MizSuz -> Inundated with Yahoo Group Invitations (1/6/2005 6:03:51 PM)

Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing a sudden rise in Yahoo Group Invitations related to bdsm topics? In the last two days I've received three different invitations by people I have never heard of. When I inquire how they heard of me or why they decided to invite me I've been met with 1. A link to another message board with no information about the yahoo group on it; 2. No response at all; and 3. An abusive response from the invitee (quite vulgar, actually).

The reason I ask is because there is a nut on yahoo who regularly tries to fuck with me (the nut from the midwest that I've previously mentioned). Am I the only person experiencing this phenomenon?

ShadeDiva -> RE: Inundated with Yahoo Group Invitations (1/6/2005 8:05:23 PM)

I dunno ... I'm a member of like something around 120 Yahoo groups (I terminated a bunch recently) so I get periods of time where I get a tons of invites.

I'll usually pop on to see what it's like, if it has any merit or possinle merit for me, I'll stay - if I dislike the tone or somethng else about it, I'll bail.

I've been experiencing a flurry of invites again, but I can never tell if that's because I'm on so many or because of something else. LOL!

If I were the only one in the world with you. Then yes, you are the only one. I've gotten masses of them over different time spans, but nothing recently.
Your e-mail address must have somehow gotten into the hands of a spammer recently.

hahahaha Diva, you're right - this isn't helpful! hahahaha

But thank you for letting me know. Whenever I get a lot of things from yahoo in a rapid fire series I am leary. As I said, I have a 'fan.'

Thanks Gloria,

That's helpful information! You may be right regarding spammers. I purchased a thing or two recently and that may have done it.

They're all D/s related though. Most of them seem to have waning post counts in recent months or are completely new. Curiously, the ones with the waning post counts are the ones that are especially rude. Imagine that, huh?

What about spyware?

Ya know that's a good thought, and it's been a few weeks since I ran my Adaware. Maybe I'll set it to run while I'm in bed tonight.

Good thinking, thanks!

I think you've found the one form of spam I haven't been inundated with lately.

Yay! [:D]

My toolbox is vast, but since most things have been looking like nails lately, the hammer has gotten the most use [;)]

ProScatman -> RE: Inundated with Yahoo Group Invitations (1/6/2005 9:32:01 PM)

I can answer that one: I was on Yahoo, and did a search, and a whole page of collorme links came up! I couldn't believe my eyes, as I thought this site was kind of one you were invited to join. I did another search, for a person's screen name who is a Dom, and again, a page full of links to collorme! I believe someone should check this out!

You mean there are other tools?

ProScatman -> RE: Inundated with Yahoo Group Invitations (1/6/2005 9:51:33 PM)

I think, after reading everyones post so far here on this Yahoo subject, someone there must have hard feelings for some here at collorme, or the whole site in general. I appoligise for answering so fast when I saw this in my e-mail, but those yahoo searches jumped out at me as soon as I read MizSuz's post. I hope someone can do something about this somehow, before more members get spamed. Isn't there anyone at collorme that can officially complain to yahoo?

While it's hard to beat the usefulness of the venerable hammer, there are indeed many other fine tools. Pliers are particularly nice...

I have had trouble with yahoo groups since this summer with invites to groups that turn out to be very negative and seem to be only created to upset people that join. They claim to be BDSM or kink in nature but seem to be created by people that can’t wait to tell you how wrong you are about everything then attack you personally. In some they post off topic things about religion or politics to bait people and these groups were moderated also. I believe this is why the response you get is so nasty if you ask the person that sent the invite…they really want to get people mad.
If you join just one of these “phony” groups they invite you too all the other ones they have.
If you join one of these type of groups and even if you quit they send you a bunch invitations to other groups run by the same people. I used to really like Yahoo groups but now I am very cautious about joining any now some of them are just no fun. Not all of them are bad but I wouldn’t join any if you didn’t know the person that had invited you.

Okay check it out - this site appears on google, yahoo, and other search engines because spiders crawl over it and list it.

It is not a security breach. The passwords are merely to moderate the site if someone turns out to need to be curbed - not to hide the info on the site away from the public. This is at least my understanding from another time where this chick was screaming on and on about it, and also from my understanding of how the net works.

This is a free site. Thus cuz there is no info you need to PAY to get there is no reason to make it ultra hidden.

Second, unless you have your email listed somewhere or your yahoo information - they can't GET it to spam you *with*. So you are safe from evil spammers. *smile*

Our emails aren't listed anywhere for them to grab and use.

So the concern is unnecessary, it's okay the way it is.

Hope that eases your mind a bit *smile*

That has been my experience as well. I'm a member of enough of them. I usually tend to eschew new ones as, believe it or not, I don't contribute a lot anyway.

That's why I ASKED the people who invited me whether they know me or not. I was curious to know how they got my email and associated it with BDSM, though. At the moment this board is my primary place of participation and I was wondering if we have a lurker who is trolling the boards for such a purpose.

If they'd told me that was where they got my name that would have been fine. It was the fact that they wouldnt was my deciding factor. The guy that was inordinately rude to my request was just a deterent unto himself. I mean, why invite someone if your response to an inquiry is going to be "this group is not for pussies" and "fuck you bitch, I'm going to rat your old ass out" and the like? WHY invite me to begin with?!?

Thanks for your post!

smile2cu -> RE: Inundated with Yahoo Group Invitations (1/7/2005 6:04:54 AM)

I get a lot of group invitations on Yahoo. But I've pretty much got it down to a system (Don't tell anyone [;)])
I use different Yahoo names for my groups, pretty much sorted by interest. If a particular name becomes too spammed, I just kill it, and move on. Kind of a small trail of dead Yahoo's.[:(]
The Yahoo associated with the real me (Sure there's a real me!) has no groups, and is used very discretely, mostly for email to close friends.

OK, its kind of sad what one has to do in today's world to protect oneself, but you might as well be practical and do what has to be done.
