WyrdRich -> God and Guns (8/28/2006 3:50:20 PM)

I've heard a few reports that the freshly released Fox news crew abducted in Gaza a couple weeks ago were forced to convert to Islam before being released.  (Maybe someone could put up a link?)

I'm just curious how people feel about that.  For some, I imagine it would be easy to mouth the words but for those who are strongly attached to their personal beliefs it might be more of a struggle.  What would you do?

KenDckey -> RE: God and Guns (8/28/2006 4:02:17 PM)

After having been a prisiooner of a foreign government's Army (7 times - but that is another and very funny political story). I believe that I might.  But youhave to remember that the Koran has the same roots as The Bible of Jews and Christians (it even mentions Jesus).

Here you go, Rich:

I would say anything to get released....but thats just me.

Thanks, Level.

I'd swear fealty to any God, not only to get out but also for shits and giggles.

Besides, no matter how hardcore religious you are, do you really think your God would condemn you for choosing to return to your family and convert, temporarily, rather than die proud, depriving family and friends of your presence?

Pride is, after all, one of the 7 deadly sins.

Yours,

benji

You're welcome, Rich. The article doesn't dwell on the conversion, so I wonder if it happened? Bad scene, irregardless.

It seems these guys got some professional courtesy.  Instead of the whole "how do you feel?" assault, they declined to comment and were allowed to leave.

Forced to convert at gunpoint shows up everywhere I've seen or heard.

JustaDom -> RE: God and Guns (8/28/2006 4:35:05 PM)

I'd convert -- then celebrate my release with having my picture taken, drinking booze, eating pork chops and having meaningless sex with unmarried women of dubious moral character.  A bit down the road, I'd teach a young woman who wears midriff bearing shirts and Daisy Duke shorts to drive and the importance of voting.  That would just about balance the books in my opinion.

This isn't unexpected with religious extremists and has been going on with Christians and Islamic fundamentalists for about the last 2000 years.  I don't recall off the top of my head anything about Jewish extremists forcing people to convert except in the case of marriage but there probably have been situations like that.

I don't see Buddhists doing this sort of thing, though.

I'd do what I had to survive just like the people the new world missionaries and Constantine's cursaders did when they forced the natives to convert to christianity.  Payback's a bitch..isn't it?

ScooterTrash -> RE: God and Guns (8/28/2006 5:08:24 PM)

Rich..I imagine the desire to survive would be more important than what was being acted out at the time. I could see saying whatever needed to be said to get out of the situation. Of course, given the opportunity, it would be a much more interesting second visit (weg).

sleazybutterfly -> RE: God and Guns (8/28/2006 5:13:28 PM)

I can't say with any honesty what I would do.  I remember a story that was told in my church when I was younger.  It was about this in a way.  There were these armed men that came into a church, they asked people to denounce their God, or they would be killed.  Then it turned out that the ones that denouced were actually lined up against a wall and killed.  This story always comes to mind when I hear something like this.

I cannot in any form, say I would, or would not.  Freedom of course would be wanted....but at the cost of denoucing everything you believe in.. I am not sure.

Yep.  I never said people weren't stubborn, or idiots, or whatever you choose to call it.

Gotta love fear based propaganda!

"Hey kids, if you're threatened at gunpoint, don't give in to the evil.  The religion is more important than your petty lives.  Hooray for dying for a cause which will gladly let you die for it!"

Yours,

benji

Edited to add:  I think I might actually rather die than devote my entire life to a group which would encourage people to be more loyal to it than to themselves and their families.

Rule -> RE: God and Guns (8/28/2006 5:23:21 PM)

There are in fact two different perceptions.

1. The non-muslims: They were forced. We have a reason to go to war.

2. The muslims: It is like smoking the peace pipe. Now that they are muslims we have peace and are friends.

I'm pretty sure I'd choke on that bowl.

I was once in the awkward position of hearing a round go into the chamber of a gun pointed at my head.  It made me very angry.  I'm not sure what I might have done in this situation.
