What are your thoughts on raising the minimum wage?

Raising the minimum wage does not help the poor, it hurts
the poor.  Low income wage earners ought to be helped by
receiving government subsidies, and certain services for
free like $100/month free electric, free phone service, free
cable, free medical care, free high quality job training,  and
jobs that accomadate people who can't works everyday.

Talk about bullshit...... lmao

what is minimum wage now?

Largely less than what it should be.

LotusSong -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 5:35:29 PM)

I say to those that think it's just ducky where it's at.. to try to live on it and support  a family and houseing.. and get back to us on it.

servitude69 -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 5:46:10 PM)

To all of those who want to raise it, fine. What should it be raised to? $12. $16. why not make it $20. When the companys are forced to pay a certain amount and start going out of business because they can't pay it, who wins. Those who were making $8 are now out of a job.

Enough to live on.

Enough to make rent...and a few other things.

(That'll suit me just fine).

servitude69 -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 5:57:05 PM)

Enough to live on? How much is that? What would you put it at? Should Burger King be forced to pay $18.00 an hour. We do not live in Communist China.

Level -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:01:14 PM)

China is moving away from communism, into a semi-capitalistic dictatorship.

LotusSong -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:08:20 PM)

There is always a cost of living.. it's usually about 3%.. they haven'traised it in how long now?

servitude69 -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:08:42 PM)

The people now ruling China dictate what everyone makes and what everyone does in that Country. I don't know about everyone else, but I want to make my own dicisions. I don't want the Govt. making them for me. That includes having them tell employers how much they have to pay their employees.

So is America

Archer -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:12:01 PM)

Again what happens with the guy making $12 now when you raise the minimum to $12, yopu think he or she is going to not ask for that raise to get the same proportinate wage difference?

Arpig -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:13:08 PM)

DO IT!!!!

badkat -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:17:07 PM)

I think if a few of our illustrious members of govt were forced to live on minimum wage with no benefits for lets say 6 months or so it would go up like a rocket.  Even if they were forced to live on 10 bucks an hour they would still be hurting bad.

Been there done that paid for school on my own no financial aid worked full time (starting at minimum) and part time paid child support.

Didn't stay at minimum past the 90 day probationary they required, after that got raises every period they offered them. Left that job got a better one, continued to work two jobs and go to school.

Sure it was a pain in the ass left me no time for college parties, worked me through every spring break, winter break, and all summer long. But I finished school without any student loans, so paying them back was not a financial burden.

But as I said before minimum wage is not intended as a living wage for a family It's what employers pay for the unskilled workers, get a skill and minimum wage ends up not applying anymore. McDonanlds Fry Cooks make almost twice minimum, to start now.

Do what?

servitude69 -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:32:37 PM)

For those that just say "raise it", please answer just one question for me. Who pays for it?

Archer -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:36:59 PM)

Well lets see a big mac costs about 3/4 of minimum wage so are you ready to pay $8 for a Big Mac? Proportions of wages and prices will generally seek an equilibrium regardless of if you adjust from the top down or the bottom up.

If you raise minimum wage the prices will rise, if you raise prices people will demad a higher wage, the equilibrium works slowly if you go from price to demanded wage, and quickly if you go from raiseing the wage to the rise in prices.

But the value of the work is a perception thing and that value will not change much without social change first.

A minimum wage worker makes X an Electrical engineer makes 6X and reguardless of what you raise X to that proportion will not ch=ange unless the value of Electrical Engineers changes in the labor market.

nefertari -> RE: Minimum Wage (8/27/2006 6:37:11 PM)

Several people keep stating that fast food restaurant employees are making twice minimum wage, etc.  I'd like to know where.  I work for an accounting firm and the majority of our clients are McDonald's operators nationwide.  I see their payroll reports.  I don't see anyone making what you all are stating.  In fact, restaurant managers are making around $1000 every two weeks.  That's about $12.50/hour.
