In transactional annalysis terms a 'game' is exactly what those are most of the time. They are 'handshake' formalitys. Just a thing said to touch base, acknowledge the other person but keep a distance. Not ment, but no malace behind it. Nothing more than "I acknowledge that you exist, but you are not close to me and I have no wish to get closer. Thanks in return for acknowledging me".... hence, most of the time, whilst such 'pleasentrys' are worthles, we feel slighted if they are not returned, we percieve the other person as inpolite for not returning the 'handshake'

VERY good point. When i want to make sure it is more then a pleasnatry i try to look "into the persons soul", uniquely touch.

i live in a town of 5000. failing to say "hi" can trigger a grudge for YEARS here. and 12 yrs later someone will remember.

my siblings say all the time "let me call you right back" i used to wait. now i dont. yet - if i say that to a local person, and dont, i had bettter have a good reason.

Have a good day --- I mean have a good day. Have you ever met someone who planned on having a bad day?
Good Morning -- I mean good morning. If I am not having a good morning, I will just say Morning.
See You later --- I mean I will see you later
Etc., Etc., Etc.

I'm one of those people that says what they mean/feel.

I have been known to use this one most frequently.....it just means stop questioning me mostly...I don't want to get into it now.....but it drives everyone in my life nuts...its the simple.....

Living in the South has shown me just how catty people can be. I used to think Southern Belles were sweet, kind and gentle womenfolk. HA! My favorite thing to hear here is something like this:
