Compatability. Without it, nothing else matters.

I was wondering if anybody would get to this one.  Compatability is definitely number one.

This is not fair, picking one is just not fair.

So ethics I guess would be my answer

Communication. With communication you learn if they have the other important traits - loyalty, honesty, self discipline, a willing heart, and intelligence.

Exactly as written.

Compatability isn't a trait, it is a blanket condition taking all the traits combined. If enough of their traits are suitable then the person may well be compatable.

I cannot pick just one. There are four that are, for me, vital and equal in importance.

Intelligence
Honesty
Integrity
Humour

I agree with compatibility--if you define it as a trait or otherwise.
i see far too many people excuse their lack of tack or opinions as "honesty" so it all depends on how the two relate to the trait in question.
Perhaps, if we are compatible of how view honesty than yes.
Kindness  may initially draw a prey to the preditor according to Dr. Phil (cough)
Loyalty is a good one........compassion ...... Yet you can get that from a dog or cat.
If someone is loyal or compassionate to you, i dont necessarilly think there will be a  reciprocated connection or have anything else in common as an actor with  a starstruck fan. (vice versa)
Even communication can come across as nagging....How do you define good communication? compassionate? any given trait?
Whatever trait is important to you.......the other person needs to be compatible enough to view it similiarly to you or understand your point of view.

Compatible definitions of desired traits and compatible interaction exchange seems to be  important to me, but everything is so subjective these days....
i do believe, regardless if perceived as a trait or not,......compatibility still reigns very up there in importance for me.  That is just my opinion and is not factual as i well know.

Of all the traits that are important to me, the top has to be spirituality. A need to provide service runs a damned close second, though.

Submissivness would be one of the top traits I look for.

I did contemplate whether to even put forth "compatibility' because of what you've pointed out.  The definition for compatible is "capable of existing or performing in harmonious, agreeable, or congenial combination with another or others".

A trait?

Technically, no.  However, an ability (i.e. communication skill) isn't a trait either... and neither is intelligence or the possession of knowledge.  As others were broadening the scope of initial question, I, too, took the liberty of answering in what I felt was the spirit of the question.

MissTITTYMilk gave a very good explanation as to why, in my estimation, compatibility supercedes any individual traits.  While I might expound upon it at some length, it would be "beating a dead ponyslave".

Let's cheat here and say honest communication, communication of feelings, ideas is important in the relationship, but if they aren't truthful, doesn't really matter how much ya'll communicate, does it?

Is compatibility a trait?

Honesty is the most important to me.
The art of communicating can be learned rather easily.  Without honesty, one could communicate anything.
