NastyDaddy -> Researchers identify "male warrior effect" (9/9/2006 12:11:03 PM)

NORWICH, England (Reuters) -- Men may have developed a psychology that makes them particularly able to engage in wars, a scientist said on Friday.

New research has shown that men bond together and cooperate well in the face of adversity to protect their interests more than women...  http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/09/09/warrior.effect.reut/index.html

The research scientist stated that men "may have developed" an apparent gender based psychology that better suits them for warrior roles. With issues of creation vs. evolution, equality of the sexes, gender bending, etc... how does this research apply. Is developing over generations an example of evolution, or is developing over generations answers to prayers of safety... or is it something else totally different from many of the prevalent debates? I use the "developing over generations" term due to the fact that developed traits/characteristics tend to evolve over time as opposed to instantly appear.

I'd say it is an obvious result of evolution. The instinctual actions being tied to the physical biology.
A human female usually has just one baby at a time, from one mate. A male can impregnate multiple females. In order for a male to carry on his genes, he must compete for available fertile females. This involves being both physically and materially able to compete. The female preferring the best provider and protector.
The physical differences begat the mental differences and modes of behaviour.

At this point, we can and should begin to dismiss some of these modes of behaviour.

If it were not for men I dread to think what the level of our civilisation would be. Admittedly some men like a rumble now and then, with disastrous results, but by and large I think the male of the species can be quite pleased with itself.

Just think what we would not have if it were left to women.! No roads, buildings, cars, aeroplanes, ships, computors, telecomms.classical music, literature... the list is endless.

Sorry Ladies but thats the truth and you know it.

If it wasn't for men we'd still be living in caves. They might be nice and clean and pleasant caves but caves none the less.

....er.....species that reproduces sexually anyone? If it weren't for men (and women too) there would be no humans.
The last quote reminded me of an old adage.....if it wasn't for electricity we'd be watching television in the dark.........

Personally I am in favor of issueing a woman with every foxhole

... and of course it would be very tastefully decorated.  Will it at least have a hot plate and porta potty?

Actually with our "fox holes".. we wouldn't need YOUR foxholes :)

Its not the mechanics of reproduction that is at issue Philo its what transpires afterwards. If sexual pleasure were separated from reproduction the quality of the stock of the human species would rise enormously..

By and large men are the engine of all of the major improvements that have raised the quality of life for so many people. Why I wouldn't mind betting that it was a man that invented the tampon !
Women have their place of course, and we all know where that is.

NastyDaddy -> RE: Researchers identify "male warrior effect" (9/9/2006 3:36:52 PM)

Interesting replies and thank you all.... so far we have 6 male posters ready for war and 1 female poster wanting to decorate the fox hole and guard the porta potty.

philosophy, if men (and women too) are responsible for humans being here, why do so many maniacs believe a man named Adam and his ho' Eve had no belly buttons?

...the operative word there is 'maniac'.....

I do not claim Daddy that men are ready for war, its just that like almost anything else of any major significance, if it is to be done, then probably a man will do it.  Thassal

*sighs* and now you have an ole curmudgeonly psychologist suggesting that the actual publication not the CNN "report" is a much better read.

The title of the paper is GENDER DIFFERENCES IN COOPERATION; Intergroup Competition Fosters Intragroup Cooperation, Van Vugt, deCremer and Jansenn

The hypothesis is that ancestral history of frequent and violent intergroup conflict has shaped the social psychology and behaviour of men in general.

Below is a link for those that do not have access to a professional online library

*polishes specs and goes back to reading* kinda hope someone will actually read the paper and comment or criticise, after all it is science and thus corrigible.

*edited cause I am a dreadful typist

The reason for this.. if we go nuclear.. a foxhole isn't gonna save your ass.  So I want to be comfy as I embrace the big flashing light.

LOL...I like your way of thinking LotusSong

IslandHeat -> RE: Researchers identify "male warrior effect" (9/9/2006 5:18:21 PM)

I think the primary reason for this development is the need for self preservation against the more savage elements of our own civilization (or lack thereof). If we all decided to sit in a great big circle, and sing Kumbayah, SOMEBODY would take it as a sign of weakness and attempt to enslave us all (I know this wouldn't be universally regarded as a bad thing in this forum LOL)

MistressWolfen -> RE: Researchers identify "male warrior effect" (9/9/2006 5:35:03 PM)

What the paper suggests is that males are much more likely to sit in a big circle and cooperatively sing Kumbaya than women are, and yes, there is an evolutionary measure attached to this behaviour for self (primary group) preservation. So bang on correct IslandHeat *winks*

why bite your tongue? you can easily address the idiocy of that last statement. apparently that person is unaware that women are doctors, lawyers, architects, playwrights, songwriters, producers, directors, authors, scientists, physicists, builders, craftswomen, pilots or composers.

apparently he is stuck in a caveman mentality where women depended on men to kill the beasts and then drag women by the hair into the caves before falling asleep and letting women do all the work to salvage the species.

You can never say what might not have been. Females may have done many of those things as well. And females have participated in creating many of them over the centuries. Maybe they might have been able to contribute even more if things had been more equal to allow them. When the need is there, and nobody else there to do it, someone usually steps up. If you let them.
