It just amazes me that anyone would think putting government in charge
of the military is a good idea, especially when the evidence to the contrary
is so prevelant.

As a military member, the government is the ONLY entity that could run the military. No one interested in profit would risk losing thousands of dollars worth of equipment to go on the offensive.

BTW did you hear about the new Al Queda tape? Americans were warned to "convert to Islam or face the consequences". If we don't tie these bastards up in iraq and Afghanistan, they'll be knocking on your door next!

I agree with you IH, and would even offer to go one step farther, not only should the government remain in control of the military, I personally feel that the US should have a mandatory term of military service. The only choice that should be given would be branch of service and type training recieved. Just like many of the EU nations as well as the Middle East nations.
But then this is coming from a 28 year vet.  So I will bet that I get flamed on this big time.

You know, that actually proves my point. I have had numerous dealings with the military beauracracy in the past. I used to play music for the military in Hawaii, Japan and Korea. It left me in amazement that our military could get anything done, let alone fight a war. As I said in another post, that just proves how great our soldiers are. I would never want a health care system that had so much unaccountability and passing the buck as I had to deal with when I played for the military. That would be enough to make you ill.
But I can't see how a private company concerned with profit could wield a better army. The bottom line in the military is to win, not make money.

I assume you are being ironic here but it is a good point. I once read in a US paper when I was in california once that the US military is very bureaucratic and that a career soldier can get to be a general without leaving his office.

I assumed it was a slight exaggeration but essentially correct.

Here I am again. That sums up Eisenhower's career Cleaver but he didn't do too bad when he got the top job in WW2 European theatre  did he?

Ja, let me see if I have this right, we are hiring you to kill or be killed, you can go to jail for not shining your shoes.  You may not publicly disagree with any stated policy of us.  You are guarenteed that you will serve for this lenght of contract, and if we decide to alter the contract, at our convienience we are free to do so, you may not.

This spoken by a 23 year old hr professional that has a college degree and therefore knows everything it takes to do the job, and has a clear understanding of all nuances.

Well, cunt, I killed somebody in Vietnam.........
I am sorry sir, but this is a geo-political fight against terrorism and has nothing to do with that, in fact, it is killing people in the middle east, totally different thing.

Have you ever operated a M16.  Never actually had to fire one, I used a M15 with the sharp fire suppressor that in a pinch works pretty good as a bayonet, I never understood why they put the ring on the suppressor other than somebody might get an owie.

Oh, see that is a totally different thing.

Have you ever fired a 9mm so and so (whatever the sidearm is for the US Army et al.........)

Nope, I fired a M1911a1 or 2 that was a pumpkin slinger (because I was a sergeant) and it really don't matter if I hit anyone with it or that because the ad hoc fire plan is to lay out as much metal in the air as humanly possible  in shock and awe of the other side, hopefully taking a few down, and if that is not possible, to send them to defend somewhere where we aren't.

Jesus, the military is privatized enough.  Some thousands of food rations billed and never delivered by Haliburton, they paid a fine, the guys went hungry.

Wise up.

Ron

I think we should just have one big mercinary military.  The more you pay them..the more loyal and motivated they become.. I'm sure we can always outbid the competition. It's capitalistic, it's vigilanti,  it's AMERICA!

This is also a PSA.. I now return you to your original propaganda.

Lotus, you bring up a very interesting point. I am simply shocked that no one has privately offered a bounty for some of these guys, and if there is a private bounty that I'm not aware of, then I'm shocked no one has collected. If a college student can find the Afghani Big Cheese then I'm sure someone who's motivated by greed could sniff him out.

I'm all in favor of mandatory national service.  I'd like to see a strictly non-military option though.  An updated version of the Civilian Conservation Corps that does all sorts of hard, dangerous work in awful conditions for far less pay and worse treatment than those who choose a Combat arm.  I wonder how many protester types would put the money where the mouth is.

Privatize?  Interesting idea.  What corporation should the government grant a license to kill?

Actually, at this point in my life, I think it would be a better idea to militarize the Goverment.

With the exception of that syphillitic irishman, we have never gone to war with a military man in the whitehouse (our draft doging CIC doesn't count...)

Now, I didn't serve in Vietnam, but during my own enlistment in the military, I saw ALOT of people crack under the strain, and have had the pleasure of watching one of my shipmates repeatedly bash his head into a pole until he was unconscious because of hazing, viewed one standoff on a pier with a knife wielding wife-beater threatening to slice his own throat, and been present in a nearby area with one individual who blew his brains out with either an AR-15, or a Mossberg 12-Gauge (can't remember the exact weapon) while on watch, because of marital difficulties. (I know that there are some assholes out there that take that sort of thing to be some kind of Darwin filtration system.)

I understand that I haven't been through anything as hellish as Vietnam, and I don't have that "hard as nails" uber-masculine, survival of the fittest attitude towards things that a "seasoned" veteran might possess.  To me, common sense would dictate, that the dynamic of American culture and values is vastly different from that of other countries;  America is a fucked-up place, and if military service were an obligation, I have a feeling that the isolated cases that I've seen wouldn't be so isolated anymore.  Leave the fighting to those who think that the fighting is worthwhile.  If there aren't enough individuals with the desire to try to defend something, it probably isn't worth it in the first place.

It's not a terrible idea, but while that idea might have worked in the old days, that shit would NOT fly in 2006.

(While my hoody in the profile pic says ARMY, I was actually in the Navy)

My two cents, I earned the right, like many fellow comrades in arms  to bitch, moan, and groan about what is wrong. Back when the new volunteer service was created,  I was one of the first to join as a triple volunteer, for both airborne then onto becoming a Ranger and then onto becoming a  Special Forces soldier.I am willing to sacrifice to make the changes  for the better . If your not willing to stand up when it gets tough, then you do not deserve the right to enjoy the fruits of everyone elses labor when times are a plenty.  To live a life without honor is not a life worth living.  DUTY HONOR COUNTRY!!!  DE OPRESSO LIBER

Why don't we go all out and privatize all three branches of the government while we're at it?

Seems like we're already well on our way...

I disagree with military should be forced and not an option. I don't want people who're being forced there doing a half ass job, and yes people will do a half ass job if they could care less and are only being forced into it.

Let me fill you in on something, feline. Take this from a guy who served for eight years, even the guys who volunteer will do a half-assed job. I think mandatory enlistment is a good thing.

Uhm, I assume the "they" you are speaking of were the sort that flew airplanes into the twin towers?  "They" came from the country NEXT DOOR to Iraq, we were pretty close but a few hundred miles off.  Close enough for government work though eh?

As for the 1911, that was the year it was adopted, then in 1923, they added an arched mainspring housing, narrower hammer, wider front sight, shorter trigger, and modified the frame.  It was then called the 1911a1 and hasn't changed since.

As for the POS AR15M16, it was and always will be a hunk of crap.  The gas system was stupid when the Swedes adopted it and it hasn't gotten any better.  Stoner NEVER used it again either.  The cartridge is a POS too.  It is taking multiple hits to bring down full sized Arabs as opposed to 98 pound underfed Asians.

Oh and the 9mm Beretta is a POS too, cracks frames just like the gun they stole the locking system from the P38.  Too bad we didn't adopt the Browning HP, it works, period.  You can always tell the old pros from the kids.  The kids have all sorts of wizbang pistols, the pros have a simple holster with a well worn Browning.
