 11th happened, my friend instantly recognized my dream as a warning because of the context of it.

I would not watch the coverage of Sept 11th for a full year. I avoided all photos of it. I quit watching TV. On the year anniversary of the event I watched a slide show of the event, and something made sense to me out of my dream that never made sense to me before, in my dream I was up in a skyscraper and when I looked out the window there was nothing but white blankness. I realized that was the view some people must have had before the building came down.

This experience haunted me deeply, and it made it extremely difficult to concentrate and focus. I felt very raw for a long time. It was like being hit over the head with this "ability" and like flood gates opened up as  ihad a series of wild precognitive dreams. I worked very hard through meditiation to stop them as they disturbed me and hurt me on a spiritual level. I still do not know why I would have dreams like this, why when there was nothing I could do about it.... I had no one to talk to about it either.

Juliaoceania

I had a vision of the events of 9/11 as well prior to it happening and was quite freaked out as well.  I rarely relate it to others.  On the morning it occured, I was in a daze because I couldn't believe how similar to my vision and what happened were the same.  I rarely mention it because I'm sure to most it just sounds to wierd and I can't really explain much about that vision, I just remember seeing planes intentionally crashing  into tall buildings in the city.

I'm sure there are explainations for most phenomena and someday as with many things answers will come, maybe not in my life time.  We are a determined species always needing answers leaving no stone unturned, so some brilliant mind will likely connect the dots with in the next trillion years.  [:)]

For people sincerely interested in the history of research in this field, I definitely recommend these sources:

The Limits of Influence: Psychokinesis and the Philosophy of Science. Revised Edition. Lanham, New York, London: University Press of America (1997).

ESP and Psychokinesis: A Philosophical Examination. Revised Edition. Brown Walker Press (2002) Available in paperback and instant electronic (PDF) editions.

Immortal Remains: The Evidence for Life After Death   Roman & Littlefield (2003) Available in cloth bound and paperback.

As a personal plug, they are all authored by my former college advisor, Dr. Stephen Braude, who is a past president of the American Parapsychological Association and has done decades of research and examination of not only psychic phenomena, but how it has been perceived and researched itself.  The books are heavy on the philosophy side, but well worth the read.

I also document my psychic experiences. I have often told people around me about dreams or "feelings" that I've had only to have THEM come to me later and remind me that I'd related it to them.

I dream all the time, but when I'm having a psychic dream it's almost as if every nerve in my body tingles - Thats when I know that it's important, and not just an every day occurence.

I sense spirits. Departed people and pets, guardian angels, or simply vibration and energy fields that have some form of cognizance. My brain picks up on it, and I cannot tune it out.

Does anyone else experience psychic phenomena with that nerve tingling or with other sensations that alert you that something spiritual is happening?

I can tell a precog dream from another type of dream, I do not tingle, but they have a different quality to them.

I've had things disappear & reappear, sometimes years later. I had a ghost sign for a Fed-Ex delivery, [her signature was shown to me electronicaly].I've had the temperature in a room drop 30 degrees suddenly & the dogs cower in terror under the table. I've had visitation dreams from a ghost [woman in her 30's] who tells me she's a ghost but a "good ghost", although there are evil ones around. I had a civil war musket [verified authentic] appear leaning in the corner of the kitchen one day.
I could go on, but you get the idea.

That's one of my interests!  Someday I would love to go on a haunted tour of the states.  Got any pictures of ghosts, Peter?
****************************************************
I've dabbled in the metaphysical since the mid 70's.  I've done astrology, tarot card reading and psychometry.  I found that those are just portals. When I was laying out a chart to read.. I realized I wasn't reading the  astrological interpretations of the chart..but more what the person I was reading needed to know. The same thing happened with the Tarot cards.  So now.. I'm pretty good without the props :)

StrongButKind -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/24/2006 8:15:23 PM)

For those of you with psychic abilities -- do you have any insight into why any credible blinded test of ability to read minds, foresee the future, and similar things has failed? Are these gifts limited when they're being tested? Are the practitioners offended at being tested in this manner? I want to believe, but when all credible evidence runs to the contrary and all evidence is unverifiable anecdote, I have trouble. Not that it's your job to convince me, but I wonder, as people with these abilities, if you have any ideas as to why these abilities can't be confirmed objectively? Thanks!

juliaoceania -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/24/2006 9:56:42 PM)

I think that they serve a specific purpose of survival like any other aspect of our physical being. I think that telepathy is a form of communication between people that are bonded in some way. I do not think that people that have no connection would ever be able to be tested for physic ability reliably. It doesn't matter to me whether or not they can test for it... it has happened to me enough in my lifetime that it doesn't need scientific validation.

When my son was very little the connection between our minds seemed unbelievable to me. I knew when he was up to no good, he would say things I was going to say, he would know what I was going to do before I did it, and likewise. I have never been so connected to anyone as I am him. I believe that mothers that are closely connected with their children have a 6th sense regarding them. They can "feel" when they are in trouble. It would make sense that those with this sense would be more successful at parenting than those completely without it, Our offspring would survive, someone without it, well their offspring wouldn't. How could you test for energy that is connecting two people like this?

I am certain we have all had the experience of someone calling to us unconsiously, so we feel compelled to call them, or vice versa... it is hard to test for this because the test would lack urgency between the people being tested. In other words, the heart has to be involved to trigger the 6th sense, we cannot will it.

Vendaval -> RE: Psychic Phenomena (8/24/2006 11:05:47 PM)

Definately.  Sometimes the hairs raise on the back of my neck
and arms or my arms and hands tingle or go numb.  Some
folks call this "psychic rain".  I am also aware of auras and healing energy,
able to sense the healing ability in a person and feel a strong warmth when
healing energy is flowing.  I had intersting experiences when having acupuncture
treatments for a neck injury.  I would see colors and patterns with my eyes closed.

A room or a person with nasty, negative energy feels cold and
prickly, sometimes has a foul odor.  Sometimes pure fear and/or
anger is palatable in a place where something really bad has
happened.
