Ok...here is the post for those real folks who do hold down a job and keep this or other countries moving along.

I am currently looking into going back to college to get a teaching degree.. I want to teach elementary kids.

<edited to correct the erroneous thought that this is a US only website>
let the flagellations begin!

I admire your desire to go back to school for something very worthwhile!

Me? I found a way to get out of working for a living. Okay, first I had to get a job with good pay and great benefits and pay into a disability insurance policy. Then - and this is the tricky part - I had to start an abscess growing in my brain and let it increase in size to the point of near paralysis before letting any doctors have a look at me. After accomplishing that, I had to undergo some tricky surgery, go through weeks and weeks of rehab and medication, and develop a really flakey short-term memory - and prove that because of the memory problems I could no longer do my work.

I work. I am away from home from 7AM to 7PM Monday thru Friday for this job. It is a luxury when I get home by 6. It's not a bad job, I have far too much free time on my hands and I hate not being busy.
I am in the process of purchasing a building and foolishly attempting the business of becoming self employed again after many years of working for others. I need more of a challenge than I have now.

I work 12 hours days... My job sucks... I'm a drone at a factory. I'm 27 and have had 29 jobs in my life. Why? Move from one crappy job to another... But here's how all of you can help... If everyone sends me a dollar.... Hehehe. Kitty, good luck! I'm in the process of going back to school myself... um... soon.

Getting an education is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself.  And educating other people is one of the best things you can do for them.  Most people work.  It is easy to get into a subculture of people who do not, however.  Many handicapped and disabled people work and are independent.  I have worked since I was 14.  I have epilepsy, other serious medical conditions, a psychiatric disorder and am fully disabled according to My neorologist, psychiatrist and MD.  They ask Me weekly why I do not fill out the paperwork, because they will all verify My conditions.  I will not go on SSDI unless I ever become fully incapacitated, even tho I have been paying double into it for 22 years as a self-employed person and business owner.  At times, I am fully incapacitated but I recover and get My ass back to work like a responsible adult.  If I can type in this Forum, speak, have relationships, etc. I can earn some money doing something.  I became self-employed so I could control My work environment and manage My disabilities better.  I supported My brother while He went to college, and worked fulltime while I went to school.  It is very, very hard for Me to work especially when having problems with my seizure disorder.  I live alone now and that is very difficult but it is not impossible.  Nothing is impossible.  We are not entitled to live off of other people.  I know, meet, read of and see people every day much more able then myself who do not work and accept MY tax dollars while I struggle to pay My own way and theirs.  I think it would be better for THEM and better for society if they were forced to be more independent.  Their children grow up with a sense of entitlement and lack of coping skills.  It does not make for strong individuals or a strong society.  It sets a bad example for the disabled and the abled.

Be blessed,
Goddess

I love working and am so happy I've found somthing again for my non degreed butt to do.  Although, if I can swing it even at this ripe old age I'm going back to School too and finish that moldy degree.

kitty: My mother was an elementary school teacher, and a music teacher, for many years and she loved it! Her ex-students used to come up to her in places like malls and grocery stores, years later, and thank her for being such an inspiring teacher.

She really loved it. I think some people really just are born to be teachers, so if you think you are, and want to do it, then  go for it and good luck!

I am not currently working. My spouse died last February, and I am working on things like getting my house ready to sell. I do an above average amount of volunteer work with abused and neglected kids, and for another place. I would love to find a new career, my old one was market research analyst, and housewife. I was thinking of selling real estate, but the market is already starting to crash, so I am thinking "no" on that, for now.

I will work at any job if I need money. I've had some wonderful jobs, and some jobs that simply paid the bills. I've been working since I was 13 years old, with the exception of 6 years when I was married. It's kind of nice to have time to figure out now what my next step should be - I am thinking that one over, still. Good luck, and have fun!

- Susan

I've worked full-time for most of my adult life.  (Was home for 3 years when my kids were babies)

To the OP, congrats on going back to school!  I got my associate's degree in 1989, and in a few days, I'm starting classes to finish my bachelor's degree.  My son just got his, my sister will have hers in a few months, my employer pays my tuition and books.....it's time   Good luck to you!

Well, I work, though I dont make as much as I think I should be paid. The hours are fairly good, and I am being cinsidered for a promotion...
And if that goes well *cross fingers* I am going to be able to transfer ANYWHERE I want with th emanagement position... which means my relocation plans will go much much smoother.

I haven't worked since moving in with my Dom six months ago. I did get my GED and will be starting college next month. I plan to go to school for two years and then open my own business. I will also work some part time jobs during the two years, mainly for research for my own business. I plan to sell coffee to college students.
